JetstreamJan8eastendJamestown (CSi)  Law enforecment agencies Thursday evening were searching for an individual reportedly connected to a robbery at Jetsteam Car Wash on 10th Street, Southeast in Jamestown.

Jamestown Police Department Major, John Johnson says the robbery was reported at 7:42 p.m.  No injuries were reported.

He says no weapon was observed by the clerk on duty, with the suspect who entered the store  described as a male about 6-feet tall, wearing jeans, a light coat with a hood, with his face covered.

He asked for money and left the store, on foot through a nearby alley.

No word on the amount of money taken.

Agencies responding included the Jamestown Police Department, the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office and the North Dakota Highway Patrol, who immediately patrolled the area in a search effort.

Jetstream Car Wash is just down the street from from  Cenex store at the corner of Fourth Avenue and 10th Street Southeast, that was robbed on December  15th.

Police would not speculate if the two robberies are connected.

Jamestown (CSi) Two North Dakota men who allegedly assaulted a man on at a Southeast Jamestown location on Thanskgiving Day 2013, have pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault.

Thursday, 26 year old Shawn Laber, of Mohall, appeared at his arraignment and preliminary hearing in Southeast District Court charged with aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. He waived the preliminary hearing and pleaded not guilty to both Class C felony charges in the arraignment held immediately after the preliminary hearing.

He remains in the Stutsman County Correctional Center on a $1,000 cash bond.

On January 2nd 35 year old Ernest Castillo, of Jamestown, appeared in court on the same charges.

At his preliminary hearing, in Jametown, Castillo pleaded not guilty to the aggravated assault charge at the arraignment that followed. Judge Thomas Merrick dismissed the conspiracy to commit charge as he found there was no probable cause.

Castillo is free on a personal recognizance bond.

The maximum penalty for a Class C felony is five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

According to court records, Laber and Castillo were involved in an altercation at a Southeast Jamestown residence, with a 36-year-old Jamestown man around 4 p.m.

The record states that the man was dating a former girlfriend of Castillo, and he went to the resident to talk with Castillo about “threatening statements” Castillo allegedly made about the man.

Court documents further state that when the man arrived, Castillo and Laber allegedly attacked the victim with Laber allegedly hitting the man while holding a steak knife, causing a small wound on his neck.

Valley City (CSi) Valley City Fire/Rescue was called to the scene of an accident around 5-p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Second Avenue East, and Main.

Two vans collided with the impact sending one of the vans into the northwest corner of the Pizza Corner building, which inflicted significant damage to the structure.

Valley City fire and rescue extricated the driver of the South Central Transit Network van Mark Ostgardern, who received minor injuries, and was treated and released from Mercy Hospital in Valley City.

There were no passengers in the van and no one in the restaurant was injured.

Pizza Corner’s Denise Olson, said she and two others were behind the front counter at the time of the accident, and the restaurant was able to continue with business as usual, with customers directed through another door to the business.

Icy street conditions were reported at the time of the accident.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police have identified a homeless man whose body was found under a truck.

Someone at a nearby business discovered the body of 48-year-old Randy Lafontaine on Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say there’s no evidence of a crime and that exposure to cold might have been a factor in the death. It’s still under investigation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck police say a homeless woman’s in jail on allegations she didn’t take care of her three kids.

The Bismarck Tribune reports 34-year-old Ruthann Janeen Mountain was charged Thursday with three counts of felony child abuse or neglect.

A judge set bond at $5,000 cash and ordered her not to have contact with the children unless authorized by social services.

A police affidavit says a woman at an apartment reported Wednesday that Mountain had left the children with her. The kids are 7, 3 and 1. The woman said Mountain has been living in the hallway and the children never change clothes, bathe or eat.

Police say one of the kids has a bladder infection that spread to her kidneys.

It’s not clear if Mountain has an attorney.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Members of North Dakota’s congressional delegation say they believe federal officials are moving quickly to deal with issues surrounding a tanker derailment and fiery explosion outside of Casselton.

Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp (HYT’-kamp) met on Thursday with Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and Cynthia Quarterman. She is the pipeline and hazardous materials safety administration administrator.

Both senators say they were happy with the officials’ response to the derailment. Hoeven says Foxx would like to propose a new rule for fuel transportation in “weeks not months” and also plans to visit North Dakota to discuss the issue.

Heitkamp says the meeting was about setting a timetable and a path going forward. She says Foxx made it clear that improvements were a top priority.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Historical Society is slated to decide whether the state should purchase of Lawrence Welk’s boyhood home in the south central North Dakota town of Strasburg.

Historical Society Director Merl Paaverud (PAH’-vuhr-ood) says he expects the agency’s board to make the decision Friday to buy the bandleader’s birthplace.

The Legislature this year included $100,000 in the Historical Society’s budget for the purchase but lawmakers stipulated that repairs must be made before the purchase.

The idea comes two decades after Congress earmarked $500,000 in federal funds to develop a tourist industry in Strasburg. The money included a museum of German-Russian heritage that was intended to draw visitors to the bandleader’s birthplace.

Lawmakers later withdrew the money when the idea was mocked as a national symbol of wasteful spending.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Health Department is reporting widespread cases of the flu for the first time this season.

Officials are reminding state residents that it’s not too late to get vaccinated.

Influenza Surveillance Coordinator Jill Baber says 843 cases of lab-confirmed flu have been reported, up from 88 cases about a month ago.

Most of the cases are linked to the H1N1 virus, the same strain that caused a pandemic four years ago. This year’s influenza vaccine protects against the H1N1 strain.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Longtime Grand Forks Police Chief John Packett plans to retire at the end of next month.

The 65-year-old Packett has been in charge of the Grand Forks force since 1997.  He  plans to return to the Omaha, Neb., area, where he lived before coming to Grand Forks.

West Fargo Police Chief Arland Rasmussen also has announced plans to retire in June, after 19 years leading the force in that eastern North Dakota city.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – State health officials are monitoring a saltwater spill that flowed into a stream in southwestern North Dakota’s Bowman County.

The Health Department says Texas-based Denbury Onshore LLC reported that 50 barrels – or about 2,100 gallons – spilled at a well site about 10 miles south of Marmarth. The spill flowed downhill and reached Kid Creek.

The spill has been contained, and state health inspectors will be doing testing in the area to assess the impact to the environment.

Saltwater is a byproduct of oil production.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A Texas company is appealing a $2.6 million fine for allegedly illegal temporary housing for its workers in the western North Dakota oil patch.

Williams County late last year fined Houston-based Stallion Oilfield Services for failing to follow conditions of a permit. Zoning officials say Stallion was originally approved for 25 units in 2011 but placed more than twice that amount at a site.

Stallion attorney Joel Gilbertson says the company and the county differ in how units should be counted. The company considers several units connected together to be one unit, a method the county disagrees with.

Stallion attorney Robert Ryan says he also takes issue with the “massive” fine amount.

The  commission plans to decide on Tuesday whether to uphold the fine.

BAGHDAD (AP) – Fierce clashes have erupted between Iraqi special forces and al-Qaida-linked militants in a village in Iraq’s western Anbar province. An official says today’s clashes are happening in an area that lies between the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi, which al-Qaida linked fighters overran last week, seizing control of police stations and military posts, freeing prisoners and setting up their own checkpoints. Iraq’s government had held off on an all-out offensive to avoid civilian casualties.

BEIRUT (AP) – Activists say fighting this past week in northern Syria has killed nearly 500 people. The rebel-on-rebel violence broke out a week ago and has spread across four provinces in opposition-held parts of the north. The fighting between an al-Qaida-linked group and a loose alliance of more moderate and ultraconservative rebel brigades is the most serious infighting among opponents of President Bashar Assad since the country’s conflict began in March 2011.
