BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck woman is accused of getting into a crash while driving drunk with two teenagers in her vehicle.
Thirty-eight-year-old Debbie Trehus faces several misdemeanors including drunken driving, and a felony child neglect or abuse charge. She could face more than seven years in prison if convicted.
Judge Tom Schneider set bond for Trehus at $1,000 cash or surety. Court documents do not list an attorney for her, and a telephone listing could not be found.
Police allege that Trehus’ vehicle crashed into a power line pole about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, breaking it in half.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Passenger numbers at North Dakota’s eight large airports surpassed 100,000 in the month of May for the first time.
The state Aeronautics Commission says there were 100,118 boardings, an increase of nearly 8 percent over the year.
Aeronautics Commissioner Kyle Wanner says passenger numbers in the state have doubled in the past nine years.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A U.S. House subcommittee has scheduled a hearing later this month on child protection and the justice system on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation.
Rep. Kevin Cramer requested the hearing. The North Dakota Republican says he wants to assess whether congressional action is warranted to address problems with child abuse and deaths that have plagued the reservation.
The Spirit Lake tribe has been overhauling its child protection system, which came under fire in 2012. The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs stepped in late that year to bolster and oversee the system.
The hearing of the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Indian and Alaska Native Affairs is set for June 24 in the Longworth House Office Building in Washington, D.C.
(On Monday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, at 8:25 a.m., Betty Jo Krenz of Woodworth will be our guest. She is expected to testify at the hearing. She has worked as a case manager for Spirit Lake Tribal Social Services. She said she was terminated in June 2011, after bringing problems of child abuse to light on the reservation. Sine that time, she has been an advocate for Native American children.)

Metro Transit canceled the Northstar service early Friday after about 16 empty BNSF freight cars jumped the tracks. There were no injuries.
Metro Transit offered limited bus service from Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley, but advised customers to find other transportation.
Metro Transit spokesman John Siqveland says a decision on weekend service will be made later Friday. Officials were working on a plan for Friday’s evening commute.

In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. combat troops won’t be returning to Iraq. That option is being ruled out by President Barack Obama — but he says he’s considering a range of other options for dealing with the violent Islamic insurgency there. The last U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq in 2011 after more than eight years of war.
UNDATED (AP) – Soldiers and commanders who served in the long Iraq war are struggling to make sense of this week’s stunning gains by insurgents in places they once fought to protect — like Mosul and Fallujah. Many of those vets are now reflecting with bitterness and frustration on the sacrifices of a war that killed nearly 4,500 Americans. Army Col. Barry Johnson, who is now retired and living in Idaho, says the losses make the war feel like a waste of lives.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) – There’s no word on when the parents of Bowe Bergdahl will arrive at an Army base in Texas to be reunited with their son — who was freed from five years in captivity in Afghanistan two weeks ago. He’s been recovering since then at an Army facility in Germany, but was flown to Texas overnight. In a statement, Bergdahl’s parents are asking for privacy as they prepare to see him for the first time in years.
WASHINGTON (AP) – It’s been three years since a series of incidents in which air traffic controllers were found to be sleeping on the job. But now, a government-sponsored report finds that they’re still being allowed to work schedules that cram five work shifts into four 24-hour periods. The report says the work schedules make it likely that they will get little or no sleep before overnight shifts. The schedules are popular with controllers because at the end of their last shift, they have 80 hours off before they return to work the next week.
WHITNEY, Texas (AP) – Fire crews have begun burning a luxury house that’s teetering atop a crumbling 75-foot cliff over a Central Texas lake. Authorities say destroying the 4,000-square-foot house by fire is better than waiting for it to topple into Lake Whitney. The house has been condemned and the owners evacuated the property about two weeks ago. Chunks of the cliff – and the $700,000 home – have been tumbling into the water.
