Jamestown, (CSi) Jamestown Regional Airport Manager, Matt Leitner says Jamestown and Devils Lake were informed, on Monday (Jan 27, 2014) that Great Lakes intends to discontinue commercial air service effective February 1, 2014.

Leitner adds, due to a lack of qualified pilots Great Lakes is drastically scaling back Minneapolis St. Paul operations and exiting many markets. For affected markets, fares will be refunded and tickets will no longer be sold.

Letiner points that the North Dakota congressional delegation and North Dakota Aeronautics Commission have been apprised of the situation.

On Monday, Jamestown Regional Airport Authority Chairman Jim Boyd, Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen and Leitner participated in a conference call with Devils Lake, North Dakota Aeronautics, the federal congressional delegation and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Officials in both Devils Lake and Jamestown earlier endorsed a switch from Great Lakes to SkyWest Airlines to provide service under the federal Essential Air Service program. Great Lakes provides service on turboprop planes, while SkyWest flies jets. The federal Department of Transportation has the final say,and has until February 6, 2014, to make a decision on either of the two airlines making bids on the Jamestown EAS package, the present carrier, Great Lakes Airlines, or SkyWest.

The federal Department of Transportation has the final say.

Starting Monday, Jan 20, Great Lakes Airline reduced service to only 1 flight a day from and to Minneapolis, Sunday through Friday. There are no flights on Saturday. This brings the total weekly flights to 6, on the 19 passenger Beech 1900 turbo-prop.

 Great Lakes Airlines Statement:

CHEYENNE, Wyo., January 27, 2014 –  Effective February 1, 2014, Great Lakes Airlines will be suspending service from Devils Lake and Jamestown, ND; Fort Dodge and Mason City, IA; Ironwood, MI; and Thief River Falls, MN due to the severe industry-wide pilot shortage and its relative acute impact on Great Lakes.

Charles Howell, CEO released the following statement:

“Due to the unintended consequences of the new congressionally mandated pilot regulatory requirements, the Company feels it is in the best interest of our customers, communities, and employees to suspend service from these stations until we are able to rebuild our staff of pilots in order to provide reliable service.   We deeply regret and apologize for this inconvenience.”

All customers with future flights in any of these stations will be given refunds. Please begin your refund efforts with your initial booking source.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CSi) – U.S. Senators Heidi Heitkamp and John Hoeven today met with senior U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials to stress the need for regular and dependable air service to Devils Lake and Jamestown Regional Airports.

The DOT officials committed to Heitkamp and Hoeven that they would announce Essential Air Service (EAS) contracts for North Dakota communities this week. If a new airline is selected in the EAS process, Heitkamp, Hoeven and the DOT also committed to pressing for an expedited transition to new service after the new bids are announced. Expedited transition for Devils Lake and Jamestown is necessary because the current provider – Great Lakes Airlines – recently announced its intention to discontinue service on February 1, 2014.

The delegation addressed potential concerns that have been raised regarding the approval of EAS contracts, which provide reliable service for Jamestown and Devils Lake. EAS often supports economic development and job creation by enabling businesses to more easily access rural communities.

Also attending the meeting was a representative from Congressman Kevin Cramer’s office, Devils Lake Mayor Richard Johnson, Jamestown Mayor Katie Anderson, along with the communities’ airport authority leadership.

“We are working in lockstep with Devils Lake and Jamestown to make sure the Department of Transportation understands how important reliable air service is to both of these communities,” the Delegation said. “Over the years, we have seen firsthand the economic impact that EAS has had on Devils Lake and Jamestown – enabling businesses to expand and helping our rural communities grow. We will continue to work to put in place a long-term plan that will give local leaders and residents the assurance they deserve that there will be high-quality air service.”

Last week, the Delegation highlighted its support for Essential Air Service in North Dakota to DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx.

Detective David Peterson tells The Associated Press that police received the report of a homicide on Saturday. He says police have not confirmed the report nor have they found a body.

Peterson says police are looking for a bed mattress that is considered evidence in the case. He says the mattress may have been discarded along a roadway or ditch in the Minot area after being transported from Williston.

Peterson says the public should report any discarded mattress found in the region. But he says people should not touch the mattress or disturb the area.

The company lifted its conservation appeal in stages to safely return the system to full capacity.

The call for conservation came just as much of the territory confronted another stretch of bitter cold.

In world and national news…

COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) – There’s increased security in place Monday at a shopping mall in Columbia, Maryland. It reopened Monday afternoon, two days after a gunman killed two store employees and himself. Police have been looking at a journal belonging to the 19-year-old shooter, Darion Aguilar. They say it expressed “general unhappiness.” But after reading the contents of the journal, an officer who had been looking for the missing teen on the day of the shooting had been worried about the young man’s safety.

LONDON (AP) – Documents leaked by former NSA contactor Edward Snowden suggest that the apps on smartphones around the world could be a powerful ally for spy agencies. The publications outlined how the data could be harvested from apps such as Angry Birds or Google maps.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Three Senate Republicans want to repeal the new health care law and replace it with an alternative that eliminates most of the coverage mandates.      MIAMI (AP) – Florida Republican Congressman Trey Radel (RAY’-dul) is resigning from his House seat, two months after he pleaded guilty to a charge of cocaine possession.  CHICAGO (AP) – The frigid temperatures gripping the central U.S. for the second time in weeks are upending people’s routines and travel plans.

With the bitter weather settling in Monday across the Midwest, parents are bringing kids to work or just staying home because schools were closed, again. Companies that offer delivery services are being flooded with calls from customers eager to pay someone else to brave the severe weather. And cabdrivers say it’s so chilly that people are hailing them for trips only a block away – or even half a block.

Temperatures across the region were falling below zero Monday with wind chills in some areas forecast to dive below minus 40 degrees. And there’s no quick relief in sight as subzero highs were expected to dominate into Tuesday.
