MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A worker pulling an old utility pole from the ground southwest of Minot was killed when it hit him in the head.
The Ward County Sheriff’s Department says 24-year-old Lee Edward Helmers, of Bismarck, died at the scene of Monday’s accident near the intersection of Highways 23 and 28.
The department says he and another worker were using a truck crane when a pole became too heavy for the machine to handle.
It was also windy at the time, so the pole slipped from the device, landed on the ground and the bottom part of the pole popped up and hit Helmers in the head.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota Student Senate has unsuccessfully tried to head off possible big tuition hikes by offering President Robert Kelley student funds for a construction project.
The Student Senate on Sunday voted to offer $2 million in student funds set aside for a building project to be used instead for a one-stop shop for student services at the Memorial Union.
Kelley declined, saying ultimate control over tuition is with the state Board of Higher Education.
Student Body President Nick Creamer says students don’t want the UND administration to seek board approval to raise tuition beyond a 3.72 percent cap.
Kelley says that given the Senate’s decision he will seek other funding options but doesn’t expect any of them to be ideal.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Insurance Department wants health insurance companies to disclose the number of people whose policies will be canceled under President Barack Obama’s health care law.
Individual health insurance policies are being canceled for millions of people nationwide who buy individual insurance policies as federal health care reform requires plans to cover certain benefits. Policies are being discontinued because they don’t meet the higher benefit requirements of the Affordable Care Act.
Deputy Insurance Commissioner Rebecca Ternes has requested the information from three companies selling coverage on the Healthcare.gov website. The companies are Blue Cross Blue Shield North Dakota, Sanford Health and Medica.
The state Insurance Department also wants the insurance companies to disclose the number of people who have signed up for the plans.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A second week of dry weather is helping North Dakota farmers catch up on the delayed late-season harvest.
The Agriculture Department says in its latest crop and weather report that the sunflower harvest is now about one-fourth done and the corn harvest about half complete. Both still lag behind the average pace, however.
The flaxseed, soybean and dry edible bean harvests also are behind average, but they are now at least 90 percent compete.
North Dakota ranchers have been busy weaning and selling calves, moving livestock to harvested corn fields to graze and hauling hay to winter feeding areas.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The City Council in Leith (leeth) has approved an ordinance that will require a white supremacist living in the southwestern North Dakota town to install running water and sewer service in his home.
City Attorney Thomas Kelsch says that sometime this week Craig Cobb will be given a notice to comply within 30 days.
Cobb says he’ll do it, but he won’t be deterred. He still wants to encourage others with similar views to move to Leith to help him establish an Aryan enclave.
Cobb says the town’s leaders are illegally targeting him, and he’s pursuing a civil rights complaint with the state. Kelsch says the council is looking out for the safety of all of the town’s residents and is on solid legal ground.
In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House is dodging questions about whether it will support legislation that would allow people to keep their current health care plan, as promised by President Barack Obama. Lawmakers from both parties are pushing measures to let individuals retain their existing coverage if they want to. Millions have been notified that their policies are being dropped as the new health care law takes effect.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The head of the Medicare program is telling Congress that the government’s health care website has improved since its launch a month ago, and that it’s continuing to get better. Marilyn Tavenner (TAV’-eh-nur) told a Senate panel Tuesday that the site can now process nearly 17,000 people every hour, “with almost no errors.”
DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) – No injuries are reported after a mortar round slammed into a building in Syria’s capital housing the Vatican’s embassy today. Other foreign diplomatic missions have been struck during the country’s nearly 3-year-old civil war. But it’s not clear if the Vatican mission was targeted during today’s shelling. Nobody claimed responsibility.
PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) – His brother says the decision of Richard Shoop to take his own life, after firing shots inside a New Jersey shopping mall, is a “tragedy.” Shoop’s body was found early Tuesday at the mall in Paramus (puh-RAM’-uhs). Authorities believe he didn’t intend to shoot anyone when he began firing at the ceiling and elsewhere in the mall last night. No one else was hurt, but the mall was locked down for hours, with shoppers and customers trapped inside.
TORONTO (AP) – There’s even more pressure now on Toronto Mayor Rob Ford to resign — after he admitted for the first time that he has smoked crack cocaine. Ford says he did so “probably a year ago” when he was in what he calls a “drunken stupor.” Ford has been battling allegations that he was seen on video smoking crack. He initially insisted the video didn’t exist, and sidestepped questions about whether he had, in fact, smoked crack. He now says the tape should be made public.
