GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Parts of North Dakota look to be in for
some early October snowfall.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather
advisory for the west and central parts of the state late Wednesday
and early Thursday, and a winter storm watch for the northern Red
River Valley.
Forecasters say as much as 3 inches of snow could fall in some
eastern areas by Thursday afternoon.
The weather service says measurable snow is not all that
uncommon in North Dakota this time of year, and snow that
accumulates early in the season usually melts.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – A Fort Ransom North Dakota woman is facing murder

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Valley City Epworth United Methodist Women’s Annual Bazaar and Luncheon fundraiser for missions will be held October 6 at 680 8th Ave SW.

On Tuesday’s (Oct 2, 2012) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Publicity Chairperson,

Helen Joy Noeske, said, Barb Young is leading the group effort to provide a pleasant Apple Harvest Saturday for the community with a tasty luncheon and craft sale.

Bazaars are known for their specialties. Gift Baskets have become Epworth’s trademark. Down the hall it’s classrooms become Epworth’s “treasure trove” shops of adorable, reasonable, and useful gifts and foods for sale.

To mention just a few of the “finds” to be discovered – Handcrafted doll beds with storage (3 sizes with bedskirt, sheet, pillow, and comforter to provide comfort for Barbies and dolls). Children’s travel pillows. Attractive velvet lined ribbon headbands. Children’s activity bags. Scarves. Fleece ponchos. An abundant supply of lefse. Also a Bakery, and the popular dish cloths, Etc.

Members have prepared an ultimate, special basket of useful, neat, and familiar items pertaining to this theme of Apple Harvest. To be gifted to a lucky person. Each one who buys a ticket for the luncheon may put their name and phone number on it for a drawing.

Heavenly Creations, Epworth’s 2011 Collection of Recipes, contains the recipes for this year’s luncheon menu and will be available for sale.

The luncheon menu includes a chicken tortilla wrap and choice of Lasagna Soup or White Chili. The menu will also include a choice of Apple Crisp or Pumpkin Squares, which are cozy old time favorite desserts that are beloved by generations.

Barb Young, chairperson, and Bev Enger, Epworth’s UMW president, assure men and women will appreciate the reasonable prices and good quality ($7 luncheon) that will enable the women to help support local missions such as Salvation Army, Faith and Action, Barnes County Food Pantry, and Valley City’s Abused Persons Outreach Center as well as national and world missions.

With the recent addition to Epworth, space will accommodate the bazaar more handily than ever. There are no steps and the parking lot is large.

After you have finished shopping you can leave your “stash” at the “Park and Shop” before going to the luncheon in the dining room. Carry out services are available also.

Hamm says, “We want to make sure all Medicare beneficiaries know this is the time to compare Part D drug plans. Beneficiaries used to have until the end of the year, but for the second year in a row, the enrollment period ends Dec. 7, 2012. It’s very important to review your plan before that date.”

Jamestown area residents are invited to attend a free enrollment event 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at the James River Senior Center, 502 10th Ave. SE, Jamestown.

The Insurance Department’s State Health Insurance Counseling Program (SHIC) staff is traveling to seven cities around the state during the annual enrollment period, offering free assistance in switching or enrolling in a Medicare prescription drug plan.

If you will be attending an event and have been given a yellow drug retrieval card, please bring it to the event for expedited service.

Eligible North Dakotans who are unable to attend an annual enrollment event have two other options:

KARLSTAD, Minn. (AP) – Evacuees have returned to their homes in a small northwestern Minnesota town after fire crews contained a rapidly-spreading wildfire fueled by brisk winds.

State fire marshal Bruce Roed (ROHD) said Wednesday the fire is
95 percent contained and has not grown since Tuesday night when
about 400 people returned to their homes in the Kittson County town
of Karlstad.
The wildfire earlier burned about 12 square miles and destroyed
six to eight homes in the Karlstad area.

Authorities evacuated Karlstad’s nursing home, school, assisted living center and a group home as the fire blanketed the community in thick smoke.
City Clerk Sue Dufault says people were evacuated to Hallock,
about 20 miles to the northwest.
Roed says the possibility of 6 inches of snow Wednesday is
welcome news to firefighters.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 21-year-old Fargo man faces kidnapping and
attempted murder charges after he reportedly beat his ex-girlfriend
with a car jack handle, choked her and threatened to kill her if
she went to police.
Mason William Seaborn was arrested Sunday at his home in Fargo. He was being held  in the Cass County Jail in Fargo while he awaits extradition
to Clay County in Minnesota.

No lawyer was listed on court documents for Seaborn.
The woman told authorities she was drinking with Seaborn when he
reportedly became angry. He reportedly began punching and hitting
her with a jack handle in his car.
Authorities say the woman had a broken front tooth, marks and
cuts and was heavily bruised.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) –   A North Dakota geologist says an
earthquake in the western oil patch is not connected to hydraulic
fracturing.

The Friday quake about 11 miles southeast of Williston registered at magnitude 3.3 – enough to be felt but not strong
enough to cause damage.
Geologist Fred Anderson with the state Mineral Resources
Department says the  quake was consistent with historical seismic activity in the region.

He says speculation that oil field fracking might have
caused it isn’t plausible.

Fracking involves pumping water, sand and chemicals underground
to break up shale rock so oil can be retrieved.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The head of the AFL-CIO hopes a national
boycott of American Crystal Sugar products will bring the company
back to the bargaining table and end its 14-month lockout of union
workers in North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.

The labor federation announced yesterday that the boycott will begin in a couple of weeks. No new talks in the lockout are scheduled.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – The Watford City Council has decided
to allow unlimited off-sale liquor licenses in the booming
community in the western North Dakota oil patch.
“Off-sale” refers to liquor that is sold to be consumed off
the premises. Watford City has had only one off-sale license for
nearly 60 years, because city ordinance allows only one per 3,000
residents.
The city is growing quickly because of the oil boom. The
official 2010 census is 1,740 people, but the city estimates the
actual number is more than 5,000.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – The city engineer in the western North
Dakota oil patch city of Dickinson is resigning because of his
workload and stress.
Shawn Soehren told city commissioners this week that he wants to
be done on Oct. 15, though he will help with the transition to a
new city engineer.
Soehren has been with the city for almost a dozen years. Mayor Dennis
Johnson says he will be missed.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An El Salvador citizen who was deported
twice from the United States has been sentenced for illegally
entering the country a third time.
Carlos Guerrero-Gutierrez pleaded guilty earlier to re-entry of
deported alien.
Authorities say Guerrero-Gutierrez was a passenger in a vehicle
that was stopped for a traffic violation on July 2 near Watford
City.
Guerrero-Gutierrez was convicted of sexual battery in Oklahoma
in 2003 and was deported. He illegally entered the United States
again and was deported in 2008.
U.S. District Judge Patrick Conmy on Monday sentenced
Guerrero-Gutierrez to two yeas and three months in prison.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A national ratings agency says the
state-owned Bank of North Dakota is in great shape.
Standard & Poor’s raised the bank’s credit ratings last
December. A new review says the ratings are justified.
It says the bank’s capital reserves and earnings are strong.
Standard & Poor’s says the ratings could decline if the state’s
economy weakens, but it says North Dakota’s economic prospects are
good right now.
Gov. Jack Dalrymple is chairman of the North Dakota Industrial
Commission. The commission is the bank’s board of directors.
Dalrymple says the report reflects “the growth and prosperity
we are experiencing throughout the state.”
North Dakota has the nation’s lowest unemployment rate of less
than 3 percent. The state treasury is expecting a general fund
surplus next year of $1.6 billion.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Democratic U.S. House
candidate Pam Gulleson says backers of Republican rival Kevin
Cramer are delaying a new federal farm bill.

Gulleson and Cramer debated the farm bill’s provisions yesterday at Prairie Public’s television studios in Fargo. The debate was recorded and will be
broadcast later.

In sports…

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – There will be more on tap than just a

football game when North Dakota State University takes on the

University of South Dakota at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls later this month.

The City Council has approved a special one-day liquor license for the facility that belongs to the Sioux Falls School District and typically is dry.

The USD campus is in Vermillion. The Oct. 20 game is being

played in Sioux Falls in an attempt to increase the school’s

presence in South Dakota’s largest city.

Sioux Falls Sports Authority Director Mike Sullivan saya allowing alcohol sales at the game will increase revenue and help bring in more events in the future.

In world and national news…

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) – Syrian state media and activists now
report 31 deaths and scores of people trapped under rubble after
three suicide bombers detonated their explosives-packed cars near
an officers’ club in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo.

the blasts caused massive destruction. The blasts went off at a

Chamber of Commerce.

DENVER (AP) – President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney
take the gloves off for real tonight as they meet face to face in
the Denver debate.

It’s the first of three this month and it’s seen

competitors in a moment of high-risk theater.

Romney would like to
reverse his recent fortunes while Obama wants to avoid
campaign-altering mistakes.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – A currency slide in Iran has closed the
capital’s main bazaar. Authorities are tightening controls, trying
to halt the fall of Iran’s currency after it hit a record low.

plummeting rial (ree-AL’) and rising prices, blamed partly on
Western sanctions over Tehran’s nuclear program.

JERUSALEM (AP) – Human Rights Watch has issued a report critical

WASHINGTON (AP) – A Senate report has reached unflattering
conclusions about a program the Department of Homeland Security has

The report says
the multibillion-dollar information-sharing program created in the
aftermath of 9/11 improperly collected information about innocent
Americans and produced little valuable intelligence on terrorism.
