Valley City (CSi) Over 250 students, staff and residents gathered on the VCSU Campus Wednesday evening for a remembrance to baseball standout and VCSU senior Dan Buehner.

Buehner died Monday morning in the Sheyenne River in Valley, after a rubber raft carrying him and two fellow students went over the Little Dam on the river.

A search led to the discovery of his body Tuesday morning.

Valley City residents, VCSU students, staff and area college baseball teammates and coaches that sat close to each other as individuals remembered the 23-year-old.

Following the memorial Wednesday evening inside the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, hundreds of mourners outside released red and white balloons that had personal messages on them remembering both the student and standout baseball player.

VCSU head coach Casey Olney read a letter from Buehner’s father who thanked the school and city for all of their support and kind words.

Buehner’s father also asked that the Vikings baseball team, who cancelled games Tuesday and Wednesday, play on Saturday in honor of his son who was proud to be a part of the Vikings’ legacy.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports changes in the release at Jamestown Reservoir.

Pipestem Dam Manageer Bob Martin, says, yesterday,the Jamestown Dam release was lowered from 400 cfs to 200 cfs, and then to zero cfs, which is expected to last 24 hours, and is expected to be back at 400 cfs by this evening.

Martin points out there is a noticeable drop in the depth of the river downstream from the Ice House Dam.

Martin says the action was taken because the Bureau is planning a scheduled inspection of outlet works taking place.

The inspection is part of Reclamation’s Safety of Dams Program, focusing on evaluating and implementing actions to resolve safety concerns at Reclamation dams. Under this program, Reclamation will complete studies and identify and accomplish needed corrective action on Reclamation dams.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – One of two Dickinson men charged with robbing a Medina bank at gunpoint has been sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison.

Thirty-eight-year-old Satrone Boyd was charged for the Oct. 25 bank robbery at the Northland Financial bank in the southeastern North Dakota town.

Boyd’s co-defendant Rendell Hardy pleaded guilty earlier this month and will be sentenced in July.

Prosecutors say Boyd and Hardy were wearing clown masks when they held the bank.

Boyd was later picked up in Fargo and Hardy was apprehended in Dickinson.

 

Valley City (CSi) Barnes County Rural fire fighters were called out twice on Tuesday.

Fire Chief Gary Retterath says the first one was 10 miles north of I-94 on the Peak Road.

At the same time, rural fire fighter went to another grass fire near Martin’s Landing threatening a farm, however no buildings were burn in either fire.

No injuries were reported.

Before Wednesday’s rainfall, previous dry conditions and warmer temperatures aided in fueling the grass fires.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The University of Jamestown will be the location of Friday and Saturday’s Open House on the growing construction trade.

Dakota Construction Careers, is a coalition of seven building trades groups, and have been hosting the open houses across North Dakota.

High school graduates and experienced workers with skills or just have an interest to pursue a career in construction are invited.

Director for the Laborer’s District Council, Pamela Link says, the careers they will be discussing go beyond the oil patch.

 Jobs including Bricklayers, Iron Workers, Carpenters, and Painters have been discussed at open houses across the state. The event will be at the University of Jamestown’s Raugust Library Friday April 25, 2014 4-p.m., to 8-p.m., and Saturday April 26, 2014 10-a.m., to 5-p.m

Jamestown (CSI) In observance of Earth Day 2014, Renaissance Recycling and the Chamber City Beautification Committee will be serving free hot dogs and beverage to all the faithful recyclers and friends of recycling from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014 at the Recycling Center.

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The FBI is investigating the death of a 39-year-old woman whose body was found in a field near Fort Yates on the Standing Rock Reservation.
 
     FBI spokesman Kyle Loven says they believe the woman is a tribal member. Her cause of death is unclear and she has not been publicly identified. The bureau was notified of the body Tuesday.
 
     Loven says the FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs are looking into the death.

 

  BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a man who set himself on fire in Dickinson is in serious condition at a Minnesota hospital.
 
     Dickinson police reports the 33-year-old Mandan man doused himself in gasoline on Monday, after thinking he had been sprayed with chemicals. He set himself on fire when he lit a cigarette.
 
     He was taken to the Regions Burn Center in St. Paul, Minn.
 
     Police say the man faces several charges including ingestion of a controlled substance, theft of property, criminal trespass and reckless driving.
 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Police say a 19-year-old Minot man threw a shock absorber on a bonfire that exploded and injured five people.
 
     The Ward County Sheriff’s Department says four people are still hospitalized. Some of them have serious injuries.
 
     The man is facing a felony count of endangering by fire explosion. He has not appeared in court yet.
 
     The sheriff’s department and the Minot Police department responded to a call about a loud party Saturday night around 11:30 p.m. but the majority of the partygoers were gone when officers arrived. Police later learned about the explosion, investigated and took the man into custody Wednesday.
 
     He is being held in the Minot County Jail.

 

 WASHINGTON (AP) – A series of fiery train crashes spurred a push by government and industry to make safer tank cars used to ship crude oil and ethanol. But the effort is bogging down in squabbling and finger-pointing.
 
     A spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute says the railroad industry won’t share data behind their recommendations to make the cars safer. He says the oil industry wants a “comprehensive examination” of proposed changes.
 
     But the Transportation Department says it’s the oil industry that won’t share its data on the dangers of the oil being shipped. The department is drafting regulations aimed at making the cars less likely to spill their contents in the event of a crash.
 
     National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Deborah Hersman says it’s time for a referee to step in.

 

  BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Aeronautics Commission has named Kyle Wanner as the new state aeronautics director.
 
     The commission voted unanimously to hire Wanner on Wednesday. 
 
     The Mandan native had been interim director of the agency after Larry Taborsky left the position in January. Taborsky had served as director since 2009.
 
     Wanner is a pilot and has worked for the Aeronautics Commission for three years, doing airport inspections and working on aviation issues.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Milk production in North Dakota during January, February and March was down 8 percent from the first quarter of 2013.
 
     The federal Agriculture Department says production during the first quarter of 2014 in the state totaled 81 million pounds. That’s down from 88 million pounds during the same period a year ago.
 
     The number of milk cows in the state during the three months averaged 17,000 head.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A global agribusiness and a central North Dakota farmer-owned cooperative say they plan to build a fertilizer warehouse in Hamberg.
 
     CHS Incorporated and Fessenden Cooperative Association announced Wednesday they have formed a 50-50 joint venture company to build and operate the warehouse. They say the facility will be able to store 28,000 tons of nitrogen, potassium, sulfate, phosphorus and micronutrients. It will also have product blending capabilities.
 
     The new warehouse in Hamberg will primarily serve the retail business of the cooperative’s farmers. CHS will also serve its nearby wholesale customers from this location.
 
     This is the second major partnership between the two organizations. They built a greenfield grain shuttle loading facility on the BNSF Railway line in Hamberg last year.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s tax commissioner says the deadline is approaching for qualifying low-income senior citizens and disabled persons to file for a partial rent refund. Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger says the deadline for the application is May 31st.

 MANKATO, Minn. (AP) – Top officials at Minnesota State, Mankato are asking state auditors to review the dismissal of head football coach Todd Hoffner.
 
     The coach has returned to the university after he was reinstated by an arbitrator who said he was improperly fired.
 
     Hoffner was dismissed by the school in 2013, several months after he was arrested on a child pornography charge that was later dropped. Hoffner returned to his old job, even though he had taken a similar position at Minot State.
 
     In a letter, MnSCU (MINN’-skew) Chancellor Steven Rosenstone and Minnesota State President Richard Davenport said an independent review is warranted given the concerns raised about the process. The university was criticized for how it handled Hoffner’s case. The coach’s supporters said the school overreacted in the wake of the sex abuse scandal at Penn State.

The Oakland A’s have rejected a deal to play at their current ballpark in the foreseeable future, saying a 10-year lease extension offer doesn’t meet all their requirements. The Oakland Tribune reports the rejection came just an hour after the joint board that runs the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum complex announced the extension proposal.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – Three American physicians are dead and a U.S. nurse is wounded after an Afghan security guard opened fire on a group of foreign doctors at a Kabul hospital. The shooting at Cure International Hospital is the latest in a string of deadly attacks on foreign civilians in the Afghan capital this year. Two of the dead were a father and son.
 
     BEIRUT (AP) – Opposition activists say at least 18 people have been killed and scores wounded during an attack on a vegetable market by Syrian government aircraft. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says fighter jets hit the crowded market in the town of Atareb. The Observatory says the death toll is likely to rise because many were seriously wounded.
 
     BRUSSELS (AP) – An independent report gives the European Union poor marks for safeguards against corruption. The report from the watchdog organization Transparency International says official complacency, complex rules and spotty oversight have left the EU’s leading institutions vulnerable. One opinion poll finds that 70 percent of EU citizens already believe corruption is present.
 
     TOKYO (AP) – Many creditors, including those who had bitcoins on file, might not get their money back as an administrator tries to sell the assets of the Mt. Gox bitcoin exchange in Japan. Bankruptcy proceedings began today in a move that was widely expected after the Tokyo District Court decided earlier this month that the company could not resurrect itself. Bitcoins are used for transactions across borders without third parties such as banks and have become a popular investment.
 
     NEW YORK (AP) – British royal officials say the sudden death of Mark Shand has devastated his sister, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and her husband, Prince Charles. Police say Shand had stepped out of the Gramercy Park Hotel’s Rose Bar in New York to have a cigarette Wednesday morning and fell backward as he tried to re-enter through a revolving door. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
