There was no fire. The smoke coming from the garage area was from a wood burning stove.

Jamestown (CSi) Prairie Paws Rescue is still selling sponsorships for $100 for the “Raise the Woof Comedy Tour” . The sponsor will also get two tickets to the show.

On Monday’s (Feb 24, 2014) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, President and Co-Founder of Prairie Paws Rescue Kaye John said ticket sales are going well, and more sponsors are welcome.

Prairie Paws is raising money for a used vehicle to transport animals and equipment.

She says the vehicle is essential to animal rescues which is used it to get equipment and animals to meet and greet events, transporting animals to vet appointments, and picking up dogs from area pounds on death row to get them either to Prairie Paws or to other reliable havens.

She adds, the old van is a hazard to volunteers and pets as there is no heat, electrical doesn’t work with no ability to adjust seats, dome lights and most important no headlights for night time travel. The van is also used to bring animals to Meet and Greet Events around the area.

The standup comedy troup, “Raise the Woof Comedy Tour” will perform:

8 pm February 28, 2014

Gladstone Inn , Shady’s, Jamestown, ND

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m., for those 21 years of age, and older.

The comedy show only performs for shelter fundraising.

She pointed out that there will be three acts, with intermissions at which time there will be raffle drawings, plus there will be silent auctions.

She added that there will be a silent auction including tickets to the police departments upcoming Pam Tillis Concert in Jamestown. Other items include Theme Baskets, and a Ford clock donated by R.M. Stoudt.

Raffles will include WeFest Tickets, with entries from the $10 purchase of a Prairie Paws Rescue mug

Tickets are $10 each in advance from sponsors or $15 the day of the show, available at area veterinary clinics, R.M. Stoudt, Big Dog Country or from Prairie Paws Rescue volunteers.

Kaye also notes that CMA,ACM and Grammy Award winner and Country Artist Miranda Lambert’s MUTT NATION FOUNDATION…has donated $3000 to Prairie Paws for the help of defraying the cost. Lambert is a friend of Kaye John. The fundraiser goal is between $7,000 and $8,000 for the van.

Prairie Paws has monthly Meet and Greet events at Jamestown Tractor Supply company the 2nd Saturday of every month from 10am-2pm. She adds, the events have been a great way for people to come out and visit the pets.

Right now Prairie Paws has 32 pets in their foster home based rescue.

On line, visit

PrairiePawsRescue.com and view animals for adoption.

Other donations are welcome, at Post Office box 1114 in Jamestown 58402, and look for donation jars at various locations

Kaye also said that on November 1, 2014, Prairie Paws Rescue will again host the Paw-Sta-Paloosa, fundraiser, with more information later.

On another notes she pointed out that area veteranarian clinic are offering discounts and spaying or neutering pets.

This week the offer is being made by Country Acres in Jamestown.

Jamestown (CSi) The Anne Carlsen Center in Jamestown commemorated the completion of Annie’s House.

The 11,500 square-foot facility is at Bottineau Winter Park that helps people of all abilities enjoy skiing and other outdoor activities.

Mike Cerkowniak was hired by ACC to run the Annie’s House adaptive skills program. He said since the beginning of January, the facility has been busy every weekend with adaptive ski groups learning what the facility has to offer

Nelson died on Sept. 11, 2001, during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.

When her personal property from New York was returned to her parents, they found her laptop computer. The files contained “Annie’s 100,” a list of 36 items Nelson either wanted to be or to do. Included was “Buy a house in North Dakota.”

She started a list of things she wanted to be or do. She didn’t live to complete the list, but one of her dreams on the list has become a reality, and others with adaptive needs can use it to enjoy the outdoors.

On Monday afternoon, Nelson’s parents, Gary and Jenette Nelson, were at the Anne Carlsen Center in Jamestown for the commemoration.

For more information about Annie’s House, visit  www. skibwp.com/anniespage.htm .

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Police in Minot are investigating what they are calling a suspicious death over the weekend.

Authorities say a 44-year-old woman was found injured at an apartment early Sunday, and she died of her injuries at a hospital later in the day.

A 47-year-old man who also was in the apartment was arrested for violating a judicial order. Formal charges were not immediately filed against him. Court documents show that the man pleaded guilty to simple assault-domestic violence charges twice last year.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A former camp counselor has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in a Grand Forks hotel two years ago.

A jury in late October convicted 28-year-old Sean Kovalevich of gross sexual imposition and corruption of a minor.  Judge Sonja Clapp sentenced him on Monday.

Authorities say Kovalevich met the girl at a church camp near Belcourt on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation. He was arrested in late 2012, after he started teaching science at the high school in Starkweather.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A woman who has been in prison for 14 months since she was arrested for threatening children and others on the Minot Air Force Base has been sentenced to time served.

Tiffany Anderson, of Lompoc, Calif., pleaded guilty in November to three counts, including communicating a threat to destroy property by explosive. Authorities say Anderson called a bomb threat into the base on November 2012.

Anderson is also accused of calling the early child Head Start program on the base in December 2012 and threatening to shoot children.

Prosecutors say Anderson admitted to making the threats in an attempt to cause trouble for her former boyfriend, who was an airman stationed at the base.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot-area authorities arrested three people and confiscated a large amount of methamphetamine after a reported burglary that involved gunshots.

The Ward County Sheriff’s Department says a Minot resident early Sunday reported that his residence had been burglarized by people who had fired shots at him, and that he had returned fire.

Deputies a short time later stopped a vehicle for speeding and determined the people inside were tied to the burglary. The deputies also seized nearly 1 pound of meth worth nearly $100,000 on the street.

Three men from the Minot and Balfour areas were arrested on drug and weapons charges. Formal charges were not immediately filed.

CARSON, N.D. (AP) – A judge has officially dismissed one of the seven felony terrorizing charges filed against a white supremacist who unsuccessfully tried to take over a small North Dakota town.

Judge David Reich signed the order on Friday, meeting the request of Grant County State’s Attorney Todd Schwarz. Schwarz earlier had asked for the count against 62-year-old Craig Cobb to be dropped, saying the evidence didn’t justify it.

Cobb still could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted on the other six counts. He’s scheduled for trial in mid-July.

Cobb moved to the town of Leith about two years ago and attempted to turn it into an all-white enclave. He’s accused of terrorizing residents with guns in mid-November. He has pleaded not guilty.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – One of the five North Dakota snowmobilers who spent two frigid nights in northern Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains after becoming lost in a storm says he ate snow to stay hydrated and prayed that he would survive.

The group was found safe Saturday afternoon after not being seen for two days. The snowmobilers are now back home in central North Dakota’s McLean County.

Rod Schilling, Dustin Schlichting, James Murray, Jaren Murray and Chad Tweeten lost their way when a snowstorm hit while they were riding Thursday. Tweeten became separated from the others and spent two nights alone enduring what he called “savage” winds. He said he was determined not to die.

Rescuers eventually found the men safe. Tweeten says he “can’t say enough” about their efforts.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Health Department says cases of sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in the state.

The number of confirmed syphilis cases has risen from 15 to 24 since 2012, and the number of gonorrhea cases has climbed from 340 to 471 in the same time period.

Lindsey VanderBusch with the Health Department’s Division of Disease Control says state officials are trying to raise awareness not only among the public but among doctors. The department is contacting physicians throughout the state to remind them to be on the lookout for STD symptoms when they see patients.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (HYT’-kamp) says Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy has agreed to visit North Dakota. Heitkamp says McCarthy will join her in the Bismarck area on Friday to talk about such topics as coal and ethanol. Heitkamp says it’s an opportunity for North Dakotans to have their voices heard on EPA policies and proposals impacting the state.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Some Democratic lawmakers want Governor Jack Dalrymple (DAHL’-rimp-ul) to call a special session of the Legislature to address problems tied to western North Dakota’s oil boom. The lawmakers contended in a letter to Dalrymple on Monday that development problems can’t wait for the start of the 2015 Legislature in January.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Public Service Commission says it recently fined four companies for damages to gas lines and an electric cable that occurred during excavation projects in Mandan and Minot. Officials say the $1,000 and $2,000 fines highlight the importance of the state’s “Call Before You Dig” law. Residents and contractors can contact one-call by calling 1-800-795-0555.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Governors are quoting President Barack Obama as saying he expects to decide on the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline in the next couple of months.

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, a Republican who supports the pipeline, said Obama was asked about Keystone Monday at a White House meeting with about 40 governors. Heineman and Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin said Obama told governors he expects a decision “in the next couple of months,” but didn’t offer a specific timetable. Fallin, a Republican who chairs the National Governors Association, also supports Keystone.

A White House spokesman said he would not provide details of a private discussion with governors, and said review of the Canada-to-Texas pipeline remains at the State Department.

A Nebraska judge struck down the route through that state last week.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gov. Jack Dalrymple has proclaimed this week as Snowplow Operator Week in North Dakota.

Dalrymple says it’s being done to recognize the efforts made by snowplow drivers to keep roads maintained and safe for travel.

State Transportation Department Director Grant Levi says the state employs about 355 snowplow drivers.

Hundreds more snowplow operators work for cities and counties.

Officials say drivers work hard to clear North Dakota’s roads but they also serve as the state’s “eyes and ears” in reporting winter conditions.

In sports…

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Former North Dakota State University national champion and 2012 London Olympian Amanda Smock has claimed her third consecutive indoor national title in the triple jump.  NBA…

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love is the NBA’s Western Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season. Love scored 42 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Wolves to a 104-91 win over Indiana on Wednesday. He followed that performance with the first triple-double of his career three days later at Utah, scoring 37 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and handing out a career-high 10 assists as Minnesota beat the Jazz 121-104.

NEW YORK (AP) – The New York Knicks have bought out the contracts of Metta World Peace and Beno Udrih (BAY’-noh OO’-drihk), allowing them to sign with other teams and qualify for the playoffs.

World Peace finally got his wish to play for the Knicks when he signed last summer, but the native New Yorker and former St. John’s player never gained a place in Mike Woodson’s rotation and appeared in just 29 games before asking for his release.

COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL…

UNDATED (AP) – Florida is the new No. 1 team in The Associated Press men’s basketball poll after the 25-2 Gators collected 47 of 65 first-place votes. Unbeaten and second-ranked Wichita State received 14 first-place votes, and third-ranked Arizona got the remaining four.  Syracuse tumbled to No. 4 after suffering its first two losses of the season, and Kansas, Duke, Louisville, Villanova, Creighton and Saint Louis fill out the top 10.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Jim Boeheim’s (BAY’-hymz) on-court tirade that got him ejected late in Syracuse’s loss to Duke Saturday won’t draw any further action.  ACC commissioner John Swofford says he agreed with Boeheim’s ejection but the Orange coach won’t be disclipined further. Swofford wouldn’t say if official Tony Greene made the right call when he whistled Syracuse’s C.J. Fair for charging with 10.4 seconds left, leading to Boeheim’s brief fit of rage.

MLB…

NEW YORK (AP) – Major League Baseball and its players have adopted a rule limiting home plate collisions this season, although the one-year rule experiment allows collisions if the catcher has the ball and is blocking the runner’s direct path to home plate, and if the catcher goes into the base path to field a throw to the plate. The rule bans players from deviating from a direct path to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher or other player covering home plate. A runner violating the rule will be out, even if the fielder drops the ball.

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) – The Baltimore Orioles have finalized an $8 million, one-year contract with slugger Nelson Cruz, who hit .266 with 27 homers and 76 RBIs in 109 games for Texas last season. The 33-year-old Cruz served a 50-game suspension last year for violating baseball’s drug agreement. He turned down a $14.1 million qualifying offer from the Texas Rangers in November.

OLYMPICS-HOCKEY…

SOCHI, Russia (AP) – The end may be in sight for NHL players competing in the Olympics. It all began in 1998 when, for the first time, players from the world’s top professional league took part in the Winter Olympics. For several years, the NHL has been thinking seriously about abandoning the Olympics because several owners are upset at seeing their multimillion-dollar investments playing for free, and sometimes getting injured, while their arenas sit empty for three weeks in February.

The league and players’ union are working to stage a hockey World Cup in 2015, possibly lessening the impact. From all indications, however, most players believe nothing can replace the Olympics.

In world and national news…

YOLA, Nigeria (AP) – A predawn attack has killed dozens of students and witnesses say some victims were burned alive at a northeast Nigerian college. Suspected Islamic militants set ablaze a locked hostel, shooting and slitting the throats of those who escaped through windows. Some were burned alive. Adamu Garba said he and other teachers estimate 40 students died.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) – Ukraine is being urged to plan a reform program so the European Union and other Western nations can give proper consideration to financial aid for the country also beset by a leadership crisis after months of protest. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian parliament has delayed the formation of a new government, probably until Thursday.

WASHINGTON (AP) – House Republicans are about to promote what they say is major tax overhaul. An aide says the plan would lower the top income tax rate from 39.6 percent to 25 percent. It would impose a new 10 percent surtax on some earned income above about $450,000 but the surtax would not apply to capital gains or dividends. That would spare many of the superrich who make the bulk of their money from investments.

UNDATED (AP) – An experiment in centralization in the Midwest is allowing organ donors to be brought to surgeons instead of the other way around, and a study out today finds the process is encouraging. It saves money and surgeons feel they may be getting a better quality organ for the recipient. Other regions are taking a close look at the system.

BEIJING (AP) – One doesn’t usually see heads of state hanging out in alleys but that’s where China’s president turned up today despite heavy air pollution. President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng) made an unannounced visit to a traditional alleyway popular with tourists and fashionable youth and sat with residents in his latest effort to be seen as a man of the people. Such visits are extremely rare and Xi’s appearance was likely stage-managed to some degree.
