BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Belcourt man who was a member of the
town’s Rural Fire Department has been sentenced for arson.
Thirty-seven-year-old Joseph Morin was accused of trying to burn
down his former residence where his wife and children lived.
U.S. Attorney Timothy Purdon says Morin pleaded guilty in the
February incident and was sentenced to three years and 10 months in
prison, to be followed by two years of supervised release.
LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) – Police say a man they suspect of
involvement in a 2011 shooting in north-central Idaho has been
arrested in North Dakota.
The Lewiston Tribune reports 41-year-old Steven R. Francis was
arrested in Tioga, North Dakota earlier this week and is awaiting
extradition to Idaho, where he is charged with three counts of
attempted second-degree murder.
The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office says they believe Francis was
involved in a shootout that happened after several men stormed a
Kamiah home in an apparent attempt to collect a debt.
Three people were treated at an area hospital after the shooting, but there were no fatalities.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Longtime Burleigh County Clerk of Court
Deb Simenson during her career has sent jury duty summons to her
husband and two sons. Now, she can add her own name to that list.
Simenson uses a computer program to randomly select names from
lists of voters and people with driver’s licenses.
The program prints out summonses, and a machine puts them into an envelope.
Simenson says she got one of the envelopes in her personal mail on Aug. 25.
The clerk’s office also keeps files for court cases.
Simenson says she went out of her way to not look at files in the case for
which she had called herself.
She ended up not having to serve anyway – the case was settled without a trial.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The city of Minot is seeking nearly $23
million from the federal Economic Development Administration to
help upgrade the city’s aging downtown infrastructure.
The city’s request asks for help in upgrading water mains, storm
sewers, sanitary sewers and paving within 25 blocks.
Added money from the city and a developer would make it a $30 million project to improve systems that are nearly a century old.
Mayor Curt Zimbelman, City Manager David Waind and other local
and state officials traveled to Denver this week to make the
request. EDA officials did not immediately decide.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Police-operated surveillance cameras are
going online in part of downtown Fargo.
Some people in North Dakota’s largest city have raised privacy
concerns, but police say crime in the area is on the rise and the
department can’t afford to put more officers out on patrol.
Lt. Jeff Skuza says businesses in the area asked for the help
after a rash of vandalism and thefts.
The cameras will record video and feed it to the police station 24 hours a day. The equipment and installation cost about $9,000.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Two North Dakota cowboys are being
inducted into the national Rodeo Hall of Fame.
Pete Fredericks of Twin Buttes and Brad Gjermundson
(JUR’-muhnd-suhn) of Marshall will be honored during ceremonies
Friday and Saturday in Oklahoma City.

the Rodeo Historical Society of the National Cowboy and Western
Heritage Museum.
In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) – Mitt Romney and his wife are releasing their 2011 tax returns — and it turns out they paid just under $2 million in federal income taxes on income of $13.7 million — most of it from investments.
Their effective tax rate was 14.1 percent — just slightly above the 13.9 percent rate the couple paid for 2010.
Romney had earlier released his 2010 returns and an estimate for last year, but he has declined to reveal his returns from previous years.
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) – There have been violent demonstrations and clashes between protesters and police in cities across Pakistan today.
It’s a day that Pakistan’s government had declared as a holiday, to allow for what officials said should be peaceful protests over the anti-Islamic film produced in the United States that has led to Muslim anger and violence around the world.
In Karachi, police say armed demonstrators in a crowd of 15,000 fired on police, and burned two movie theaters and a bank.
Twelve people were killed in Karachi, and at least 17 in Pakistan overall.
WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S.-Pakistan relationship is facing new strains amid the massive, violent anti-American protests in several Pakistani cities.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met today with Pakistan’s foreign minister, who avoided an invitation to explicitly condemn the violence.
Instead, the Pakistani focused her comments entirely on the film, and thanked Clinton for speaking out against it — saying it sent a “strong message” that should help end the violence.
PITTSBURGH (AP) – A hostage standoff in a Pittsburgh high-rise office building is over — but not before the suspect used Facebook to provide updates during the siege.
In the end, police say, he surrendered to authorities without incident. The man who’d been taken hostage wasn’t hurt.
Klein Thaxton wrote on Facebook that he had “lost everything,” and that people didn’t have to worry about him anymore.
People responded by urging him to end the situation peacefully.
NEW YORK (AP) – New York City transportation officials are putting the word LOOK! on the crosswalks of some of the city’s most dangerous intersections.
They say New Yorkers are driven to distraction with their smartphones, and the simple act of looking can prevent thousands of crashes and injuries every year.
More than 9,000 New York pedestrians were injured and 41 killed in 2010, the last year for which detailed traffic crash data is available.
