BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Sens. John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp say federal Transportation Department officials have agreed to announce Essential Air Service contracts for North Dakota communities this week.

Great Lakes Airlines is pulling out of Jamestown and Devils Lake at the end of the week. Officials in both cities earlier endorsed a switch from Great Lakes to SkyWest Airlines to provide service under the federal Essential Air Service program, which subsidizes service to smaller cities.

Heitkamp and Hoeven say federal officials have committed to expediting the transition to SkyWest if the cities’ requests are approved. Great Lakes Airlines’ contract to provide service doesn’t expire until the end of March.

Great Lakes provides service on turboprop planes, while SkyWest flies jets.

Jamestown, (CSi) Jamestown Regional Airport Manager, Matt Leitner says Jamestown and Devils Lake were informed, on Monday (Jan 27, 2014) that Great Lakes intends to discontinue commercial air service effective February 1, 2014.

Leitner adds, due to a lack of qualified pilots Great Lakes is drastically scaling back Minneapolis St. Paul operations and exiting many markets. For affected markets, fares will be refunded and tickets will no longer be sold.

Letiner points that the North Dakota congressional delegation and North Dakota Aeronautics Commission have been apprised of the situation.

On Monday, Jamestown Regional Airport Authority Chairman Jim Boyd, Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen and Leitner participated in a conference call with Devils Lake, North Dakota Aeronautics, the federal congressional delegation and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Officials in both Devils Lake and Jamestown earlier endorsed a switch from Great Lakes to SkyWest Airlines to provide service under the federal Essential Air Service program. Great Lakes provides service on turboprop planes, while SkyWest flies jets. The federal Department of Transportation has the final say,and has until February 6, 2014, to make a decision on either of the two airlines making bids on the Jamestown EAS package, the present carrier, Great Lakes Airlines, or SkyWest.

The federal Department of Transportation has the final say.

Starting Monday, Jan 20, Great Lakes Airline reduced service to only 1 flight a day from and to Minneapolis, Sunday through Friday. There are no flights on Saturday. This brings the total weekly flights to 6, on the 19 passenger Beech 1900 turbo-prop.

Great Lakes Airlines, Monday issued a statement

CHEYENNE, Wyo., (CSi) January 27, 2014 – Effective February 1, 2014, Great Lakes Airlines will be suspending service from Devils Lake and Jamestown, ND; Fort Dodge and Mason City, IA; Ironwood, MI; and Thief River Falls, MN due to the severe industry-wide pilot shortage and its relative acute impact on Great Lakes.

CEO Charles Howell, released the following statement:

“Due to the unintended consequences of the new congressionally mandated pilot regulatory requirements, the Company feels it is in the best interest of our customers, communities, and employees to suspend service from these stations until we are able to rebuild our staff of pilots in order to provide reliable service. We deeply regret and apologize for this inconvenience.”

All customers with future flights in any of these stations will be given refunds. Please begin your refund efforts with your initial booking source.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CSi) – U.S. Senators Heidi Heitkamp and John Hoeven Monday met with senior U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials to stress the need for regular and dependable air service to Devils Lake and Jamestown Regional Airports.

The DOT officials committed to Heitkamp and Hoeven that they would announce Essential Air Service (EAS) contracts for North Dakota communities this week. If a new airline is selected in the EAS process, Heitkamp, Hoeven and the DOT also committed to pressing for an expedited transition to new service after the new bids are announced. Expedited transition for Devils Lake and Jamestown is necessary because the current provider – Great Lakes Airlines – recently announced its intention to discontinue service on February 1, 2014.

The delegation addressed potential concerns that have been raised regarding the approval of EAS contracts, which provide reliable service for Jamestown and Devils Lake. EAS often supports economic development and job creation by enabling businesses to more easily access rural communities.

Also attending the meeting was a representative from Congressman Kevin Cramer’s office, Devils Lake Mayor Richard Johnson, Jamestown Mayor Katie Anderson, along with the communities’ airport authority leadership.

The delegation said, “We are working in lockstep with Devils Lake and Jamestown to make sure the Department of Transportation understands how important reliable air service is to both of these communities. Over the years, we have seen firsthand the economic impact that EAS has had on Devils Lake and Jamestown – enabling businesses to expand and helping our rural communities grow. We will continue to work to put in place a long-term plan that will give local leaders and residents the assurance they deserve that there will be high-quality air service.”

Last week, the Delegation highlighted its support for Essential Air Service in North Dakota to DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx.

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department is asking the public to keep snowmobiles off Hillcrest Golf Course property, all city parks, and Park land located along 17th Avenue Southwest. Fines could be incurred.

Fargo (CSi) Jamestown and Valley City will host farmers for informational meetings about industrial beet production.

The meetings will update farmers on industrial beet processing development efforts in the state and answer grower questions about industrial beet production.

Five sites are proposed in North Dakota, including Jamestown and Valley City.

Industrial sugar beets are bred for the bio-fuels market, with a processing facility site, dependent on the availability of beet feedstock supplies in the proposed growing area.

The development of beets as an industrial crop is a partnership between Green Vision Group based in Fargo and Heartland Renewable Energy based in Iowa. The research component is led by NDSU.

NDSU Extension Educator, Randy Grueneich, says the first meeting will be held in Valley City on Tuesday, January 28 at the Eagles Club at 9am.

Other meetings are planned for Tuesday, January 28 from 1pm to 3pm at the Farmers Union Headquarters in Jamestown.

Then, on Wednesday, January 29 a meeting will be held in Carrington at the Research Extension Center from 9am to 11am.

Other meetings are planned for Cando on Wednesday, January 29 at 1pm in the NDSU Extension Service office and in Landon at the Research Extension Center Thursday, January 30 at 9am.

The public is encouraged to attend any of these meetings.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities are crediting a dog with alerting occupants of a Bismarck home that the house was on fire.

Firefighters responded to the blaze late Friday night.

Authorities say the occupants of the home were alerted of the fire by a pet dog.

The fire is estimated to have caused about $15,000 in damage.

The fire started in a garbage can where ashes from a fireplace were discarded.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Williston police are investigating a report of a homicide and want the public’s help locating a discarded mattress that may be evidence. Detective David Peterson says police received the report of a homicide Saturday but haven’t confirmed it or found a body. Peterson says the mattress may have been discarded along a roadway or ditch in the Minot area after being transported from Williston. Peterson asks that anyone who sees a mattress report it, but not touch it or disturb the area.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Xcel Energy says it’s lifting an appeal to residential customers in parts of North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin to conserve natural gas by turning down heat and avoiding the use of gas appliances. MLB…

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – At the end of last season, Jason Kubel came to Target Field with the Cleveland Indians. He was reminded of how much he missed playing in Minnesota. And now Kubel is back, a past-his-prime outfielder trying to regain his power-hitting form. He’s not the only former member of Gardenhire’s playoff teams who’ll be present in spring training next month, either. Shortstop Jason Bartlett was out of baseball last year, but he was also signed to a minor league contract.

FINAL FOUR…

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The nets could be cut down in Minnesota again. Minneapolis has made the list of finalists for the next round of Final Four bids. The NCAA announced Monday eight cities it’s considering as hosts for the semifinals and championship of the men’s basketball tournaments from 2017-2020. Also on the list: Atlanta, Indianapolis, New Orleans, the Dallas area, the Phoenix area, San Antonio and St. Louis. Final presentations from each location will be made to the NCAA in November. Winning bids will be announced later that month.

 T25 BASKETBALL-POLL

UNDATED (AP) – The new Associated Press men’s basketball poll is unchanged at the top from last week as both No. 1 Arizona and second-ranked Syracuse won their games. The Wildcats are 20-0 while the Orange check in at 19-0. This marks the eighth straight week they’ve topped the poll.

Arizona received 63 of the 64 first place votes with Syracuse getting the remaining nod.

Florida jumped from sixth to third while Wichita State, the other undefeated Division I team, moved up one spot to fourth. The fifth-ranked school this week is San Diego State.

The next five consists of Kansas, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Villanova and Michigan.

SUPER BOWL…

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – The weather forecast for the first Super Bowl in an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather city is not bad, considering the frigid weather than has lingered in the Northeast this winter. National Weather Service meteorologist Anthony Gigi is calling for temperatures to reach a high of 39 with a low of 27, which is average for the New York City area this time of year. There is little threat of precipitation.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – Part of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address tonight will underscore a willingness to act on his own. The White House says Obama will announce an executive order increasing the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 for new federal contracts. He also plans to identify measures where he and Congress can cooperate, as well as issues to differentiate Democrats from Republicans.

ATLANTA (AP) – Miserable weather is the order of the day from the Midwest, where arctic air is pushing wind chills well below zero, to the Southeast, which is bracing for an onslaught of snow and ice from a winter storm. Many flights have been canceled and schools have been closed in anticipation.

BEIJING (AP) – A U.S. diplomat says America is in frequent communication with North Korea about imprisoned American Kenneth Bae (bay), and that Washington is urging Pyongyang to release the captive. U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Glyn Davies says Bae is in poor health and needs to return home.

SOCHI, Russia (AP) – Russia is coming under international fire for restricting journalists’ efforts to cover preparations for the Olympics in Sochi next month. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists detailed in a report how Russian and international journalists have been harassed and prevented from covering sensitive stories such as the abuse of migrant workers and environmental issues.

BERLIN (AP) – Researchers say ancient DNA has provided a picture of a hunter-gatherer who lived in Europe some 7,000 years. They say he probably had blue eyes and dark skin, and that the unusual combination was found in DNA extracted from a tooth discovered in a cave in northern Spain. One researcher says that contradicts the stereotype that blue eye color always goes hand-in-hand with light skin. The findings are in the journal Nature.
