WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Chicago-area man wanted for questioning in the suspicious deaths of his wife and mother has been arrested in North Dakota after allegedly trying to rob a church at gunpoint during Mass.
Antioch, Ill., Police Chief Craig Somerville says 54-year-old Billy Varner was arrested Saturday. He says no one was hurt in the robbery attempt, and parishioners chased the suspect when he fled the church.
Authorities arrested Varner without incident shortly after on a car theft warrant out of Illinois. He wasn’t immediately charged in the robbery attempt.
Illinois authorities have traveled to North Dakota to question Varner about the deaths of 61-year-old Peggy Henderson and 82-year-old Dorothy Varner. They were discovered dead Oct. 28 in an apartment they shared with Billy Varner. Police haven’t said how they died.
RAY, N.D. (AP) – The priest at a church in Ray that was targeted by a robber armed with a shotgun says God gave him the grace to handle the situation calmly, and that he was prepared to die.
The Rev. Benny Putharayil (poo-tuh-RY’-uhl) says the man walked into the Church of St. Michael during Saturday night mass and told the 35 parishioners to get on the floor. He then had Putharayil to fill a bag with money.
Three parishioners chased the man after he fled and gave a description to officers, who apprehended the suspect. The man is wanted for questioning in the suspicious deaths of his wife and mother in Illinois.
Putharayil says after the robbery the congregation talked for a bit, prayed for the robber – then held Mass as planned.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Thousands of North Dakotans who buy health insurance on their own will see their current policies canceled or changed beginning in January as new federal health care regulations take effect.
Health insurance companies already have sent out cancellation notices in North Dakota and other states, routing customers to new plans that comply with rules in the Affordable Care Act. Those rules make some previously optional coverage areas mandatory and set limits on out-of-pocket expenses. Plans that do not meet those new regulations will be cancelled or upgraded.
In North Dakota, the changes will wipe out virtually all the 2,500 individual insurance policies carried by Medica and Sanford Health. Blue Cross Blue Shield North Dakota has not disclosed how many of its customers’ plans will be discontinued.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota National Guard says it will issue military identification for same-sex couples.
Guard spokeswoman Billie Jo Lorius says the move was made because the North Dakota gets federal funding for Guard units.
Some Guard units in states that do not recognize gay marriage had been singled out by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in a speech before the Anti-Defamation League.
The Defense Department began issuing identity cards to the spouses in same-sex couples following a Supreme Court ruling this year that cleared the way for them to receive the same work-related benefits given to heterosexual couples.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Appointed Public Service Commissioner Julie Fedorchak is seeking a permanent seat in 2014.
Gov. Jack Dalrymple appointed Fedorchak to fill the post in 2012, after it had been vacated by Republican Kevin Cramer who was elected to the U.S. House.
Fedorchak is slated to start her campaign Monday in Bismarck and Fargo. No challengers have announced a bid for her seat.
DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – Lawyers say dozens of western North Dakota mineral owners have expressed interest in joining lawsuits seeking damages from oil drilling companies for natural gas that is lost when it is burned instead of being captured as a byproduct of oil production.
The lawsuits against 10 oil companies in the Bakken oilfields seek class-action status to represent other western North Dakota mineral rights owners. The lawsuits argue the mineral owners have lost millions of dollars in royalties because oil drilling companies burn off large amounts of gas instead of capturing and selling it.
Texas-based lawyer Britton Monts says landowners with wells operated by companies not already being sued are showing interest in joining the lawsuits.
Oil industry officials say they comply with state laws on flaring natural gas.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Officials say foreclosures in Minot have risen substantially since the 2011 flood in the North Dakota city.
The Ward County Sheriff’s Office reports eight foreclosure sales from its auctions in 2011. That has risen to 23 foreclosure sales this year as of the end of October, with more auctions pending.
Minot real estate agent Connie Lord says flood-damaged homes often don’t sell when auctioned at sheriff’s sales because the value typically isn’t enough to cover what’s left on the mortgage. The properties then wind up on the market with real estate firms.
Lord says lenders will sell houses at a discount to get them off their inventory, rather than risk not being able to sell later.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Game and Fish Department will continue a surveillance program for chronic wasting disease during the fall hunting seasons.
Officials will sample hunter-killed deer from 12 hunting units in the east and one in the southwest for both CWD and bovine tuberculosis. Moose and elk killed in the state also are eligible for testing.
CWD affects the nervous system of members of the deer family and is always fatal.
A list of drop-off sites for deer heads can be found at http://www.gf.nd.gov .
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A push to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages in the Fargodome during North Dakota State University football games has apparently fizzled.
A few NDSU senators had suggested the possibility of regulating alcohol sales during games, arguing that could reduce binge-drinking before games.
The idea seems to lack support from university officials, and even the students who brought up the issue are reconsidering its merit.
The current five-year contract between the university and the Fargodome Authority does not allow alcohol sales inside the facility during school events. And Athletic Director Gene Taylor says the alcohol policy for NDSU events inside the Fargodome is not going to change any time soon.
Robbie Lauf, student body president, says the student government supports the current policy.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A company accused of negligence for a 2012 fire in the Ralph Engelstad Arena says the lawsuit should be thrown out of federal court.
The complaint filed by Arena Holdings Charitable and RE Arena, Inc., seeks $5 million from Harman Professional, Inc., and Harman International Industries.
Arena officials say the fire originated in a speaker after it became “improperly energized” by a direct electrical current from the amplifier. The fire caused smoke damage and damage to electronics and ice.
The defendants say in a motion filed Friday that an economic loss doctrine does not allow the arena to recover damages.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio will be in charge of the Denver Broncos while head coach John Fox recovers from heart surgery.
Del Rio went 68-71 from 2003-11 as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars before joining Fox’s staff last season.
Del Rio will still serve as Denver’s defensive coordinator.
The Broncos are ranked 24th in defense this season, but they were missing star linebacker Von Miller and cornerback Champ Bailey for much of the first half of the season.
Fox needs aortic valve replacement surgery and will miss several weeks. He was taken to a hospital near his Charlotte, N.C., home Saturday when he began feeling dizzy while playing golf during the Broncos’ bye week.
The Broncos (7-1) play at San Diego on Sunday.
