BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Police say a dog was found dead hanging by its leash from a doorknob at a North Dakota apartment.
Bismarck Police Officer Pat Renz says a 24-year-old Bismarck woman contacted police when she returned to her apartment and found her small, black dog hanging by its leash from the doorknob on a closet door.
Renz says the woman usually left the dog tied by the handle of its leash to the closet door when she wasn’t at the apartment. The woman told police the animal had never tangled up.
The responding officer reported that it appeared someone had manually wrapped the leash around the doorknob. The handle of the leash was found unhooked.
The officer didn’t find signs of forced entry to the apartment or footprints in the snow.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – People who contracted hepatitis C in Minot last year are suing the nursing home linked to the illness.
Seventy-eight-year-old John Fenner and 84-year-old Lilas Guttormson are seeking unspecified damages from ManorCare Health Services. The plaintiffs’ attorneys also are seeking to make the lawsuit class action. If a judge approves, it would cover all 44 people infected with the virus that can cause serious liver damage and even death.
The state Health Department’s preliminary report on the outbreak says neither the state nor the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could pinpoint how the patients became infected. Plaintiff’s attorney Mike Miller contends the nursing home was still negligent in its care of patients.
A spokeswoman for ManorCare did not immediately comment, saying attorneys were still reviewing the lawsuit.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota attorney general’s office has fined an Atlanta-based company for making illegal automated calls to residents on behalf of the state Farm Bureau.
The office on Wednesday fined Concentric Direct LLC $500 for making robo-calls asking residents who they support to lead the state Department of Agriculture as commissioner.
Parrell Grossman from the attorney general’s fraud division says robo-calls are illegal whether they’re political in nature or not.
Grossman says he contacted the company after talking with the Farm Bureau. He says the company was unaware of North Dakota’s law and agreed to stop making calls.
Pete Hanebutt with Farm Bureau says Concentric Direct had assured the organization it would do things properly. Farm Bureau won’t be fined.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – An India-based technology company says it’s expanding its operations in Fargo.
Tech Mahindra set up shop in North Dakota two years ago in a partnership with Cargill’s global business services center. It provides services such as information technology purchasing and invoice processing.
The combined operation currently has 170 employees.
A Tech Mahindra spokesman says the company plans to add 100 more jobs in Fargo in the next year. About a quarter of those positions will be filled by college graduates in the area.
Tech Mahindra is a $3 billion company that earns 48 percent of its revenue from North America.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) – Attorneys for a serial killer are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to halt his execution until the state of Texas releases information about who supplied its new lethal injection drugs. Tommy Sells is set to die Thursday evening with a recently obtained supply of pentobarbital. Texas prison officials say the pharmacy that supplied the drug needs to be kept secret to protect it from threats of violence. Attorneys for Sells say they need to be allowed to examine the drug to verify its quality and protect Sells from unconstitutional pain.
FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) – According to the Army’s top civilian official, the soldier who shot and killed three people and then himself at Fort Hood in Texas Wednesday had “a clean record in terms of his behavior.” Investigators today have been questioning witnesses, trying to find out whether there may have been a fight or an argument that sparked the attack. They’ve also been searching the soldier’s home, and interviewing his wife.
EVERETT, Wash. (AP) – There’s a mystery facing medical examiners in Washington state, trying to identify the victims of the mudslide that wiped out a small community. One of the 30 bodies that have been found does not fit any of the descriptions on the missing persons list. Officials say the only clue to the man’s identity might be his gold molars. Authorities believe he may have been someone who was on the highway, or going for a hike. The list of missing people now has 15 names on it.
