Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Police reports, three individuals were arrested Tuesday night following a domestic dispute, at 519 3rd Street Southwest, about 7:10-p.m.

Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger says the incident involved a stabbing, and remains under investigation.

18 year old Benjamin Chopper, received a knife wound and was treated and released at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

He was also taken into custody on suspicion of simple assault, domestic.

Edinger said 19 year old Gloria Cruz, was taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated assault, domestic.

23 year old Paris Chopper,was taken into custody on suspicion of burglary with injury. Cruz and Paris Chopper remain in custody Wednesday, at the Stutsman County Correctional Center.

Formal charges are pending against all three, with the incident under review by the city attorney and Stutsman County State’s Attorney Office.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Fire Department was called to a single family residence just before 5-p.m. Wednesday at 915 5th Avenue, Southeast.

Deputy City Fire Chief, Jerry Kainz says the fire started in the kitchen, and the rest of the home was extensively damaged by heat and smoke.

Following extinguishing the fire, the house was ventilated of the smoke.

No injuries were reported, with five city fire units and 33 fire fighters in the scene about 45 minutes.

The cause of the fire is unser investigation.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown High School Drama troupe will present the play,

Fighting Demons by Angela Hill, of North Dakota, April 14th 2014 at 7:30 in the high school theatre.

She was the resident choreographer for the Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre and has worked choreographing everything from fashion shows to swing choirs to high school musicals to local productions to world ranked martial art forms. Her goal is to always provide a challenge for the students who perform her material.

On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, cast members Christanna Eckstein, Tyler Newton, and Sierra Gordon joined us to talk about their characters, and a bit about the plot.

In this production ten teenagers find themselves trapped and fighting their inner demons. Cindy play by( Morgan Baumgartner) is hiding a tragic secret, Milly (Kelsey Becker), is fighting OCD, and Cyrus (Nick Mortenson) is fighting drug addiction. Alice (Mikayla Patel) and Lilah (Emily Lauinger) are fighting bulimia and cancer, Tabitha (Libby Kruse) has an abusive boyfriend while Arnold (Jacob Brownell) is dealing with abuse from bullies. Willow (Elise Opp) is struggling with her parents divorce, and Jezz (Julia Breidenbach) is struggling with thoughts of suicide while Eli (Hunter Carpenter)is trying to save everyone in a desperate attempt to redeem himself.

Trying hard to keep them down are their inner demons played by Zach Mikula, Sierra Gordon, Tyler Newton, Seok Woon Hong aka John, and Jennifer Allmer. Add one angel like character Grace, Eli’s dead sister played by Christanna Eckstein and it’s a challenging ensemble play that allows the actors to show what caused their inner demons and gives the audience a glimpse at the struggle these demons can present when trying to overcome their hold on each character.

Also working on this production are Jonah Finocchiaro as stage manager, Bekka Nitschke , Madora Pringle, as set crew. Hannah Kapp and Elizabeth Fremgen are doing the lights while Tiffany Olsen is doing sound. Miss Jessica Sharp is in charge of costumes for this production.

The play is directed by Jay Nitchke her last production before she retires.

Ticket prices are $6:00 for adults and $4:00 for students and children. School passes will be also be honored.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The upcoming Heroes Dinner, on April 11, 2014, is an opportunity for the Red Cross to recognize volunteers that go over and above in their service to our community.

On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Buffalo Valley Red Cross Chapter, Executive Director, Beth Dewald said, the event is also an opportunity for the chapter to raise funds to support the services we provide such as assisting a family after a fire with food, clothing, shelter and recruiting and training extraordinary volunteers to serve twenty-four hours a day. This fundraising event is the largest event of the year.

She said the Red Cross provides community disaster education to help people prepare for disasters.

Jamestown (CSi) A Red Cross project in conjunction with the APP Store, allows users of Smart Phones, I-Phones, and I-Pads to access weather information, and emergency planning preparation, and messaging after a disaster.

Buffalo Valley Chapter Executive, Beth Dewald says the free APPS are available through the APP Store, or the Red Cross.

Accessible information includes tornado warnings, weather radio, and information concerning severe weather events, including tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes.

Another available feature is “I’m Safe,” where an individual may send messages via Twitter, or E-Mail to others indicating their safety, and location following a disaster.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown downtown flower baskets location is expanding this year, and will include hanging 114 baskets on 57 polls, along First Avenue, and 10th Street Southeast.

The baskets will cost about $11,000 this year to purchase and keep maintained through the summer. Additional donations of dollars are needed, as about half that amount has been raised so far. The flower cost is expected to be $4,275, and the watering depending on summer rainfall amounts may cost about $6,600.

The flower baskets are a cooperative effort between the Jamestown Downtown Association the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce’s City Beautification Committee, and the City of Jamestown, which provides watering equipment at no cost, and stores the flower pots.

Individuals and businesses have the option of adopting a pole, each with two baskets of flowers for $150, and smaller donations are also appreciated.,

Donations for the flower baskets can be sent to the Jamestown Downtown Association at Box 1026, Jamestown, ND, 58402.

Jamestown (CSi) The Stutsman County Courthouse will have absentee voting ballots available starting May 1, 2014.

Meanwhile, Early Voting starts May 27 through June 9, 2014, Monday through Saturday at the Stutsman County Courthouse, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

On June 10, 2014, the Jamestown Civic Center will be the election center, with rural precinct 1 polling at Pingree, rural precinct 2 voting at Kensal and rural precinct 5 voting at Medina.

 

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a 5-year-old girl inside a van that was stolen in Grand Forks was found unharmed.
 
     Police were notified shortly after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday that the van had been taken from a grocery store parking lot.  Authorities found the vehicle a short time later, and the girl was found nearby.
 
     Police Lt. Mike Ferguson says the child was checked by medical personnel and appeared to be physically fine.
 
     The incident prompted a brief lockdown at three nearby schools. Superintendent Larry Nybladh says the lockdown was in place about 40 minutes.
 
     Police are searching for a male they consider a person of interest in the case.

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Minot man says he was just being a good neighbor when he sprang into action to help a woman being attacked by a pit bull.
 
Jay Hight says he was in his garage when he heard the woman screaming. The dog had clamped its jaws onto her arm.
 
     Hight says he grabbed a bat and started whacking the dog so that it would free the woman. He says the dog let go of the woman, but began attacking her dog.
 
     The station reports Hight and other neighbors struggled with the pit bull until it freed the woman’s dog.
 
     The Minot woman was not identified.
 
     Police say the dog’s owner will be cited for violating Minot’s ban on pit bull breeds.

 

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Authorities arrested a Devils Lake man on multiple charges following an hour-long high-speed chase in the area.
 
     The  Tuesday morning chase reached speeds of 115 mph, and that about $2,600 dollars in damage was done to the vehicle the 33-year-old suspect had borrowed from a friend and was driving.
 
     The pursuit began in Devils Lake and ended near Crary when the man traveled down a dead-end road. The suspect told police he fled because he had outstanding warrants.
 
     The man was arrested on charges including fleeing, driving under the influence and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Court documents did not immediately list formal charges.

 

 MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – The attorney for a Mandan man accused of shooting another man to death early this year wants more time to prepare for a preliminary hearing.
 
     The Bismarck Tribune reports that the court-appointed attorney for 25-year-old James McKinney on Tuesday filed a motion asking the judge to grant him more time to review the case.
 
     The judge hasn’t ruled on the motion.
 
     McKinney has been charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence. He hasn’t entered a plea.
 
     McKinney is charged in the death of Alex Lansdon, who was found dead January 27th at the mobile home he rented in southeast Mandan. Preliminary autopsy results indicate he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
 
     Another man faces terrorizing, weapons and tampering charges in the case.
 
     McKinney is in custody on $250,000 bond.

 

GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) – Several roads in Walsh County in northeast North Dakota are under water because of melting snow and ice jams.
 
     Brent Nelson is the county’s emergency manager. He says sandbags have been delivered to a number of homes as a precaution. 
 
     The  National Weather Service has issued a flood warning in the area.
 
     Nelson says about a dozen sites are currently closed. He says two of them are on a county road near Forest River and another one near the Fordville-Lankin area. Others closures are in township roads and minimum maintenance roads.
 
 Some of the locations that could experience flooding include Grafton, Minto, Park River and Ardoch.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Army Corps of Engineers says there’s plenty of room in upper Missouri River reservoirs to handle spring runoff.
 
     But some groups are urging the corps to step up dam releases sooner rather than later, to guard against devastating flooding like the region experienced three years ago.
 
     The corps is holding a series of public meetings in Missouri River states on its plans for managing the river this year. Meetings were held in Bismarck, N.D., and Pierre, S.D., on Wednesday.
 
     Officials forecast runoff at 32 million acre feet – 27 percent above average but well below the 61 million acre feet recorded in 2011. Available storage in river reservoirs is about 53 million acre feet.
 
     Still, Bruce Engelhardt with the North Dakota Water Commission says “constant vigilance must be maintained.”

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Last week’s spring blizzard that dumped up to 20 inches of snow in parts of North Dakota will delay spring planting. The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop and weather report that farmers on average now intend to start fieldwork by April 26th – later than the typical mid-April start.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The operator of an oil and gas well in McKenzie County says crews have contained and recovered the more than 1,000 barrels of fluids that spilled from a tank.
 
     The North Dakota Oil and Gas Division on Wednesday said an unexpected increase in well pressure caused a tank to overflow and release approximately 650 barrels of oil and 450 barrels of brine.
 
     Houston-based Oasis Petroleum Inc. operates the well located about 4 miles southwest of Alexander. The company on Tuesday reported to the state that the fluids had been contained.
 
     An official says a state inspector has been to the site.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota is getting a $3.3 million federal grant for coal mine reclamation projects.
 
     The money is going to the North Dakota Public Service Commission, which has identified three projects that need reclamation in western North Dakota.
 
     One of the major projects is to remove a 3,500-foot long, 80-foot wall that was created through surface mining near Hazen.
 
     The federal funds for the abandoned mine lands reclamation program comes from a reclamation fee that is paid by active mining companies on each ton of coal.
 
     Since 1981, more than 130 major abandoned mine reclamation projects and numerous sinkhole filling and maintenance projects have been done in North Dakota at a cost of nearly $45 million.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Dakota Digital Film Festival has announced the names of the short films that will be screened at its April 25 event in Bismarck.
 
     The annual festival will feature films by directors from around the world. Three films by North Dakota directors will be featured.
 
     “This is Our Country” by Bismarck’s Dave Diebel and Carson Nordgaard looks at how the oil boom has affected the oil patch in the state’s northwest. “Codex” by Minot director Micah Bloom and “N00B Insurance” by Tim Rodenberger of Bismarck are the state’s other offerings.
 
     The festival will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 25 at Bismarck’s Belle Mehus Auditorium.

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team is taking to the ice, just one win away from another appearance in the national championship game.
 
     UND plays Minnesota on Thursday night in the NCAA Frozen Four semifinals at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The winner moves on to the title game Saturday night against either Boston College or Union.
 
     North Dakota has won seven previous national hockey championships but none since 2000.

 GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The Gamma Phi Beta Sorority has issued an apology on behalf of the chapter at the University of North Dakota after an incident involving a banner referencing the school’s retired nickname.
 
     The  banner hung outside the sorority house on the UND campus read, “you can take away our mascot but you can’t take away our pride.” It was displayed as the UND men’s hockey team prepares to play a semifinal game Thursday in the NCAA Frozen Four in Philadelphia, and has since been taken down.
 
     UND has retired its “Fighting Sioux” nickname and Indian-head moniker because many people and the NCAA deemed it offensive.
 
   Gamma Phi Beta says in a statement that it will provide sensitivity training for the UND chapter and might impose sanctions.ta Petroleum Council has hired a Bismarck consulting firm to help wildlife chapters apply for state grants.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Petroleum Council has hired a Bismarck consulting firm to help wildlife chapters apply for state grants.
 
     The council announced Wednesday that it’s hired Habitat Unlimited. The firm will help wildlife chapters apply for grants from the Outdoor Heritage Fund. The Heritage Fund receives funding from oil and gas taxes.
 
     The Petroleum Council says the firm will help local organizations write grants and develop projects so they can receive funding.
 
     The deadline to apply for grants this year is August 1.

  UNDATED (AP) – The Indiana Pacers and Miami Heat have swapped places atop the NBA’s Eastern Conference.
 
     The Pacers now have a half-game lead after Chris Copeland’s driving layup with 1.2 seconds remaining gave them a 104-102 victory at Milwaukee.  
     LeBron James poured in 37 points, but the Heat absorbed a 107-102 loss against a Memphis team that’s trying to keep its postseason hopes alive. Zach Randolph had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Marc Gasol (gah-SAHL’) added 20 points and 14 rebounds to help the Grizzlies stay one game behind Phoenix for the last Western Conference playoff seed.

 UNDATED (AP) – Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton will be out 6 to 8 weeks after tearing a ligament in his left thumb during last night’s game against Seattle. The 2010 AL MVP was injured during a headfirst slide into first base in the seventh inning. Hamilton was placed on the disabled list and could require surgery.

CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane says he will rejoin the team for the NHL playoffs next week, despite wearing a brace on his injured left knee. Kane was hurt in a game on March 19 and went to the sidelines as the team’s leading scorer.

     The Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak has agreed to a multiyear contract extension. He had one year left on his current contract.
 
     The Lakers’ latest defeat was their 53rd of the season, matching the franchise record set in 1958.
 
     Kupchak has been in the Lakers’ front office since 1986 and took charge of the basketball operations when Jerry West departed in 2000.

 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Vikings won’t have to wait long to break in TCF Bank Stadium. The Vikings open the preseason at home against Oakland this season. Home now means the University of Minnesota’s outdoor stadium after the Metrodome was dismantled over the winter. The Vikings will play the next two seasons at TCF.

PERTH, Australia (AP) – An Australian aircraft has detected what could be the fifth underwater signal heard during the month-long search for a missing Malaysian Airlines jet. The aircraft was searching the same part of the Indian Ocean where earlier sounds were detected that are consistent with an aircraft’s black boxes. The Australian navy P-3 Orion, has been dropping sound-locating buoys into the water.
 
     WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) – The Florida Highway Patrol is confirming that the driver of an SUV that fled the scene after a car crashed into a day care center is a man with a long history of arrests. The agency had previously called 26-year-old Robert Corchado a “person of interest.” Corchado has been arrested eight times since 2000. One girl died in Wednesday’s crash.
 
     DENVER (AP) – A three-judge federal appeals court begins hearing arguments today on whether they should uphold separate rulings by two federal judges that threw out same-sex marriage bans in Utah and Oklahoma. For supporters of same-sex marriage, the long-term goal is a Supreme Court decision in their favor. But they must convince the appellate courts first, starting today in Denver.
 
     WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) – This service academy challenge doesn’t involve finely conditioned athletes, pads or balls, but there’s no lack of intensity as cadets fight back against an onslaught of computer enemies. The annual Cyber Defense Exercise running through today will determine which of the five service academies can create computer networks that can best withstand threats cooked up by experts at the National Security Agency.
 
     ATHENS, Greece (AP) – After years of painful austerity and bailouts from the rest of the European Union, there’s some reward today for Greece. Officials are hailing the country’s first bond sale in four years as an overwhelming success, with the auction more than eight times oversubscribed and garnering a lower interest rate than expected.
