VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — A well-known North Dakota pilot who has participated in air shows throughout the country died after his plane crashed while he was practicing for a Valley City show.

Robert Odegaard, 66, of Kindred, died Friday when his 1945 Super Corsair airplane went down at the Barnes County Municipal Airport at 5:55 p.m, the Highway Patrol said.

Witnesses said Odegaard was attempting a barrel roll prior to the crash.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Troy Hischer said authorities aren’t yet sure if the crash was caused by mechanical or human error.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration arrived on the scene Friday night, which had two agents investigating the site Saturday in Valley City.

“Something went terribly wrong and he crashed,” Hischer told the (Fargo) Forum newspaper.

Larry Welken, vice chairman of the airport’s board of directors, was on the field helping fuel planes when the crash happened.

“It looked like he was possibly trying to get out of the plane, like he knew something was wrong,” said Welken, a pilot for 35 years. “He just plowed into the ground.”

An eyewitness said , no smoke was noticed coming from the plane, and no explosion occurred before the plane went down.

There was a small fire was on the ground that was possibly ignited by fuel.

Odegaard founded and operated Odegaard Aviation, a fixed-base operation and aerial spray firm. He was active in the formation of the Fargo Air Museum, where he was a board member. He also was a member of the board of directors for the North Dakota Aviation Association.

Odegaard has received numerous aviation honors, including the Henderson Air Racing History Award, the Aviation Mechanic Safety Award, the 1999 Aviation Heritage Trophy, and the 1999 People’s Choice National Aviation Heritage Invitation.

He also had been involved with production of the aviation movie “Thunder Over Reno.”

“I’m kind of stung by it. It’s a shock,” said Dick Walstad, co-chairman of the Fargo air show. “He’s one of those guys where if it had wings, he could fly it.”

Dennis Helland, chairman of the Barnes County Airport Authority, says that Odegaard was a legend in the flying community and was known nationwide.

The Valley City air show has been cancelled. Said Helland, “People that are scheduled to perform … don’t want to fly.”

The 36-year-old man from Minnesota was not immediately identified. Authorities say he was working on Bismarck’s new $16 million water intake project when the incident happened Sunday afternoon.

He was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Authorities are turning over the investigation to the Occupational Health and Safety Administration.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – State, federal and military officials have
honored members of the North Dakota Air National Guard’s 119th Wing
for their service.
The first Hometown Heroes event was held in 2010 to honor those
who had served in the first eight years after the Sept. 11, 2001,
terror attacks.

The ceremony held Sunday in Fargo recognized those
who served more than 30 consecutive days of active duty between
Jan. 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2010.
Gov. Jack Dalrymple, Sen. John Hoeven, Rep. Rick Berg, Maj. Gen.
David Sprynczynatyk, and others took part in the ceremony that
recognized about 250 airmen and their families.

GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) – Grafton school officials say enrollment is
growing thanks to North Dakota’s oil boom on the opposite side of
the state.
Enrollment in the Grafton Public Schools is rising after a decline
of more than 40 years. Superintendent Jack Maus says Grafton’s
first-day enrollment this year was 895 students, up 62 from last
year.
The gain in students in the northeastern North Dakota city is
linked to an increase in jobs. Many of those jobs are at Diverse
Energy Systems, which makes storage tanks for the oil sites in the
western part of the state.
Maus says some Grafton residents commute to jobs in the oil
fields, which opens up their previous jobs in Grafton for
newcomers.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Chief Justice Gerald
VandeWalle (VAN’-duh-wall) says a report on western North Dakota’s
judicial system is a “useful tool” for asking the Legislature to
give some help.
The state Bar Association report says western North Dakota needs
at least two more judges and additional clerks and other court
personnel.
It recommends hiring at least one more lawyer for the state’s
public defender system.
North Dakota has 44 district judges who handle trials. The
courts in western North Dakota’s oil country have had a big
increase in work as the industry has grown.
VandeWalle says the Supreme Court hasn’t decided how many new
judgeships to request from the Legislature.

He says North Dakota’s growth hasn’t been limited to the west, and court workloads are growing statewide.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Several states in the Midwest have tried to
claim the title of Silicon Prairie over the years, but leaders in
North Dakota say they should be considered for the coveted
technology title.
Business and political leaders who gathered at technology
conference in Fargo last week say the budget surplus and lack of
serious socio-economic problems makes North Dakota an ideal place
for tech companies to grow up.
Republican Senator John Hoeven says the state has more than
16,000 open jobs, about 60 percent of which are outside the
oil-producing counties, including many of what he called
“high-paying, high-tech positions” in the Red River Valley.

In sports…

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota State University official says
the school’s football players who have been charged with faking
petition signatures to get measures on the November ballot will not
be suspended from the team.
Officials earlier said any discipline would wait until after the
criminal case was resolved.
But after the Bison defeated Colorado State 22-7 Saturday, NDSU
athletic director Gene Taylor says there will be no suspensions because the
players don’t deserve suspensions.
At least nine players are charged with faking signatures on
petitions to put two citizen initiatives on the ballot.

One would set up a state conservation fund and the other would make marijuana legal for medical treatments.
With the suspect petitions disqualified, neither initiative had
enough signatures to get on the ballot.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota youth ages 12 to 15 can take
to the field in search of deer later this week.
The 9  1/2-day youth deer hunting season starts at noon on Friday.
Each youth hunter must be under the direct supervision of an adult
while hunting.
Licensed youth ages 12 and 13 can hunt antlerless white-tailed
deer statewide.

Those 14 and 15 with a “youth season” license can
hunt statewide for any deer, except antlerless mule deer in certain
units.

A special license is needed to hunt antlered mule deer in
those units, which can be found on the state Game and Fish
Department website at http://www.gf.nd.gov .
North Dakota’s main deer season – the gun season – is Nov. 9-25.

league would have liked.

several minutes to determine whether the Seahawks had any timeouts
left after calling one in the closing seconds.

     In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – Congress is facing some big issues. But it’s
not likely lawmakers will address most of them as they reconvene
today.

With the election less than two months away, the focus in
this abbreviated session appears to be on the bare minimum
–passing a six-month temporary spending bill to prevent a
government shutdown when the budget year ends Sept. 30.

CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he’ll work to end
the city’s teachers strike quickly.
