(CSi) The Holiday Dazzle on Main Parade will be held Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 CSi TV 10 – THE REPLAY CHANNEL, will televise the parade, with announcers Chris Sheppard and Wayne Byers. Join us at 1st Ave & 2nd St S, Arts Park & Bank intersection.. Bleacher seating will be available. Bring blankets.

The parade will start at 7 p.m. and originate at the south end of McElroy Park and travel north to 8th St. S.E. and then west to First Avenue and going north to Third Street North.

Main Street Downtown President Nancy Miller said that last year there were over 40 entries in the parade which was watched by several thousand people.

Ambassador, Charlie Kourajian adds, that several new entries will be in the parade this year.

Parade entries will compete for trophies in four categories:

Best Dazzle,

Most Original Theme,

Most Outstanding Amateur Built,

Most Outstanding Civic or Non-profit.

A $100 cash award will be given to the trophy winners.

Floats will be judged for motion, lights, creativity, originality of theme, holiday spirit and music.

Judges will select the winners at 6:30 p.m. at the gathering area in McElroy Park and awarded at the after parade party at the Gladstone Inn with songs by the Jamestown Choralaires and refreshments and cookies courtesy of Shady’s and the Main Street Downtown Association, along with Hugo’s and Coborn’s.

First United Methodist Church of Jamestown is once again inviting all Holiday Dazzle
participants and viewers to enjoy free popcorn and hot cocoa in the lower dining
room before, during and after the parade on Friday, November 29. You’re invited to
come, warm up, and enjoy food and fellowship in this friendly atmosphere. The First
United Church is located just east of the Alfred Dickey Public Library.

On Wednesday evening over 50 individuals attended the Christmas tree lighting in fron ot theCivic Center.

On Thanksgiving Day, 615 people were served at this year’s community dinner at Concordia Lutheran Church in Jamestown just short of the record of 623 people.

 

 OAKES, N.D. (AP) — The longtime high school principal and activities director in Oakes has resigned nearly a week after an internal investigation began.

KDDR-AM reports Don Warren submitted his resignation Wednesday during a special school board meeting that lasted less than two minutes.

The board voted unanimously to accept the resignation, which was effective immediately, and thanked him for his service to the district.

Warren didn’t attend the meeting but told The Associated Press he had no comment.

Oakes superintendent Josh Johnson also declined to comment on the investigation. He says the inquiry started last week and should be concluded by the end of next week.

Warren had been high school principal at Oakes since 1990 and the school’s activities director since 2001.

 

Jamestown (CSi) — Two men were arrested in connection with an incident that occurred early Saturday (Nov 23, 2013) morning, where a homeowner reported blood on the window of a garage door, which was opened.

Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson says officers were dispatched by Barnes County Dispatch at 3:43 a.m. to 530 6th Ave. Northwest.

Subsequent to the investigation it was determined that an individual entered the garage and entered a vehicle inside.

The officers were able to track the unknown individual to a house at 546 6th Street Northwest, by following footprints in the snow.

The investigation included physical evidence at the scene, and talking with four Valley City men at the house, which led police to believe that an altercation had occurred between the men.

Further investigations at the house led to two arrests.

20 year old Ring Akol, was arrested for minor in possession, consumption of alcohol.

22 year old Shol Gout, was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Chief Thompson says as the investigation continues, anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Valley City Police at 701-845-3110.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The James River Family “Y” in Jamestown recently hosted over 150 wrestlers with the tournament in conjunction with the University of Jamestown.

On Wednesday’s (Nov 27, 2013) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, the “Y’s” Excutive Director, Frank Conlin said, teams in the tournament were from the Dakotas, Canada, and a team from Minnesota.

Conlin said with early Jamestown Public Schools dismissal on Wednesday December 4, 2013, the Y will host a “Float & Flick” at the Y’s pool, for Middle School students, with swimming and a movie. That evening the “Float & Flick.” will be for K-3 & 4 graders.

He pointed out the new “Battle Ropes,” program at the Y is successful with more ropes having been added, held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30-p.m., to 7:15-p.m.

Conlin said brochures are at the Y’s front desk to sign up for the Winter One sessions, that start after the first of the year.

He added the Y is closed on all of the upcoming holidays, and noted that the Y is open for indoor walking at 5-a.m.

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are searching for a man accused in an armed robbery at a south side convenience store.
 
     The incident happened at about 4 a.m. Thursday at a Stop-N-Go store on University Avenue and 27th Avenue South.
 
     Police say a masked man entered the store and threatened the clerk with a handgun. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
 
     A police dog was brought in to search for the man, but lost his track a short distance from the store.
 
     No injuries were reported.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – One of two men whose murder conspiracy conviction was overturned by the North Dakota Supreme Court is headed to trial again.
 
     A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Dec. 26 for Cody Borner, of Stanton.
 
     He pleaded not guilty this week to new charges of terrorizing, aggravated assault and five counts of reckless endangerment.
 
     Richard Whitman earlier pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
 
     A jury in June 2012 convicted them of conspiracy to commit murder in the January 2012 shooting death in Beulah of Mike Padilla, of Billings, Mont. Padilla’s brother, Timothy, was wounded in the shooting that authorities say resulted from a drug-fueled dispute.
 
     The Supreme Court overturned the convictions because of improper charging documents but said the men could be charged again.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man has been sentenced to seven years in prison on illegal weapons charges.
 
     James Siegrist, of Mandan, was charged in federal court with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon.
 
     A jury convicted Siegrist of the charges on Aug. 28.
 
     Authorities say Siegrist was handling a .45 caliber weapon in July 2012 when it discharged and struck a woman in the leg. He was arrested in March 2013 for possession of three handguns and 94 rounds of ammunition. Two of the handguns were concealed on his body and one was located inside his vehicle.
 
     Siegrist was prohibited from possessing either a firearm or ammunition by virtue of multiple felony convictions.

 

 RHAME, N.D. (AP) – Cellphone customers in far southwest North Dakota could have better cellphone coverage sometime next year.
 
     Rhame city auditor Margie Russ says  a communications company under contract by AT&T plans an environmental site assessment near the town’s water tower.
 
     She says a new cell tower there would greatly improve phone service in Rhame, which has little to no reception.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota couple is asking a livestock council to change the rules on regulating a certain breed of sheep.
 
   Autumn and Travis Bennett recently bought six painted desert sheep from Montana because they liked the colors and wanted animals with horns that didn’t need shearing.
 
     The Bennetts later discovered that North Dakota regulations do not allow the sheep to be turned out to pasture over fears they could escape captivity and interbreed or spread disease among the wild bighorn sheep population.
 
     The couple says it’s forcing them to pay more for feed and supplements.
 
     In other states, painted desert sheep are considered domestic animals rather than wildlife. The Bennetts say that should be the case in North Dakota as well.

 

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A housing study for a city in the North Dakota oil patch is recommending construction of more than 900 affordable housing units in the next decade.
 
     Minot city officials had asked for the study because of complaints by employers and employees about the lack of affordable housing.
 
     The  study proposes 300 new homes ranging from $155,000 to $200,000; 450 units of rental housing; and 180 units of housing for seniors and disabled residents.
 
     It also recommends the city form a Minot housing partnership to pursue affordable housing and create an employer-assisted work force housing program.
 
     The 124-page report will be presented to the Minot city council on Monday.

 

GARRISON, N.D. (AP) – Residents of Garrison are gearing up to go 200 years back in time.
 
     The city’s annual holiday Dickens Village Festival gets underway Friday and runs for three consecutive weekends.
 
     The event is inspired by Charles Dickens’ story “A Christmas Carol.” It started with a plan to stage a play in 1994 and evolved into the festival that turns the town of about 1,300 people into a Victorian English village from Dickens’ era.
 
     Garrison dubs itself the “official Christmas capital of North Dakota.” This is the 20th year for the holiday festival.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Two Fargo men who have spent the last decade documenting North Dakota ghost towns are seeing some of those communities coming back to life in the oil patch.
 
     Troy Larson and Terry Hinnenkamp recently completed the second edition of “Ghosts of North Dakota,” a coffee table book of photographs that depict the remains of pioneer towns throughout the state.
 
     Larson says he was shocked to find that some of the towns featured in the first book now have people living in them because of the oil boom.
 
     One of the images the pair had hoped to capture for the second volume was an abandoned church in Fortuna. But a recreational vehicle and semi-trailer parked in front of the building ruled out the photo shoot.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – One North Dakota deer hunting season has closed, but another is opening.
 
     North Dakota’s deer gun season closed on Sunday, but the muzzleloader hunting season runs from noon Friday Central time through Dec. 15.
 
     Hunters with a lottery muzzleloader license can hunt white-tailed deer statewide.

 DETROIT (AP) – Matthew Stafford threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns as the Detroit Lions thumped the Green Bay Packers 40-10. Reggie Bush finished with 117 yards rushing and 65 yards receiving to help the Lions improve to 7-5 and drop the Packers to 5-6-1. The Lions had dropped their previous nine Thanksgiving Day games before beating the Packers for the first time in six tries.

 DALLAS (AP) – DeMarco Murray ran for three touchdowns and the Dallas Cowboys moved two games over .500 for the first time this season by turning a 21-7 deficit into a 31-24 win over Oakland.
 
   BALTIMORE (AP) – Justin Tucker hit five field goals, Joe Flacco threw for 251 yards and the Baltimore Ravens improved to 6-6 by outlasting Pittsburgh 22-20.

 NEW YORK (AP) – The NBA has fined Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd $50,00 for intentionally spilling his drink on the court as an unusual stall tactic. Kidd bumped into Brooklyn reserve Tyshawn Taylor with 8.3 seconds left in Wednesday’s loss to the Lakers, causing his drink to spill. A video of the fumble showed Kidd appearing to tell Taylor to “hit me” as the guard walked toward the bench, creating a delay that allowed the Nets to diagram a play after they had run out of timeouts.

 ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Denver coach John Fox is returning to work on Monday, less than a month after undergoing open-heart surgery. He has plans to coach the Broncos in their game against the Tennessee Titans on Dec. 8. What hasn’t been determined is whether Fox will coach from the sideline or the booth.

 

In world and national news…

UNDATED (AP) – Black Friday is on, and despite a Thanksgiving day start by some retailers, there are early reports of long checkout lines at some retailers. At least a dozen national retail chains from Macy’s to Gap to Target tried to get a jump on the season by opening yesterday. Target says toys and electronics are popular. Black Friday, is typically the biggest shopping day of the year, but Thanksgiving openings last year took a bite out of sales.
 
     AKRON, Ohio (AP) – A relative says an Ohio Amish girl is back in the U.S. but remains in hiding with her parents in a dispute with authorities over forced chemotherapy for her leukemia. The relative tells the Akron Beacon Journal the girl is doing well with natural treatments. Doctors fought the family’s decision to end chemotherapy and the family fled the country for a time.
 
     CAIRO (AP) – Hundreds of Islamist demonstrators are taking to the streets after Friday prayers in in protest of a new Egyptian law against unauthorized gatherings. Friday prayers are traditionally used by Islamists to mobilize their largest numbers. The demonstrations appear to be a test for authorities who adopted the contentious bill partially to stop near-daily gatherings by supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi.
 
     FREMONT, Ohio (AP) – Authorities in northwest Ohio says a car that hit a minivan, killing two people, was traveling between 125 and 150 mph as it was being chased by state troopers. The minivan burst into flames. The 24-year-old driver of the speeding vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
 
     ISLAMABAD (AP) – Intelligence officials say a suspected U.S. drone strike killed an alleged militant in Pakistan’s northwest tribal region. It’s seen as the latest indication Washington has no intention of throttling back its unmanned aircraft attacks despite increasing tension with Pakistan over the strikes.
