GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Monday morning the state Transportation Department was warning motorists about challenging winter driving conditions in eastern North Dakota.
Officials have issued a travel alert for the region due to slippery snow-covered roadways and blowing snow reducing visibility. Cities in the alert area include Grand Forks, Fargo and Wahpeton.
The department says conditions are such that motorists can still travel, but they should slow down and use caution.
Jamestown (CSi) — The Jamestown City Engineer’s Office informs the public that city crews will begin snow removal in the DOWNTOWN area beginning approximately at 11:00 p.m. tonight – Monday, December 16, 2013, and continue during the night.
Downtown merchants and all public/private schools are asked to have their sidewalks shoveled by 9 p.m. tonight, Monday, December 16, 2013.
Please push snow directly into the street — DONOT create piles of snow.
The above schedule is contingent upon changing weather conditions and snow accumulation totals.
Jamestown (CSi) – Jamestown Police is looking for information concerning a robbery of the 10th Street Southeast Cenex store and gas station Sunday evening.
Police say that 7:40 p.m., a male suspect wearing a plaid scarf and dark-colored face mask robbed the store.
The man demanded money and fled on foot with an undetermined amount of cash.
Police say there was no weapon and no one was hurt.
The man is described as five feet nine or ten inches tall and weighing around 200 pounds. He was also wearing a denim jacket and gloves.
Anyone with information is asked to call Jamestown Police Department at 701-252-1000.
Jamestown (CSi) The James River Humane Society reports that the fundraiser the “Elvis Christmas” display held recently in Jamestown was successful in the community supporting the shelter.
On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, JRHS President, Matt Opsahl said the free will donation admission raised $235 along with donations of cat and dog food, pet toys and kitty litter.
Jack and Betty Gorman of Jamestown hosted the display, Betty said as a way to give back to the shelter after the Gorman’s recently adopted a pet there.
Opsahl reminded pet owners to make sure their animals are safe from the dangerously cold temperatures. Keep them inside as much as possible, to avoid their paw pads from freezing. He said there are de-icers available that are pet safe.
He said to make sure any outdoor animal shelters are well insulated and away from the wind, and keep pets inside vehicle while traveling.
He pointed out that the James River Humane Society currently has 23 cats and 13 dogs available for adoption.
The shelter is always in need of volunteer, and supplies such as bleach, laundry detergent, Lysol and pine-sol.
The shelter is open daily from 9-a.m. to noon and 5:30p.m., to 6:30-p.m., located off the I-94 Bloom Exit.

Jamestown (CSi) Officials with Dakota Spirit AgEnergy say construction is planned to start on 65-million gallon per year, renewable fuels plant, in January 2014.
The plant will be located at the Spiritwood Energy Park, with the plant owned by Great River Energy (GRE).
The plant will purchase about 23 million bushels of corn, producing ethanol, and fuel-grade corn oil used to make biodiesel and distillers grain for livestock feed.
The $155 million plant is expected to employ about 275 during construction and 36 people when it goes on line.
Since groundbreaking in August, officials have been working on fundraising and the final design of the project and the contracting work necessary for a large project.
GRE Vice President of Business Development and strategy, Greg Ridderbusch, says
contracts have been signed with Karges-Faulconbridge Incorportated as project engineer, and McGough Construction as general contractor.
Ridderbusch says the plant would not have become a reality without the assistance of leaders in Jamestown and the community, including the Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation, and community farmers.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man is facing several charges after a carjacking in Minot. The incident happened Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of a Minot business. Police say 25-year-old Glen Reiner of Mandan stole a vehicle after brandishing a weapon to force the occupants to exit the vehicle.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Williston man has been charged in a hit-and-run that killed a Mississippi man in early December.
28-year-old David Krause was charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.
Krause is accused of driving a vehicle that killed 31-year-old Anthony Paul Scoggins on Dec. 5.
Authorities say a pickup truck ran over Scoggins as he tried to hold onto the back of the truck in the JDub’s Bar and Grill parking lot.
Police say Krause was tracked down through assistance of two witnesses and security video.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Police in Fargo have joined an investigation into whether a local TV journalist broke the law while reporting a hidden-camera story aimed at revealing holes in elementary school security.
Valley News Live reporter Mellaney Moore last week walked around schools in Fargo and West Fargo in North Dakota and in neighboring Moorhead, Minn., without permission. In all three cities, entering schools without checking in with administrators can result in a misdemeanor charge.
Police in West Fargo and Moorhead earlier announced that they were investigating. Fargo police have now also opened an investigation.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Williams County officials have fined a Texas company $2.6 million for illegal temporary housing.
Houston-based Stallion Oilfield Services failed to follow conditions of a permit
County zoning investigator Kameron Hymer says Stallion was originally approved for 25 units in 2011 but had placed more than twice the amount of units at the site.
Hymer says the company has been attaching five and six units together and calling them one unit. The company has been ordered to remove the extra units.
Officials say if the company fails to pay the fine and doesn’t remove the units by Dec. 30, the county will assess additional fines for all 54 units currently on site.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A University of North Dakota fraternity is attempting to rebuild after being shut down two years ago in the wake of drug arrests.
Fraternity executive Bob Wolfey has spent the last two months in Grand Forks, recruiting members and developing the plan for reinstatement.
The Oxford Ohio-based fraternity suspended its Grand Forks chapter after eight members and a pledge were either cited or charged with drug offenses following a search warrant by the Grand Forks Area Narcotics Task Force in 2011.
Forty-four members have been selected as members in a so-called “colony,” which means it is a chapter under probation. It will remain a colony until at least fall semester of 2014, when members will seek to regain their charter from the national organization.
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – Mandan Mayor Arlyn Van Beek says city officials will work to recruit another downtown grocery store to replace one that’s set to close.
Central Market is closing.
Van Beek says a grocery store on Main Street anchors the central business district and is needed. The mayor says the decision to find a new grocer ultimately is up to the private sector but the city will help by “making contacts or through economic development programs.”
A new Walmart Supercenter opened in Mandan in September.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The next head football coach at North Dakota State says the powerful Football Championship Subdivision program will continue to reload, not rebuild.
School officials announced Sunday that Chris Klieman will be taking over for Craig Bohl, the most successful football coach in school history. Bohl is leaving for Wyoming.
The 47-year-old Klieman is completing his third season as an assistant coach with the Bison, the last two as defensive coordinator. He previously served as an assistant coach for nine years at Northern Iowa.
Klieman says he has talked with Bohl several times over the last few years about being a head coach.
Klieman, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, played defensive back at Northern Iowa.
The two-time defending FCS champion Bison face New Hampshire in Friday’s semifinal at the Fargodome.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Sam Ojuri rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns as top-seeded North Dakota State crushed Coastal Carolina 48-14 in a FCS quarterfinal game Saturday.
The Bison host New Hampshire in the semifinals Friday, December 20, 2013 at 7pm on ESPN2, CSi Cable 18.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Late-season mountain lion hunting in southwestern North Dakota is closed, after the seventh big cat was killed.
The state Game and Fish Department announced the closure on Sunday. Officials say five of the seven-cat quota were killed in Zone 1 over the weekend.
The state Game and Fish Department says there is no quota in Zone 2, which is the rest of the state. The hunting season there is open through next March.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL…
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Troy Huff scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Chad Calcaterra added 11 with 12 rebounds as North Dakota romped Presentation College of the NAIA 78-32 Sunday.
North Dakota (3-6) jumped out to an 18-0 lead capped by a Quinton Hooker 3-pointer and two Jaron Nash free throws. They closed the half on a 26-7 run as Aaron Anderson, Cole Stefan and Josh Schuler each sank 3-pointers.
North Dakota led by as much as 47 in the second half, coasting to a 50.8 shooting percentage in Grand Forks. Anderson finished with 10 points. Jamal Webb contributed five assists and Huff had five of North Dakota’s 14 steals.
The game was an exhibition for Presentation, which shot just 9 of 62 from the field (14.5 percent) and didn’t score until the 12:12 mark in the first half on a Terry Strong 3-pointer. Strong led the Saints with eight points and nine boards.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Matt Cassel passed for 382 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score to lead the injury-depleted Vikings to a 48-30 victory over Philadelphia yesterday. With Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart out, Matt Asiata rushed for the first three touchdowns of his career and Greg Jennings caught a career-high 11 passes for 163 yards for the Vikings (4-9-1). Asiata ran for 51 yards on 30 carries.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Matt Flynn threw four touchdown passes in the second half, Eddie Lacy had the winning score on a 1-yard plunge and the Green Bay Packers matched the biggest comeback in franchise history, rallying from 23 points down at halftime to beat the Dallas Cowboys 37-36 yesterday. The Packers (7-6-1) kept their playoff hopes alive with Aaron Rodgers possibly returning next week.
Jay Cutler returned to the Bears lineup and after a rusty start to the game led Chicago to a 38-31 win over the Browns in Cleveland. Cutler, who missed Chicago’s previous four games with a sprained left ankle, threw a 4-yard TD pass to Earl Bennett with 5:41 left to give the Bears a record of 8-6. The Browns fell to 4-10, giving them at least 10 losses in six straight seasons.
Seattle continues to set the pace in the NFL with a record of 12-2. The Seahawks walked all over the Giants 23-0
Playing in front of their own fans, the Miami Dolphins beat the Patriots 24-20. The win keeps the Miami playoff hopes alive.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas coach Mack Brown says he’s resigning because his teams haven’t been living up to the winning standard he helped create. In a news conference he said he had been told by school officials that he could stay on but that after thinking things through, he decided the best thing to do was retire. Brown’s teams won 10 games every year from 2001-09 and won the national championship after the 2005 season.

UNDATED (AP) – Peyton Manning is Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year.
Manning has led Denver to an 11-3 record this year, his second with the Broncos after missing the 2011 season with Indianapolis because of neck troubles that affected his right triceps. He has thrown 47 touchdown passes, three shy of Tom Brady’s NFL season record.

BEIRUT (AP) – Syrian activists say government warplanes are conducting a new round of airstrikes today on the northern city of Aleppo and the southern province of Daraa. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says air raids on Aleppo yesterday killed at least 76 people, including 28 children. Another activist group puts the death toll higher and says it is likely to rise further because of the large number of wounded and the lack of sufficient medical supplies in the city.
GENEVA (AP) – The United Nations and other humanitarian groups say nearly $13 billion is needed to help people in 17 countries in crisis. Half of the amount is needed for Syria and its surrounding region alone. U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos says the aim is to reach 52 million people. Last year, the agencies requested $13.6 billion, but received only 60 percent of the amount.
MIAMI (AP) – Two Guantanamo Bay prisoners have been transferred to Saudi Arabia after a security review. Records show both men were suspected members of al-Qaida and were considered to be at high risk of rejoining the terror group if released. The Pentagon says the transfer brings the Guantanamo population to 160 prisoners as the Obama administration renews efforts to close the offshore U.S. prison.
UNDATED (AP) – A neighbor of a 9-year-old Ohio girl killed over the weekend is scheduled to appear in a court today on an aggravated murder charge. Reann Murphy was last seen Saturday night playing outdoors at the mobile home park where she lived in Smithville, about 30 miles southwest of Akron. Her body was found in a nearby trash bin on Sunday. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says 24-year-old Jerrod Metsker was arrested 12 hours later. The sheriff would not say how the girl was killed or offer a motive.
SHORT HILLS, N.J. (AP) – Law enforcement officers in New Jersey are searching for two suspects in the shooting death of a man at an upscale mall last night. The victim, whose name has not been released, had just finished holiday shopping with his wife at The Mall at Short Hills. Two men confronted the couple as they walked to their Range Rover, shot the man in the head and took off in the vehicle. The victim’s wife was not injured.
