Jamestown (CSi) The North Dakota Patriot Guard’s eighth annual Fallen Heroes Memorial and Honor Ride was held Saturday at the Jamestown Civic Center.

There were about 300 people in atttendance.

The memorial honored three North Dakota men who were killed in combat while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Sgt. 1st Class Darren M. Linde, of Devils Lake, and Spc. Tyler Orgaard, of Bismarck, who were killed in action on Dec. 3, 2012, when an improvised explosive device struck the vehicle they were riding in in southern Afghanistan. Both soldiers were assigned to the 818th Engineer Company (Sappers) of the North Dakota National Guard.

Also honored was Marine Sgt. Michael Bitz, originally from Wishek, was killed in action on March 23, 2003, near Nasiriaya, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Assault Amphibious Battalion, 2nd Marine Division.

A North Dakota Patriot Guard ride Captain, George Quigley, of Jamestown a says about 175 people were signed up for the honor ride, that took place after the memorial, with proceeds from the event going to other Patriot Guard events that honor those who died for the country.

The families of all three men were present at the Fallen Heroes Memorial. The North Dakota Patriot Guard presented each family with a plaque honoring their soldier’s or Marine’s sacrifice and a painted portrait of their family member.

The Patriot Guard also honored the Gold Star families from North Dakota. Gold Star families are the families of service members who have died in combat or in service to the country.

The keynote speaker at the Fallen Heroes Memorial was Col. Giselle Wilz, a veteran of Desert Storm, who said one of the best ways to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the U.S. was to share their stories.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The James River Humane Society thanks the community for the donations made during the recent Open House on May 17, 2014.

On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, the shelter’s Assistant Animal Caretaker, and Assistant to the President, Jenny Hieb said a number of visitors stopped by and $500 in donations were received that day.

She said the event was not officially a fundraiser, but rather was geared to make the community aware of the animals available for adoption at the shelter.
She also thanked Dollar Tree for putting up a donation box for the benefit, and tanked Hugo’s for, and additional have a donation box.

The next event will be the Hogs for Dogs with the date in July to be announced.
Dog volunteers are needed in the evenings, with duties such as cleaning kennels, feeding and socializing with the dogs. Volunteer applications are available at the shelter and online at www.jamesriverhumanesociety.org. or can call 252-0747 for more information.

Othee donations needed include cleaning items such as laundry detergent, bleach, Pine-Sol, Mr Clean, etc.

Currently the James River Humane Society has 14 dogs and 18 cats available for adoption.

 VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – Valley City State University has launched a search for the school’s next president.
 
     The university has set an Aug. 25 application deadline. A presidential search committee will review the applications. Top candidates will be forwarded to the state Board of Higher Education for consideration.
 
     Current Valley City State President Steven Shirley is taking over as president of Minot State University in July. Vice President for Academic Affairs Margaret Dahlberg will oversee Valley City State until a new president takes office, likely in January.

 

 MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a Mandan man faces drunken driving, fleeing and other charges after he crashed and rolled a stolen vehicle near a mobile home park.
 
     Mandan Police Lt. Rick Schaaf says  the 36-year-old man was arrested Friday after a police chase.
 
     Schaaf says the stolen vehicle entered a ditch near the mobile home park, causing it to flip.
 
     Schaaf says an ambulance was called but the man did not have to be taken to a hospital. Instead, he was taken to jail.
 
     No one else was hurt.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A federal judge has certified class action status for a lawsuit against a North Dakota-based custom-harvesting operation.
 
     The complaint was filed in 2010 against Altendorf Harvesting in Minto by two brothers from South Africa, Peter and Andrew Murray. The Murrays say the company owes unpaid wages to them and dozens of other employees from other countries.
 
     The class includes all nonsupervisory workers employed by the company under temporary work visas since Oct. 28, 2004. Trial is set for Sept. 22 in Fargo.
 
     Defense attorneys in the case could not be reached for comment.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says an Oklahoma paving company has been fined for doing work in North Dakota without a contractor’s license.
 
     Stenehjem says company owner Sylvester Cooper of Spiro, Oklahoma, was fined $5,000 and ordered to repay $5,000 to a customer.
 
     Stenehjem says Spiro has now obtained his contractor’s license.
 
     Stenehjem says North Dakota gets an influx of paving companies that come to the state every summer looking for work. He says some are reputable companies but “many are fly-by-night operators who target rural communities, do poor quality work, and then flee the state before the complaints come in.”

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A canvassing board will have to decide whether to identify the vote count for candidates receiving write-ins in Minot’s mayoral election.
 
     Ward County Auditor Devra Smestad says identifying write-ins isn’t required if the outcome of an election wouldn’t be affected. According to state law, a write-in candidate can request a count only in a very close contest.
 
     Chuck Barney ran unopposed in the election last week and got more than 1,300 votes.
 
     The number of votes cast for all write-in candidates was just more than 1,000.
 
     The canvassing board was slated to meet today.

 

  BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Health officials will address the state of immunization in North Dakota at an upcoming conference in Bismarck. The conference will address vaccine storage and handling, vaccine-preventable diseases in North Dakota and updated vaccine recommendations. The Bismarck Tribune reports the conference begins July 15th and is expected to attract at least 200 people.

 

TIOGA, N.D. (AP) – A Tioga teen is back home and in good health after receiving a heart transplant
 
17-year-old Bree Hanson was greeted at the Tioga airport this weekend with 111 balloons, or one for each day she was away from home getting a new heart.
 
     Hanson was placed on a waiting list for a new heart more than a year ago. She says she now feels better than ever after returning from a Minnesota hospital.
 
     Hanson says she wants to get back to doing “regular North Dakota stuff” like camping, fishing, riding ATVs and shooting guns with her boyfriend and father.

Jamestown (CSi) The North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, at the Jamestown Civic Center, will hold the next inductions, with the Gala on Saturday June 21, 2014.

Being inducted this year are Glenn Hansen, Jim LeClair, and Mike Podolak, receiving the Cliff Cushman Award.

It begins at 5:30-p.m., with a social, and silent auction, followed by the banquet, and concluding with the Induction Ceremony at 7-p.m.

A table of six to be located toward the front of the banquet area, may be purchased for $200, which includes six tickets, table signs, a bottle of wine, and a private dessert.

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Game and Fish Department says it has paid more than $481,000 to counties in which it owns or leases land, $58,000 less than for the previous year.
 
     The payments are in lieu of property taxes. The payments for 2013 ranged from less than $100 in Emmons and Griggs counties to more than $52,000 in Sheridan County.
 
     The Game and Fish Department manages more than 200,000 acres for wildlife habitat and public hunting in 51 counties. The department does not own or manage any land in Traill or Renville counties.

 

 BELCOURT, N.D. (AP) – Horse racing is back at the Chippewa Downs in Belcourt.
 
 Races began Saturday and will run each weekend through July 6.
 
     Horses will be competing for purses of about $2,000. Some high stakes races will have purses of up to $8,000.
 
     Chippewa Downs features a half-mile oval with a 350-yard straight-away. The newspaper reports that thoroughbreds will run races of four to eight furlongs, the latter a distance of one mile.
 
     Doug DeMontigny is the chairman of the Turtle Mountain Outdoor Recreation Development Association. He says horses in the field are from across the U.S. and Canada.

  SAN ANTONIO (AP) – The San Antonio Spurs have won their fifth NBA championship in 16 seasons by whipping Miami 104-87 in Game 5, ending the Heat’s two-year reign. The Spurs trailed 22-6 before outscoring the Heat by 35 over the next 2  1/2 quarters. BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) – Jimmie Johnson won for the third time in four races by finally conquering Michigan International Speedway. Johnson surged ahead with about 10 laps remaining and held off Kevin Harvick to earn his first victory in 25 career starts at MIS. Brad Keselowski finished third after two straight runner-up showings at Dover and Pocono.

 UNDATED (AP) – Switzerland won its World Cup opener by scoring late in stoppage time to beat Ecuador 2-1. Argentina also earned a 2-1 triumph over Bosnia as Lionel Messi scored the eventual game-winner in the 65th minute. And Karim Benzema scored twice as France opened World Cup play with a 3-0 win over Honduras.

 OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – TCU and Virginia have reached the winner’s bracket in the College World Series. Boomer White laced a tiebreaking single while the Horned Frogs were scoring twice in the eighth inning to beat the Red Raiders 3-2.The Cavaliers beat Mississippi 2-1 on Mike Papi’s RBI double with two out in the bottom of the ninth.

 PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) – Martin Kaymer (KY’-mur) has tied the fourth-largest margin of victory at the U.S. Open, finishing eight strokes ahead of Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler. Kaymer is the seventh player to lead the tournament wire-to-wire, closing with a 1-under 69 for a 9-under total. It’s the second major title for Kaymer, who claimed the PGA Championship in 2010.

 DETROIT (AP) – The Minnesota Twins placed Trevor Plouffe on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a strained left oblique muscle. The Twins recalled Pedro Florimon from Triple-A Rochester. Plouffe sustained the injury in Saturday’s 12-9 loss to the Tigers while diving for Ian Kinsler’s infield single.

   BERLIN (AP) – Formula One racing icon Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma nor is he a hospital patient. His manager says Schumacher still has a “long phase of rehabilitation,” from a head injury suffered in a skiing accident. There’s no word on when the seven-time Formula 1 champion was released or where he was taken.

 WASHINGTON (AP) – The turmoil in Iraq has prompted a security reboot at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Some personnel are being moved to safer places and around 100 Marines and Army soldiers are being brought in. The moves come as a militant Sunni Muslim offshoot of al-Qaida captured yet another town in northern Iraq. Tal Afar is ethnically mixed and there are worries of violence against Shiites.
 
     RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) – Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is condemning both the West Bank kidnapping of three hitchhiking Israeli teens and Israel’s subsequent crackdown that has resulted in the arrest of dozens of members of the militant Hamas movement. Israel says Hamas is behind the abductions but has also held Abbas and his self-rule government in the West Bank responsible for the fate of the three students.
 
     MADRID (AP) – Authorities in Spain and Germany have announced several terrorism-related arrests. Eight people in Spain and another in Germany are suspected of working for a jihadist group in Iraq and Syria. European authorities have stepped up their cross-border co-operation since four people were killed in Belgium by a suspected French Islamic extremist returned from Syria.
 
     MOSCOW (AP) – Russia says Ukraine can’t have any more natural gas until it starts paying but the same pipeline also carries gas meant for Europe. Moscow’s decision to cut supplies earmarked for Ukraine does not immediately affect the gas flow to Europe, but could disrupt the long-term energy supply to the region if the payment issue is not resolved.
