Jamestown (CSi) With warmer weather right around the corner, the potential for severe summer weather will soon intensify. Because of that, the National Weather Service has scheduled a SKYWARN Weather Spotter Training Class on Tuesday, April 8th, 7:00 p.m., in the lower level of the Law Enforcement Center in Jamestown.

The class will be conducted by a staff meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Bismarck. The class, which lasts about two hours, will focus on recognizing and understanding the different types of severe summer weather such as thunderstorms, down-burst winds, flash floods, hail, and tornadoes. Due to federal budget reductions, the last time this class was held in Jamestown was May of 2011.

The class is free and open to all organizations and individuals who want to become more familiar with how to identify severe summer weather. No registration is required. Attending this class does not require an individual to become an official National Weather Service weather spotter. Feel free to invite any others that may want to attend.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – One man has pleaded guilty and three other people have been charged in connection with the stabbing death of a man in a Fargo parking lot last month.

Nineteen-year-old Wade Garrett pleaded guilty Friday to felony murder in the March 14 death of 26-year-old Rolandas House, whose body was discovered near a grocery store. Police say Garrett stabbed House multiple times.

Prosecutors also announced Friday that 46-year-old Arlen Clapper and his children, 19-year-old Alexander Clapper and 22-year-old Tamara Clapper, have been charged with felony murder. Alexander Clapper is also charged with delivery of marijuana.

Court documents allege that House had stolen money and marijuana from Garrett. Police would give no further details on the robbery.

The Clappers, who live in Moorhead, Minn., were arrested Thursday night in Valley City.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Houston man who worked for a company that sold the chemicals that led to the synthetic drug deaths of two teens in the Grand Forks area has pleaded guilty.

Twenty-six-year-old John Polinksi is one of 15 people charged in an investigation known as “Operation Stolen Youth.” He is the last person to be convicted in the case.

Polinski pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance. He faces 20 years in prison.

Authorities say Polinski handled information technology and other business operations for Motion Resources LLC, which sold chemicals over the Internet. Company owner Charles Carlton pleaded guilty last month.

Authorities say the drugs caused the June 2012 deaths of 18-year-old Christian Bjerk, of Grand Forks, and 17-year-old Elijah Stai, of Park Rapids, Minn.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A federal judge will hear arguments Friday in a legal challenge to a North Dakota law that bans abortions when a fetal heartbeat is detected – as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland granted a temporary injunction last July that blocked the law from taking effect in August.

The New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights is representing Fargo’s Red River Women’s Clinic. The center filed the lawsuit after the law was passed last year by the North Dakota Legislature. The law outlaws abortions as early as six weeks into pregnancy and before some women even know they are pregnant.

A spokeswoman for the center says a ruling from the bench is unlikely Friday, but that one could come in a couple of weeks.

MEDORA, N.D. (AP) – Crews plan to begin making emergency road repairs in the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Officials say that several wet years have resulted in a small but substantial road failure and continued erosion of a major slope onto the roadway on the north unit’s scenic drive. Repairs will include excavating the entire width of the road above the closure gate at the Caprock Coulee parking area and rebuilding the embankment slope.

Superintendent Valerie Naylor says the scenic drive is always a challenge to maintain because of the unstable badlands soils.

The drive will be closed at the Caprock Coulee parking area while repairs are in progress. Repairs may be delayed because of weather conditions, but are expected to be completed by May 15.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state GOP chairman says North Dakota Republicans should not be content with wielding supermajority control in the Legislature and having a more than two decade-long stranglehold on top elected offices.

Robert Harms says that will be among the messages to GOP delegates at their convention this weekend at the State Fairgrounds in Minot, where more than 1,000 delegates are expected to attend.

Delegates are slated to endorse candidates for U.S. House, tax commissioner, two public service commission seats, secretary of state, attorney general and agriculture commissioner. Only the race for state agriculture commissioner has a contest.

The convention formally opens Saturday and is scheduled to run through noon Sunday.

National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, along with Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt impersonators, are slated to address delegates on Saturday.

In world and national news…

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) – The father of Ivan (ee-VAHN’) Lopez says he’s struggling to comprehend how his son could have opened fire on fellow soldiers at Fort Hood in Texas. In a statement from his native Puerto Rico, the elder Lopez calls for prayers for the three people killed and 16 wounded in Wednesday’s attack. His brief statement today was his first since the shooting at the Army base where his son was stationed. The motive remains unknown. Officials have said Lopez was being treated for depression and anxiety and was involved in a verbal dispute just before the shooting.

CINCINNATI (AP) – Ohio is going to have to recognize same-sex marriages that are performed legally in other states. A federal judge says he’s planning to strike down part of the gay marriage ban approved by Ohio voters. But the ruling won’t mean that Ohio has to allow gay couples to marry in the state.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The unemployment report for March is a mixed bag. Employers added 192,000 jobs last month, slightly below the revised February level. But higher-paying positions didn’t fare as well as lower ones. And manufacturers cut 1,000 jobs, the first such drop since July.

CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago transit officials have fired a train operator who acknowledged dozing off before crashing a commuter train at the O’Hare International Airport station. The March 24 crash injured more than 30 passengers and sent the eight-car train barreling up an escalator leading into the airport. A federal investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board said last week that the operator told him she dozed off before the crash and had done so on another occasion in February when she overshot a station platform.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) – A judge in South Carolina has sentenced a woman to 20 years in prison for killing her 6-week-old daughter with what prosecutors say was an overdose of morphine in her breast milk. A prosecutor says Stephanie Greene was a nurse who knew the dangers of taking painkillers while pregnant and breast feeding. They say she hid her pregnancy from doctors so she could keep getting her prescriptions. Her lawyer says she was only trying to ease debilitating pain from a car crash.
