Jamestown (CSi) Plans are set for the dedication of the gazebo replica at the Stutsman County Memorial Museum in Jamestown.
On Thursday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Museum Treasurer, Alden Kollman who conceived the idea, and a major worker on the project said, the dedication will be on Saturday May 17, 2014, beginning at 1-p.m.
The event will feature a historical presentation by Keith Norman, with the Jamestown Middle School Band, performing and the high school band on hand, along with bleachers to be set up for those in attendance, with refreshments available.
Other speakers include Dave Smette from the Jamestown Rotary Club, a major financial contributor to the project, Casey Stoudt from the Jamestown Community Foundation both of whom Kollman said were “instrumental” in the gazebo project speaking about their respective organizations.
Then, Donald Cavalier from Rotary International will follow with a formal dedication of the peace pole that was installed at the Gazebo site, leading into the champagne bath.
School students will be invited to visit the gazebo on field trips, as Kollman added that the gazebo may be used for weddings, and family reunions, or other gatherings.
Reservations may be made after the Stutsman County Memorial Museum opens later this month at 252-6741, or before that by calling Alden Kollman.
Kollman pointed out that the gazebo is a larger replica of the original gazebo that was built in 1883 and located along the railroad tracks in Jamestown across from what is now the Memorial Building.
The original gazebo was visited by Union, Civil War General, and later President U.S. Grant.
Also on our show, was Charlie Kourajian who assisted in the building of the new gazebo. The new gazebo was planned and in large part built by Alden Kollman, with a big assist from Alden’s wife Landa, and other volunteers.
Kollman was responsible for the planning of the gazebo, the logistics
and most of the actual work. About 12-13 volunteer workers assisted in the building, and a number of businesses also provided in-kind services.
Financial help came from the Rotary Club, the Jamestown Community Foundation and the Gazebo Fund from the 2000 Millennium All-Class Reunion.
After the dedication and the Stutsman County Museum will be open for visitors that day to start the 2014 season.
The museum is open Monday thru Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. starting May 17 through September.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Midwest farm aid group that has grown even more than its founder dreamed possible is using the largest grant in its history to add staff and plan for the future.
Farm Rescue helps farmers in need in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and eastern Montana plant crops and harvest crops and hay. The nonprofit is getting nearly half a million dollars from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.
Farm Rescue founder Bill Gross says the three-year grant will be used to fund a development officer position, and to hire a consultant to develop a strategic plan for the future.
Gross started Farm Rescue in North Dakota in 2006 with just a handful of volunteers. It has since helped more than 250 farm families in the five states.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bond has been set at $3,000 cash for a Bismarck woman accused in state court of punching a store employee who confronted her about shoplifting. The Bismarck Tribune reports 36-year-old Leah Hatzenbuhler faces a felony robbery charge that carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. A telephone listing for her was not in service yesterday.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Minneapolis lawyer who will soon be challenging South Dakota’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage says he’s considering taking on North Dakota’s ban, as well.
Joshua Newville says he’s been contacted by interested couples in North Dakota who want to challenge the state’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. North Dakotans overwhelmingly supported the constitutional amendment in 2004, passing a ballot measure with 73 percent approval.
Same-sex marriage opponents say a challenge wouldn’t be entirely unexpected. When Newville officially challenges the South Dakota law, North Dakota and Montana will be the only states where same-sex marriage isn’t legal or a constitutional ban isn’t being contested in court.
Newville says nothing is certain and that right now he’s “exploring the possibility” of representing several couples in North Dakota.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A judge has ruled that delays in bringing a murder case to trial don’t violate the defendant’s right to a speedy trial.
Joshua Clark faces a murder conspiracy charge in the May 2013 death of 18-year-old John Swain, who had recently moved from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Bismarck, North Dakota.
Clark sought to have his case dismissed. Judge Bruce Haskell denied the request but moved Clark’s trial from August to July.
Authorities allege Clark and Theo Crowe lured Swain into a Bismarck home, hit him with a hammer, cut off his legs and hid his body. Swain’s body was found in June 2013 at the home of Crowe’s grandmother in Poplar, Montana.
Crowe pleaded guilty in October and is a serving life in prison.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Public Service Commission says North Dakotans prefer cell phones but the number of traditional wired telephones has risen for the first time in a decade.
The PSC says there are 258,152 landlines in North Dakota. That’s up nearly 2,200 over last year.
The number of wireless phones currently in use in North Dakota is 521,578. Regulators say the number of cell phones has increased 76 percent increase in the past decade.
The number of cell phone lines exceeded the number of landlines in 2006.
The PSC gathers data on wireless accounts and traditional phone lines to calculate a tax on each line. Collections from the monthly tax, which is now 4 cents per line, pays for a telephone relay service that is used by the deaf.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The city of Minot has documented more than 400 properties neglected or abandoned after the devastating 2011 Souris River flood.
Twenty officials from the city’s engineering, planning and inspection departments spread out across the city on Thursday. City Engineer Lance Meyer says they took photographs and surveyed properties for 24 nuisance violations listed in city ordinance.
Some residents have complained about the so-called zombie homes, saying they are a health and safety issue. The City Council earlier this month dedicated $74,000 in sales tax money to immediately clean up the worst of the properties. U. S. Rep. Kevin Cramer says he will look into the possibility of federal aid.
The Souris River overflowed and swamped more than 4,000 homes, businesses and other structures in Minot in June 2011.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – An affordable workforce housing project has broken ground in northeast Minot. The North Dakota Housing Finance Agency says the 42 units will rent from $400 to about $800 a month depending on income and family size. The project is expected to be finished by June 2015.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – U.S. Sen. John Hoeven says aerospace and defense technology firm Northrop Grumman is on track to sign a lease to be the anchor tenant at the Grand Sky technology park at Grand Forks Air Force Base.
Hoeven says Grand Sky will make Grand Forks a leading center for the development and operations of unmanned aerial systems.
Hoeven says he also expects an Enhanced Use Lease between Air Force officials and Grand Forks County to be signed in June to establish Grand Sky on Grand Forks Air Base. Grand Sky will occupy 217 acres of the base.
Last December, the FAA selected Grand Forks as one of six drone test sites in the nation.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State’s Krista Menke is bringing a 28-7 record into today’s regional softball opener in Minneapolis against Auburn. The Bison will be making their fifth national appearance in six years, thanks in large part to a quick turnaround by Menke in the conference tournament.

Kevin Durant hit five of his eight 3-point attempts and scored 25 of his game-high 39 points in the second half. Russell Westbrook shot just 4-for-15 but finished with 19 points and 12 assists to help the Thunder overcome Chris Paul’s 25 points and 11 assists.

NEW YORK (AP) – WNBA general managers are predicting the Minnesota Lynx to repeat as champions and Los Angeles’ Candace Parker as the top choice to earn the MVP award for a second straight year. Tulsa’s Odyssey Sims edged out No. 1 pick Chiney Ogwumike for Rookie of the Year honors. The WNBA’s 18th season begins Friday with five games.

NEW YORK (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. will lead the committee to find a successor to baseball Commissioner Bud Selig (SEE’-lihg), who is scheduled to retire in January. The committee already has started meeting and is to identify the candidate or candidates for Major League Baseball’s executive council, which will make a recommendation to owners. Selig sidestepped whether he would remain as commissioner emeritus, saying details would be worked out in the coming months.
PGA-BYRON NELSON
IRVING, Texas (AP) – Leader Peter Hanson made his only back-nine birdie with a 6-foot putt on 18 to close out a 5-under-par 65 in the first round of the Byron Nelson Championship near Dallas. Hanson made the turn at 5 under after shooting 30 on the front side.
David Duval, Marc Leishman and Tim Wilkinson are one stroke behind Hanson, whose six birdie putts were inside 10 feet.
Martin Kaymer (KY’-mur) is among eight players at 67, four days after he won The Players Championship.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Jay Haas, Mark Calcavecchia (kal-kah-lah-VEK’-ee-uh), Olin Browne and Chien Soon Lu share the first-round lead in the Regions Tradition, the first of the Champions Tour’s five majors.
All four shot 3-under 69s under windy, unseasonably cool conditions at Shoal Creek. It was the highest score to lead after the first round at the Tradition since three players were tied at 3 under in 1990 at Desert Mountain in Arizona.
LPGA…
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) – Azahara Munoz and Austin Ernst are co-leaders through the first-round lead in the Kingsmill Championship at 6-under 65. The former NCAA individual champions completed their morning rounds on the front nine at Kingsmill’s River Course. Munoz birdied four of her last seven holes, and Ernst closed with birdies on No. 7 and 9.
South Korea’s Hee Young Park shot 66.
TENNIS…
ROME (AP) – Sara Errani took advantage of a supportive crowd to beat second-seeded Li Na 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 Friday and reach the Italian Open semifinals for the second consecutive year.
The 10th-seeded Errani is attempting to become the first Italian woman to win Rome since Raffaella Reggi took the title 29 years ago.
Li was unusually inconsistent, committing 52 unforced errors to Errani’s 21.
Errani celebrated by waving her arms to incite the crowd. Her semifinal opponent will be either 2007 and 2008 Rome champion Jelena Jankovic or third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska.
In men’s play, eighth-seeded Milos Raonic held off Jeremy Chardy of France 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 and will next play either Novak Djokovic or David Ferrer.
The Italian Open is the last key warmup before the French Open starts in nine days.
In world and national news…
BAGHDAD (AP) – An Al-Qaida splinter group says attacks in Baghdad that killed 19 people are in retaliation for ongoing military operations by government forces on the insurgent-held city of Fallujah. In a statement posted on a militant website today, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant claims responsibility for yesterday’s bombings.
MARIUPOL, Ukraine (AP) – There’s a glimmer of hope today for an end to the chaos in a major eastern Ukrainian city. The presence of citizen patrols made up of steelworkers in Mariupol (mah-ROO’-pahl) has apparently prompted pro-Russian insurgents to retreat from government buildings. Rinat Akhmetov, Ukraine’s richest man, had urged the steelworkers at his factories to help the police restore order.
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) – Nigeria’s president won’t be making his first visit to the beleaguered northeast after all. Officials say security concerns are forcing President Goodluck Jonathan to cancel a trip to the traumatized town from which Islamic extremists abducted more than 300 schoolgirls a month ago.
SAN DIEGO (AP) – Officials say preparedness after a disastrous 2003 blaze has helped keep things from getting even worse in San Diego County, where nine wildfires erupted. Just a week before the fires, scores of state firefighters were sent along with engines and aircraft to the region ahead of a heat wave and gusty winds. Still, flames have charred more than 15 square miles, may have caused one death and more than $20 million in damage. Officials are investigating whether some fires were arson.
UNDATED (AP) – Legal experts say Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling isn’t likely to be on the winning side when he fights NBA efforts to force him to sell the team over his recent racist comments. But they admit an army of lawyers and multiple lawsuits could slow the process. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is pushing for a swift vote against Sterling, which requires a minimum of three-fourths of the other 29 controlling owners to agree.
