 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Another Alberta clipper is bearing down on the Dakotas, but forecasters say it won’t be nearly as strong as the one that swept through Thursday.
 
     The storm that blew in from western Canada with winds gusting as strong as 76 mph snarled traffic, shut down schools, and damaged everything from trees and flags to signs and buildings.
 
     National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Abeling says it’s one of the strongest clipper systems he’s seen in a while. He says another one is expected Friday night into Saturday, but with wind gusts of up to only about 40 mph.
 
     A wind advisory is in place for central North Dakota for late Friday and early Saturday including the Jamestown area.  A winter weather advisory has been posted for northeast and east central South Dakota.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Police Department is warning residents of a convicted sex offender, living in Jamestown.

31 year old Thomas Stewart Maedche is living at 2308 Circle Drive, North Dakota State Hospital in Jamestown.

He is 31 years old a white male five feet nine inches tall, weighing 245 pound with brown eyes and brown hair.

Maedche was convicted of indecent exposure, in Burleigh County District Court, with a conviction date of June 17, 2008. Disposition: one year, with six months suspended with two years supervised probation.

Maedche was convicted of sexual assault, with a conviction date of November 9, 1995 in Burleigh County District Court. Disposition: Juvenile Placement.

Maedche was convicted on sexual assault on May 3, 1994 in Burleigh County District Court. Dispostion, unknown.

Maedche is on GPS Monitoring.

Maedche is not wanted by police at this time, and has served the sentence imposed by the court. This notification is meant for public safety and not to increase fear in the community.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Council will hold a Special Meeting on Tuesday January 28, 2014, at 5-p.m.

The agenda item is the purchase and sale agreement between the City of Jamestown and big box home improvement store.

　

UPDATE…

Jamestown (CSi)  According to Matt Leitner, manager at Jamestown Regional Airport, Great Lakes Airline has released a schedule change for Jamestown. 

Starting Monday, Jan 20,  Great Lakes Airline will reduce service to only 1 flight a day from and to Minneapolis, Sunday through Friday.  There will be no flights on Saturday.  This will bring the total weekly flights to 6, on the 19 passenger  Beech 1900 turbo-prop.

Passengers are encouraged to check with their travel agent or the airline to see how the schedule change will impact their reservations and for exact flight times.   The “no Saturday flights” goes into effect Jan 18, 2014. 

Earlier this week, the Airport Authority approved covering the expenses of sending Chairman Jim Boyd, Jamestown Regional Airport Manager Matt Leitner and Mayor Katie Andersen to Washington later this month to answer questions about the bid from SkyWest Airlines to provide essentail air service to Jamestown.

The bids are advertised, reviewed, and awarded by the United States Department of Transportation for the FAA.

Regional Airport Authority Chairman Jim Boyd says DOT officials have some concerns about the SkyWest Airlines bid.

The SkyWest Airlines bid is a one flight daily roundtrip from Denver to Jamestown using a 50-seat jet airplane. The DOT minimum bid for a 50-seat jet airplane service to Jamestown is two daily flights.

SkyWest’s bid would require a higher subsidy from the federal government because its plane would be traveling a greater distance.

Prior to the schedule reduction, Great Lakes Airlines, which currently provides service to Jamestown Regional Airport, submitted a bid to continue providing service to Jamestown with three roundtrip flights daily from Devils Lake/Jamestown to Minneapolis, using 19-seat turboprop airplanes.    It is unknown if Great Lakes plans to withdraw or revise that bid, after the airline reduced flights.

The original bid meets the DOT’s minimum bid requirement for turboprop airplanes.

The Regional Airport Authority has recommended the SkyWest Airlines bid to the DOT.

Boyd says he hopes the state’s congressional representatives, including Senator Heidi Heitkamp, Senator John Hoeven, R-N.D., and Representative Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., will be able to answer questions from DOT officials about the SkyWest bid.

Leitner said Great Lakes Airlines continues to have problems getting full flight crews for its flights due to changes in FAA requirements for co-pilots, increasing the minimum number of flight hours a co-pilot must have in order to be part of a flight crew for a passenger flight from 250 hours to 1,500 hours.

The change has put qualified co-pilots in high demand for all airlines.

 

Valley City (CSi) The former recreational vehicle park, is the planned location for a McDonald’s restaurant for Valley City.

The location is to the back of the Wagon Wheel Inn.

McDonald’s will lease the property.

More announcements are expected in about two months.

 

 TIOGA, N.D. (AP) – Thirteen cars from an eastbound train carrying mostly empty truck containers and trailers derailed about 35 miles east of Williston on Thursday morning.
 
     Williams County Emergency Services tells KFGO radio that it’s possible that 60 mph winds from a powerful winter storm might have caused the derailment.
 
     BNSF spokesman Steve Forsberg says the company hasn’t determined the cause but there was unusual weather in the area.
 
     The derailment has blocked the main BNSF line, and customers have been told to expect delays of 36 hours to 48 hours. Forsberg says that could change depending on an assessment by repair crews.
 
     On December 30th, a train carrying crude oil derailed and caught fire about a mile from Casselton, prompting the evacuation of about 1,400 people. No one was hurt.

 

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. officials say companies need to come up with safer ways to transport oil on the nation’s rail lines following some explosive accidents as crude trains proliferate across North America. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx met with oil and railroad executives Thursday in Washington, D.C. The meeting came after a series of derailments in North Dakota, Alabama and in Canada.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man has pleaded guilty to dealing drugs out of a trailer home on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Chadwick Cummings is charged in federal court with maintaining drug-involved premises. Authorities say he used the residence to distribute methamphetamine and heroin to several people. He faces up to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced April 21.

 

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Spokane police have recovered a gun they believe was used to kill businessman Doug Carlile, and now suspect the crime might be a contract killing tied to troubled business dealings in North Dakota’s oil fields.
 
     This week’s search of a car shop belonging to a co-worker of alleged shooter Timothy Suckow produced multiple weapons. They include a handgun police suspect was used to kill the 63-year-old Carlile on December 15th.
 
     The 50-year-old Suckow is charged with first-degree murder and is being held on $2 million bail.
 
     The Spokesman-Review reported Thursday that police searched a Spokane home where they seized several rifles and handguns said by the homeowner to belong to Suckow. Court documents said that included a .45-caliber handgun that matches the description of the weapon used to kill Carlile.

 

TIOGA, N.D. (AP) – Unofficial results show that voters in the western oil patch city of Tioga have approved a $9.9 million bond issue to pay for the expansion of existing schools.
 
218 voters were in favor Thursday and only 81 were opposed. That’s 73 percent approval, far higher than the 60 percent required.
 
     The Tioga school district has seen its student body more than double in recent years due to the oil boom. The expansion project will add on to both the elementary school and high school.
 
     Superintendent D’Wayne Johnson says the plan will raise property taxes on a $200,000 home by about $256 a year.

 

     BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Officials from the federal government and electric utilities are slated to gather at in Bismarck to discuss how proposed regulation on carbon emissions could affect North Dakota. The daylong symposium organized by the North Dakota Public Service Commission will be held Wednesday at the state Capitol.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Independent Beef Association of North Dakota says it will oppose efforts to double the $1-per-head checkoff that state ranchers pay when they sell cattle.
 
     The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association plans to ask the Legislature next year to double the checkoff to provide more money for beef research, education and promotion. Ranchers would have the option of asking for a refund of the additional dollar.
 
     IBAND President Kenny Graner says any checkoff increase should be decided by ranchers nationwide – not by state lawmakers.  And he says having to ask for a refund would be a headache for ranchers.
 
     IBAND formed about eight years ago after becoming unhappy with the Stockmen’s Association. IBAND has about 270 members, while the Stockmen’s has about 3,000.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Taylor Braun had 20 points and North Dakota State shot 54.2 percent on Thursday night in a 91-69 home victory against Nebraska-Omaha.
 
     The Bison opened the game on a 10-2 run, led by as many as 15 in the first half and cruised to victory in the second.
 
     Lawrence Alexander had 14 points, Mike Felt had 13 and Marshall Bjorklund added 11. TrayVonn Wright and Kory Brown each added 10 for NDSU (13-5, 2-1 Summit League).
 
     After falling behind 22-9, Omaha (10-7, 0-2) answered with a 13-6 run to close within six and managed to keep the halftime deficit at 10.
 
     The Mavericks missed their first 7 shots from the field in the second half to create a 17-point gap as they went scoreless for the first 4 1/2 minutes in Fargo.

 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The University of Minnesota is getting ready to host its first outdoor hockey game in modern history. The top-ranked Gopher men’s team will host the 2014 Hockey City Classic today at TCF Bank Stadium. The outdoor doubleheader starts at 4:30 p.m. with the No. 1 Gopher women’s team talking on Minnesota State, Mankato, followed by the Minnesota men against Ohio State at 8:10 p.m. Some 4,500 to 5,000 fans are expected for the game. The forecast calls for a chance of snow in the evening, with daytime highs expected to reach only 11 above.

 

 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minneapolis skyline could begin to change this weekend.
 
     Power inside the Minnesota Vikings’ Metrodome is scheduled to be cut Saturday and the giant white top that’s been part of the skyline for more than 32 years will begin deflating.
 
     Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority chairwoman Michele Kelm-Helgen says if the wind is too strong Saturday, the deflation will be delayed.
 
     Many Minnesotans have fond memories of the Metrodome. Others can’t wait to see it torn down.
 
     KSTP-TV says Bill Lester is somewhere in between. He took one last tour of the stadium he ran for 25 years as director of the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission. Lester says he has some great memories of two World Series, a Super Bowl and a Final Four game. But, he says it’s time to move on to the next generation of stadiums.

 PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) – Major League Baseball will expand its replay system starting this season after the players and umpires okayed the package. Under the plan each manager will be allowed to challenge at least one call per game. If he’s right, he gets another challenge. After the seventh inning, a crew chief can request a review on his own.
 There will be a special communication area near home plate that will have direct access to baseball’s headquarters in New York where other umpires will view videos and make the final decisions.
 

NEW YORK (AP) – Tampa Bay left-hander David Price got a big deal, a $14 million, one-year contract yesterday. But that will be just a small fraction of the mega-contract Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers are likely to finalize today as the Dodgers are expected to officially announce that southpaw’s seven-year, $210 million-dollar deal.

  MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Serena Williams is now the winningest women ever at the Australian Open. The five-time Australian Open champion notched her 61st career victory Down Under, beating Daniela Hantuchova (han-TOO’-koh-vuh) 6-2, 6-2 on another steamy day at Melbourne Park.

  On the men’s side, third-seeded David Ferrer advanced to the fourth round for a 10th consecutive Grand Slam when he beat No. 29 Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-2. No. 7 Tomas Berdych beat Bosnian qualifier Damir Dzumhur 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

     LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) – Patrick Reed went low in perfect scoring and weather conditions, firing a 9-under 63 for the first-round lead at the Humana Challenge. Ryan Palmer, Justin Hicks, Daniel Summerhays and Charley Hoffman shot 64 in the first full field event stateside this year on the PGA Tour.
 
     Zach Johnson, winner of the season opening event at Kapalua, topped the group at 65.

     CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – NASCAR team co-owner Gene Haas has applied to own a Formula One team.
 
     Haas is co-owner with Tony Stewart of Stewart-Haas Racing. He confirmed that Haas Racing Development “has responded to the FIA’s ‘call for expression of interest’ regarding a Formula One entry.”
 
     Formula One’s governing body said in December it would accept applications through Jan. 3 for new teams that would begin in either the 2015 or 2016 season.

LUCASVILLE, Ohio (AP) – Family members of death row inmate Dennis McGuire plan to announce a lawsuit against the state of Ohio today after McGuire’s unusually long execution using a new two drug method. Witnesses say the condemned man appeared to gasp several times. It’s also expected lawyers will use McGuire’s execution to challenge another scheduled next month.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – A senior administration official says President Barack Obama is going to recommend that someone else handle the storage of phone data on Americans gathered by the National Security Agency. The official says Obama will not say who it should be. Obama is scheduled to make a speech today calling for modest changes to U.S. snooping methods.

 
     DETROIT (AP) – Detroit police say a 4-year-old boy is dead, shot accidentally by his 4-year-old cousin. Police say the girl found a loaded rifle under a bed at a relative’s home. Sgt. Michael Woody says the girl picked up the rifle, pointed it at the boy and shot him once in the chest. 
 
     BEIJING (AP) – A crackdown on microblogs deemed sensitive by government authorities and new controls on what can be posted are apparently having an impact in China. The China Internet Network Information Center says the number of microblog users dropped by nearly 28 million last year. One analyst says people are finding alternative ways to communicate.
 
     LACEY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) – A camel with a knack for picking Super Bowl winners has died. Princess was a fixture at the Popcorn Park Zoo in Lacey Township, N.J. Zoo manager John Bergmann tells the Asbury Park Press the camel was euthanized after arthritis made it impossible for her to stand. Princess correctly picked the Baltimore Ravens in last year’s Super Bowl. New Jersey hosts the game this year.
