BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota is in for a bit of a chill before the weather warms later in the week.
The National Weather Service says temperatures overnight into Tuesday morning are expected to range from the single digits above zero in the southwest to the single digits below zero in the northeast. And the wind could make it feel as cold as 20 below zero in north central and northeastern North Dakota.
A warm-up is in store, though. High temperatures statewide are forecast to be in the 30s and 40s on Tuesday and in the 40s and 50s on Wednesday.
Kathryn (CSi) — The Barnes County Sheriff’s Office reports a traffic and a farm accident that occurred over the weekend.
30 year old Karl Helland was injured operating a baler near Kathryn Saturday about 8:30-p.m.
His hand and part of his arm were pinned between two steel rollers.
He was extricated from the baler and taken to Mercy Hospital in Valley City for treatment of injuries.
Responding to the scene to assists the Sheriff’s Office, were Barnes County Rescue, Barnes County Ambulance, Kathryn First Responders, along with Litchville, and Hasting Fire Departments.
On Sunday morning about 7-O’Clock a 19-year-old Valley City man was injured when he lost control and rolled his Dodge Durango into a ditch northwest of Valley City.
He was cited for Care Required.
Carrington (CSi) Officials in Foster County announced that the county now has a reverse 911 system for county residents.
Reverse 911 system uses a database of telephone numbers and associated addresses that can be used to deliver recorded emergency notifications to a selected set of telephone service subscribers.
Foster County Emergency Manager, Teresa Risovi, says the service will be used in the event of an emergency.
The system is already being used for the Lake Juanita area in the event of severe weather, Carrington Public Works for water main breaks and the Carrington Fire Department uses revers 9-1-1 as a supplemental paging system.
The system was established by Global Connect, which was bought out by CodeRED, which is also operational in the area in Stutsman and Barnes Counties.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Officials at the University of Minnesota have lifted a warning for students to take shelter after man with a gun tried to rob a student on campus.
University police say the armed man tried to rob a student of her laptop in Anderson Hall on the West Bank of the Minneapolis campus Monday before fleeing into the tunnel system between buildings.
The Star Tribune reports police say the gun was not fired.
After the attempted robbery, the university sent a text alert at 3:20 p.m. Monday warning students on the West Bank to stay in a safe place. The alert was lifted about an hour later.
A university Tweet says police believe the suspect has left campus. All regular classes and activities will continue as planned.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – State wildlife officials say there is no way to know for sure whether a mountain lion that was shot and killed south of Bismarck is the same one that was spotted near an elementary school in the area.
A deer hunter killed the 85-pound female lion on Friday. Tom Doering says he had seen reports of a lion causing a scare for Prairie Rose Elementary School, and had it on his mind that he might encounter a big cat.
Game and Fish Department Enforcement Chief Bob Timian tells The Bismarck Tribune it seems likely the lion is the one spotted near the school, but that it’s impossible to say for certain.
Students at the school were kept indoors at times last week as a precaution.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The federal government has given the city of Minot approval to spend about $20 million in flood recovery grant money.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has approved the city’s plan for spending the money, which is part of a $35 million grant award announced earlier.
The city devastated by Souris River flooding in June 2011 is planning to use the money for property buyouts, road repairs and to help homeowners with repair expenses.
The state also has received permission to spend part of a $6.6 million federal grant. The state proposes to provide $3.2 million to a developer for housing for low- and moderate-income residents in Minot.
The 2011 flood damaged or destroyed more than 4,000 homes, businesses and other structures in North Dakota’ fourth-largest city.
In sports…
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The best curling teams from around the country are in North Dakota competing for a spot on the U.S. Olympic teams.
The first stones were thrown Sunday night at Scheels Arena in Fargo. The trials run through this coming weekend.
Five men’s teams and four women’s teams are competing. The top teams will go to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, in February.
It’s not the first time Fargo has hosted a top curling event. The USA Curling National Championships were held in Scheels Arena in February 2011.
In world and national news…
TACLOBAN, Philippines (AP) – The relief effort in the Philippines has barely begun. As many as 10,000 people — and perhaps more — are dead as a result of the typhoon that struck on Friday. Philippine soldiers have been distributing food and water in the city of Tacloban (tahk-LOH’-bahn), and teams from the United Nations and other international agencies have been seen there for the first time. Bodies of victims still haven’t been removed from the streets.
TACLOBAN, Philippines (AP) – Desperate survivors of the Philippine typhoon have stripped malls, shops and homes of food, water and consumer goods. Officials say looters have also taken non-essential items such as TVs, refrigerators, Christmas trees and a treadmill. Police and soldiers have been patrolling the downtown area of Tacloban (tahk-LOH’-bahn) to guard against further chaos.
HOUSTON (AP) – A sheriff had said that the shooting that left two teenagers dead at a house party in suburban Houston began with celebratory gunfire — but now, court documents indicate that wasn’t the case. Affidavits involving two suspects who were arrested Monday say individuals who were at the party told investigators that the two suspects began firing at them before shooting into the crowd. In addition to the two people killed, 19 others were hurt.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – An Ohio child killer scheduled for execution in two days has asked that his organs be donated to help his mother and sister. Lawyers for death row inmate Ronald Phillips say in a letter to the Ohio prisons agency that Phillips would also be willing to donate the organs to other individuals. The letter says Philips wants as many people as possible to benefit from his death. Phillips faces execution Thursday by a two-drug combination of a sedative and painkiller. It’s never been used before in an execution. He was sentenced to die for raping and killing his girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Sheriff’s officials say the animal that killed an employee this weekend at an Oregon animal sanctuary was a cougar, and an autopsy shows the woman died of multiple bite wounds. Renee Radziwon died Saturday night inside an enclosure at WildCat Haven in Sherwood. The sanctuary said in a statement Sunday that while protocol calls for more than one worker inside an enclosure containing an animal, Radziwon was apparently alone.
