(AP) –James River Correctional Center Warden Don Redmann will serve as interim warden of the State Penitentiary.   The warden of the North Dakota State Penitentiary is quitting after managing the Bismarck prison for nearly four years. Robyn Schmalenberger’s last day on the job is Thursday. She submitted her resignation last Friday.

Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation director Leann Bertsch announced that Redmann will serve as interim wardent and help Bertsch identify potential candidates for the job.

Redmann also will fill the newly created position of director of facility operations, reporting directly to Bertsch and overseeing and supervising the wardens, she stated in the email.

Redmann has worked for the department for almost 30 years, including nearly 16 years as warden of the James River facility.
Schmalenberger has worked in corrections for more than 20 years. She began as a probation officer and was involved in the organization of Fargo Drug Court in 2002 and the development of re-entry programs in Bismarck and Fargo in 2003.

Schmalenberger was promoted to state director of transitional facilities in 2007. She took over for Tim Schuetzle (SHOOT’-zuhl) as warden in April 2010.
