Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown City Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in the Hugo’s Parking lot, at 12:19 p.m., on Tuesday.

Lt. Sheldon Mohr says the unoccupied vehicle that sat by itself in the lot,  had a fire under the hood.   Three City Fire Department units and 25 fire fighters were on the scene about a half hour.

No injuries were reported, with the cause undetermined, with the 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue a total loss.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The Buffalo City Tourism Foundation’s Grant/Executive Advisory Board met Tuesday at the CSi Technology Center, at Historic Franklin School.

Grant application presentations were made on behalf of the James River Rodeo by Marlyn Bertsch, and Fort Seward Reconstruction by Dale Marks.

The rodeo requested and was approved for $2,700 going toward program costs and advertising.

Bertsch said under advertising, the dollars will be used for bringing a rodeo announcer from Canada, and the rental of a sound system, plus the cost of trophy saddles. The total cost of the program is estimated at $60,000. Other revenue will come from advertising and gate sales.

He said the Rodeo at the Stutsman County Fairgrounds is planned for July 4, 5 2014.

For Fort Seward, Dale Marks requested a grant for $450, the total program cost, which was approved, for a Gatling Gun demonstration to take place on July 5, 2014, at Fort Seward. The dollars will used to pay for the individual to perform the demonstration.

Also requested, and approved by the Board was the Fort Seward request for $825, the total program cost, to help fund a Flea Market planned for August 23, 2014, at the Fort.

The dollars will go toward the costs of advertising within a one hundred mile radius of Jamestown, plus flyers and go toward insurance, paint and tape.

The organization is planning to charge $25 per table for vendors.

In other business, BCTF Marketing’s Tanea Clocksene reported a successful Branding, Logo Unveil that occurred on Friday May 9, 2014, held at the Jamestown Arts Center. She praised Red Plum Media’s visual displays at the event. T-shirts with the new logo are anticipated to be on sale at the RSVP+ store at Frontier Village.

Buffalo City Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund feels the new branding and logo is being received well by the public, as is the concept of the branding. He added that presentations will be made to service clubs and business leaders.

Executive Board President, Alden Kollman said the new gazebo replica dedication at the Stutsman County Memorial Museum grounds is Saturday May 17, 2014.

He said there will be refreshments, speakers, and bleachers set up for those in attendance. In addition postcards will be given away to those in attendance.

Swedlund pointed out that the Grant/Executive Advisory Board will meet on an as needed basis this summer, with regularly scheduled meetings to resume this fall.

 

Jamestown ND (CSi) The Jamestown City Council met in Special Session Tuesday evening at City Hall.  All members were present.

A Public Hearing was held concerning Seal Coat, Patching, Construction and Reconstruction District #14-41 and protests and the sufficiency thereof.

Follow the Public Hearing it was determined that the protests have been found to be insufficient to bar proceeding with Seal Coat, Patching, Construction and Reconstruction District #14-41.

The City Council, approved and authorized awarding the bid for Seal Coat, Patching, Construction and Reconstruction District #14-41 to Border States Paving, Inc., in the amount of $1,338,839.50.  Below the engineer’s estimate.

The City Council scheduled a public hearing relating to a project under the Municipal Industrial Development Act requested by the University of Jamestown for a planned project of dorm renovations and to pay down existing debts.

The City of Jamestown is unable to support the request, and the MIDA bonds will be issued through the City of Medina. Both cities need to concur on the action.

In local sports…

Hutchinson, KS (CSi) The Jamestown Jimmies were defeated 4-0 by Tabor on Tuesday in the NAIA National Tournament, in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Tabor’s starting pitcher Jacob Webb tossed a four hit shut out, striking out four Jimmies, allowing four Jimmie base runners.

The Jimmies will play at 5-p.m. Wednesday against the winner of Mayville State and Viterbo game on Wednesday afternoon.

The winner of that contest advances to the Hutchinson Regional Championship game taking on Tabor, Thursday morning in the double elimination tournament.

The tournament winner heads to the national world series.

 

In state news…

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A man working on the roof of a four-story building in Minot fell to his death.
 
     Police say 48-year-old Richard Rayburn of Hillsboro, Ohio, was pronounced dead at a hospital on Monday after the incident.
 
     Authorities say Rayburn was trying to gain control of a wind-blown piece of plywood when he stepped on a loose piece of plywood and slid off the roof. They say Rayburn had been tethered to the roof but had just taken off the tether to reposition himself when the incident happened.
 
     Police did not identify the company for which Rayburn was working.

 

  BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck police say the suspect in an armed robbery at a Bismarck pharmacy got away with narcotics.
 
Police have released surveillance video from the incident at The Medicine Shoppe. The suspect is described as a male, 5 foot 10 inches tall, wearing a light-colored sweatshirt, cap, sunglasses and a mask.
 
     Officers responded to the store around 10:15 a.m. Monday after receiving calls about a man threatening an employee with a knife. The man fled the scene on foot.
 
     Police questioned a man regarding the robbery, but later released him because of insufficient evidence.

 

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – United Airlines will begin a daily roundtrip flight between the North Dakota oil patch hub of Williston and Houston on Aug.19.
 
     U.S. Sen. John Hoeven made the announcement Tuesday. The North Dakota Republican says linking Williston to United’s Houston hub will help meet demand for expanded air service in western North Dakota.
 
     Williston’s airport currently has four daily flights to Minneapolis through Delta Air Lines and four daily flights to Denver through United.
 
     Tickets for flights between Williston and Houston are currently on sale.

 

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – Officials say an out-of-control oil well in northwestern North Dakota has been plugged.
 
     Williams County Emergency Manager Mike Hallesy says the well located near Tioga was under control on Tuesday.
 
     Denver-based Emerald Oil Inc. reported to state regulators on Friday that the well was out of control. Officials say an unknown amount of oil, gas and other liquids was contained on site.
 
     Officials say the well sprayed mist and emitted hydrogen sulfide from natural gas, prompting air-quality monitoring and road closures in the area.
 
     Emerald Oil CEO McAndrew Rudisill says a break in a pipe near the surface likely caused the problem during hydraulic fracturing operations. He says the well was “killed” on Monday and has since been plugged.
 
     He says fracking operations likely will resume later this week.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Fargo man is in custody after a large drug bust in the city.
 
 Police say they seized $14,000 in cash Monday along with large quantities of marijuana, cocaine, hashish, mushrooms, LSD, and prescription pills and patches worth more than $12,000.
 
     The bust happened at a residence close to an elementary school.
 
     Court documents did not immediately list formal charges against the 20-year-old suspect.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Spring planting continues to lag behind the average pace in North Dakota because of cool, wet weather.
 
     The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that 11 percent of the state’s spring wheat crop is planted, compared to 39 percent on average, and only 1 percent of the durum wheat is in the ground, compared to 23 percent.
 
     Seeding of barley, oats, canola, flaxseed, dry edible peas, potatoes, sugar beets and corn also is behind the average pace over the past five years.
 
     The report says North Dakota ranchers have been busy the past week moving animals from winter feeding areas to pastures. Calving is 87 percent complete.
 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The mother of a baby born in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Bismarck says her son is doing well.
 
Mother, Alesia Medeiros, was waiting in a vehicle while her mother-in-law shopped last Thursday night. Medeiros started going into labor and asked a woman nearby to call 911.
 
     Store co-manager Derrick Orr helped deliver the baby, with the help of others who came to the aid of Medeiros and the woman on the phone with 911 dispatchers, who passed along instructions. Orr used his shoelace to tie off the umbilical cord as the ambulance arrived.
 
     Baby, Diesel, was born six weeks early and weighed fewer than 5 pounds, but Medeiros says he is doing fine, though he remains in the hospital.

 

In world and national news…

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Some employees at two hospitals in Orlando, Florida, have been told to stay home for two weeks — and they’re being monitored for symptoms of a rare virus. The 20 employees came in contact with a Saudi resident who was infected with the second confirmed U.S. case of the virus. So far, none of the workers has tested positive for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. 
 
     HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) – A convicted murderer who is scheduled to die in Texas Tuesday night is pinning his hopes on two final appeals. One appeal from Robert Campbell challenges the state’s plan to use a drug for which it will not reveal the source. That was the case with the drugs that were used in a botched Oklahoma execution two weeks ago.
 
     SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California is collecting more tax revenue than it expected — but the money is already being spent. Gov. Jerry Brown Tuesday released a state budget that includes record-high spending — including a billion dollars more in spending from the state’s general fund than Brown had proposed a few months ago. Tax revenue in the current fiscal year is running ahead of expectations by more than $2 billion, but the governor’s office says expenditures increased at a similar rate.
 
     CHICAGO (AP) – It’s been a rough day for air travelers in and out of Chicago. Smoke in a regional radar facility forced a halt to all incoming and outgoing flights at both of Chicago’s airports. Inbound flights that were already in the air over the Chicago area were handled by a backup facility.

 
     NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) – A Yale basketball player who was expected to play a big role on the team next season has decided to take a year off — to sing. Brandon Sherrod is one of 14 juniors at the school who’ve been picked to become members of the Whiffenpoofs, the school’s famous male a cappella glee club. Members spend a year performing all over the world. Sherrod, who has never been outside of the United States, says it’s the opportunity of a lifetime. The 6-foot-6 Sherrod, who averaged 6.8 points and 4.3 rebounds last season, hopes to rejoin the team in 2015, and eventually play pro basketball.
