Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called to fight a stubborn grass fire, Thursday, with the call coming in about 3:10-p.m., to 3768 88th Street Southeast.
Fire fighters constructed a defensive fire line as the fire caused an estimated 120-acres damage.
Residents had reported a grass fire and started back burning a fire line of their own to keep the grass fire away from some buildings to the north.
No injuries were reported in the fire.
Seven rural fire department units and 17 fire fighters were on the scene about three hours, using grass-fire rigs, a six-wheeler truck, two tankers and one personnel-transport unit.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Jamestown (CSi) Prairie Paws Rescue in Jamestown has taken in 11 dogs that came from a “puppy mill,” in South Dakota.
On Thursday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Prairie Paws Rescue Founder and President, Kaye John said the puppies were “rescued” from a breeder at a location in South Dakota, just south of the North Dakota border, earlier this week.
She added that the breeder had shut down operations.
She said the dogs. ranging in age from one to six or seven years old, are in relatively good condition, and will received medical care where needed, as they are held for foster care, and then adoption.
She pointed out that the medical needs are expensive, and thus continued monetary donations are always welcome.
Those wishing to make a monetary donation or to give gas cards for the van that extensively travels to pick up animals, can contact Kaye John, or go to the web site,
www.prairiepawsrescue.com The organization is also on Face Book.
Also on our show, Kaye said the recent “Raise the Woof,” comedy tour that came to Jamestown raised over $3,000. That money plus the $3,000 donated by country music star, Miranda Lambert allowed with the help of R.M. Stoudt in Jamestown to purchase a new van, replacing the van that was old and in need of many repairs.
Another “Raise the Woof,” show is planned for February 27, 2015, at the Gladstone Inn & Suites in Jamestown.
Before that, the 2nd Annual Paw-Sta-Palooza fundraiser is set for November 1, 2014, at a location to be determined.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Stutsman Development Corporation (JSDC) is drawing up a lease if the South Central Dakota Regional Council needs a location, following the sale for its part of the Center for Economic Development.
JSDC is buying the SCDRC’s share of the building for $125,000.
The sale is contingent on the approval of the SCDRC attorney.
No decision has been made at this time by the SCDRC Executive Committee, on a new location.
Leasing its current space from the JSDC would cost the SCDRC approximately $12.50 per square foot, and for 1,305 square feet.
The total would be $16,312 per year or $1,359 per month.

- Win people to your way of thinking that includes principles like: the only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it; show respect for the other person’s opinion and never say “you’re wrong”.
- Be a leader which includes principles like: let the other person save face; call attention to people’s mistakes indirectly; always use encouragement with the slightest improvement.
Ms Brunner says, “The course is a really eye opener for a person, it really helps a person see how to best handle those difficult situations and helps you develop the skills to be an effective leader.”

Randy Skarda, of Keene, has pleaded not guilty to five counts, including conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, distribution of meth and cocaine, and two illegal weapons charges.

Thirty-one-year-old Adelann Bradford has been charged with Class C felony child abuse or neglect.
The Bismarck Tribune reports Bradford had called police Tuesday saying she couldn’t find her son. She said she had dropped him off at her mother’s house after school.
Bradford’s mother told police she had not seen the boy all day. The boy also told police his mother had picked him up from school, and they went home.
Bradford later told police she had taken some Benadryl pills then “chugged” a beer and had a glass of wine after finding her son at home.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – State officials in the Upper Midwest are cautioning horse owners about a virus that spreads easily among the animals and can lead to breathing problems, abortions and nervous system disorders.
Three cases of equine herpesvirus have been documented this year in North Dakota and seven cases have been confirmed in Minnesota. The North Dakota horses are recovering, but three in Minnesota have been euthanized.
South Dakota hasn’t documented any cases of EHV, but the state’s Animal Industry Board earlier this month cautioned horse owners because of the cases in other states.
The American Quarter Horse Association has documented a number of cases and outbreaks across the nation over the past year, including the Minnesota cases. The association this month rescheduled events in Minnesota because of the Upper Midwest cases.
KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) – State health officials have ordered a facility in western North Dakota that handles radioactive material to cease operations immediately.
The Department of Health says it issued an emergency order Thursday to secure the Killdeer facility operated by Dyad Environmental, LLC.
The order alleges inspections earlier this month revealed various safety violations including the lack of a qualified radiation safety officer on staff.
The department says the company must cease all operations and allow state inspectors to verify compliance with the order.
The company says all compliance issues were corrected within two days of the inspection and says it invites officials to inspect the plant again.
The facility handles radioactive filter socks, a byproduct of the oil industry. The filter socks bear technologically enhanced, naturally occurring radioactive material, known as TENORM.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Construction is underway on a stretch of U.S. Highway 85 four miles west of Watford City.

The state Department of Human Services says Lutheran Social Services developed the website with support from the agency.

Educational information also is available for schools, churches, civic groups, addiction counselors, and mental health professionals.
POWERS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – When efforts to fund a $7.5 million school construction project in Powers Lake fell $1 million short, students turned to their piggy banks.
In six days, the 105 elementary school students in the northwestern North Dakota town raised nearly $1,200 in pennies and other coins. That is an average of more than 1,100 pennies per student.
Superintendent Marlyn Vatne says the money won’t be enough – but the effort made the students feel a part of the project.
The planned classroom addition and new cafeteria at the high school is being funded through loans, a state grant, a bond issue passed by voters and donations. The district has set up a fundraising fund through the North Dakota School Foundation to try to reach the goal.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota National Guard is at full strength in its chaplain corps for the first time in 15 years. The Guard appointed 1st Lieutenant Yacob Makonnen as chaplain yesterday. The Bismarck Tribune reports he will be assigned to the Bismarck-based 68th Troop Command.

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) – Football players at Minnesota State, Mankato say they are ready to practice under reinstated coach Todd Hoffner.
The Mavericks football program held a news conference Thursday, the day after players refused to practice when Hoffner returned to the school.
In a statement, junior defensive back Sam Thompson and sophomore wide receiver Kyle Riggott say the team is “ready to get back to playing football.” The players say they wanted their voice heard about their support for interim coach Aaron Keen and for a “more robust communication channel” about the coaching situation.
Hoffner said in a statement he does not take the players’ actions personally.
Hoffner returned to campus for the first time Wednesday since an arbitrator ruled he was fired unfairly last year in the wake of a child porn investigation that ultimately cleared him.
The team is scheduled to practice Friday afternoon.
