Creighton University economist Ernie Goss says the region’s heavy manufacturers reported solid increases in new export orders in November. The region’s employment gauge also jumped to 51.2 in November, from 48.2 the previous month. Goss attributes the October downturn to the federal government’s partial shutdown.

In sports..

BISMARCK (AP) — The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is cautioning hunters to be wary of where they hunt as freeze-up begins.

Officials said North Dakota’s small and mid-size waters are starting to freeze, giving the appearance of safe foot travel. But boat and water safety coordinator Nancy Boldt said ice thickness is not yet consistent. She says hunters should be cautious of walking on frozen stock ponds, sloughs, creeks and rivers.

Boldt also cautions hunters to be aware of snow-covered ice. She said snow insulates ice, inhibiting solid ice formation, and makes it difficult to check thickness. Snow also hides cracked, weak and open water areas.

Winter anglers also are being encouraged to consider early ice conditions before traveling onto and across North Dakota lakes.

With seconds remaining in the gamd, a confusing moment in which Washington apparently thought it had a first down – the sideline down marker was at “1” – when it was actually third-and-1.

Washington coach Mike  Shanahan vented at officials over the miscue, which referee Jeff Triplette said was caused when the chains were incorrectly moved, but the Redskins technically converted the fourth-and-1 anyway because Garcon had enough yardage for the first down before he was stripped of the ball.
