Jamestown (CSi) Paws4WARD, The Anne Carlsen Center, and Guide Dogs in Jud are raising funds to provide service dogs to four veterans in the Wounded Warriors project.
On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Service Dogs for America, and Karmel Wanzek representing Paws4WARD talked about a fundraising event set for Sunday February 9, 2014, from 2-6-p.m., at Quality Inn & Suites in Jamestown.
Shelley said a bill passed in the 2013 North Dakota legislative session set aside dollars to help sponsor four service dogs for vets with PTSD.
The amount does not cover the total cost of each dog, which can be as high as $20,000.
Karmel said, a creation of the Dale Carnegie program, Paws4WARD has developed the Purses for a Purpose, a purse exchange where new and gently used designer purses are exchanged, with general admission at $20, and the VIP admission of $25, which allows early entrance to the purse exchange. No reservations will be taken, and only 200 tickets will be sold. 100% of funds raised goes to veterans, in need of service dogs.
Tickets can be ordered by calling Crystal Nehlich at 701-845-2712, or Shelley Nanenga at 701-658-0330, Quality Inn & Suites, First Community Credit Union in Jamestown, Unison Bank in Jamestown, and Dacotah Bank in Valley City. Call 701-658-0330 to have a purse picked up. Also E-Mail Shelley at: shelley@servicedogsforamerica.org
They pointed out that several sponsors have come on board, and there will be a silent auction, champagne, and hor de’ourves at the event. More sponsors are being accepted.
More fundraisers are planned, to reach the goal of providing the four service dogs and the balance of the costs not covered in the legislative designation, which is divided among four programs in North Dakota.
Upcoming fundraisers planned include Pennys for Paws, and a dart tournament with dates and locations to be announced.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CSi) U.S. Senators Heidi Heitkamp and John Hoeven, as well as Congressman Kevin Cramer, made a strong case to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for regular and dependable air service to Devils Lake and Jamestown Regional Airports.
The delegation also addressed potential concerns that have been raised regarding the approval of Essential Air Service (EAS) contracts that provide reliable service for Jamestown and Devils Lake. EAS often supports economic development and job creation by enabling businesses to more easily access rural communities.
Additionally, on Monday, January 27, 2014, Heitkamp and Hoeven will host Susan Kurland, DOT Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs, in Heitkamp’s office to discuss recent challenges regarding the current air service to the communities and express their interest in a reliable service being approved for the communities. A representative from Congressman Kevin Cramer’s office will also attend the meeting. Devils Lake Mayor Richard Johnson and
Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen, along with the communities’ airport authority leadership, will participate in the meeting as well.
In a letter to Secretary Foxx the delegation Wrote: “Both Devils Lake and Jamestown have experienced numerous problems with their current EAS contract, and have communicated an interest in pursuing a new route option to Denver, which will provide a competitive option for customers. Because there are fewer regular routes to Denver from North Dakota, the airports would be well positioned to attract ridership to the nearest major western hub and subsequent connecting cities.”
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) Cardiopulmonary Rehab Department has added phase III cardiopulmonary rehabilitation to its cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Phase III is an extension of the phase II cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation is a complete long-term service involving a medical assessment, prescribed exercise, cardiac risk factor modification with education, breathing retraining, pulmonary education, counseling and behavior interventions.
The phase III program continues the behavior modification strategies learned while attending phase II rehabilitation, enhances coronary heart disease or pulmonary disease management skills and establishes a commitment to preventing a secondary disease.
The phase III program is open to any individual who has completed the phase II cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program who could benefit from extended supervision and a slower transition into a maintenance program. It is also open to any cardiopulmonary rehab referrals not eligible for phase II cardiac or pulmonary rehab due to a non-qualifying diagnosis or inadequate insurance coverage.
For more information about cardiopulmonary rehabilitation at JRMC contact Emily Kjelland at (701) 952-4761 or visit www.jrmcnd.com.
Bismarck (CSi) The National Weather Service in Bismarck has issued the Flood Outlook for the spring of 2014, which says the flood risk for the James River basin is normal to slightly elevated.
The greatest contributor to the existing risk is this past wet fall, and a series of warm spells during an otherwise colder than normal winter, which has led to a frozen soil surface. That, greatly lowers the ability of the soil to retain much of the runoff from snowmelt and early spring rains.
The Weather Service adds, the outlook does not include the risk factor of ice jams or other ice affected high water.
It says there is reason to believe that the colder than normal winter, thus far, has produced a thicker sheet of ice on backwater areas, of all streams which could be problematic if the region experiences and early runoff, combined with rain.
The snow received thus far has generally been lower in water equivalent due to the colder temperatures.
Greg Gust and Mike Lukes with the National Weather Service say most Minnesota and North Dakota tributaries will likely have minor to moderate flooding.
Lukes says its early in the game but as of today the chances for moderate and major flooding in Valley City and Lisbon is less than 5 percent.
A moderate flood potential is possible for most of the Red River main stem. And a rise of 1 to 1 1/2 feet is expected on Devils Lake.
They say soils and streams are a bit “wet” in the far southern basin but otherwise near normal. The water content is generally running a bit low. And the rest of winter is likely to be colder than normal.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Forecasters in Grand Forks say the risk for substantial spring flooding is low along the Red River and Devils Lake Basin.
But they say winter is far from over and an early thaw is less likely.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – One of two white supremacists accused of terrorizing residents in the small North Dakota town of Leith (leeth) has pleaded guilty to reduced charges of menacing and disorderly conduct and is being released from jail.
Under terms of the plea agreement, 29-year-old Kynan (KEE’-nuhn) Dutton must testify against Craig Cobb, who has pleaded not guilty to felony terrorizing.
Dutton moved into a home in Leith owned by Cobb after Cobb last year asked people with white power views to help him take over the town. The two were arrested in mid-November for allegedly terrorizing residents with guns.
Dutton will be on probation for two years. A conviction on one of seven counts will stay on his record, meaning he can no longer buy guns.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. is strongly condemning a string of bombings in Egypt’s capital Friday that killed at least six people. The White House says President Barack Obama has been briefed on the Cairo bombings and violent clashes in cities across Egypt that left another 10 people dead. The attacks fueled fears of an increasing militant insurgency in retaliation for the military’s ouster last year of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and the subsequent crackdown on his Muslim Brotherhood. Hours after the bombings, angry residents joined security forces in clashes with Brotherhood supporters.
