Jamestown (CSi) Farm Rescue, founder, Bill Gross, has been recognized as a “MONEY Hero,” stemming from accomplishments in connection with Farm Rescue

The nonprofit organization provides harvesting, planting and haying assistance for farm families, in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota and Iowa.

Gross says, he’s honored to have been chosen as the recipient of the award.

To be considered a MONEY Hero, individuals must show hard work, little financial savvy, and a  desire to help others.

Jamestown (CSi) The Murphy Brothers Exposition has returned to the Stutsman County Fair, midway this year.

Carnival rides include the popular, Century Wheel, Genesis and Zipper.

Fairgoers are also enjoying other rides including the Tea Cups, the Fun Slide, and the Grand Carousel among many others.

Murphy Brothers is the reason the fair is back to its traditional dates around the Fourth of July.

In the early 90’s it began working the Milwaukee Summerfest at the same time, as the Stutsman County Fair.

The fair moved to the second week in July and brought in The Mighty Thomas Carnival for the past 10 years.

This year, Milwaukee Summerfest, is not including a carnival, which allows Murphy Brothers to come back to Jamestown.

The Stutsman County Fair has signed a five-year contract with Murphy Brothers include holding it over the Fourth of July, or the weekend prior to the holiday, through 2018.

The fair runs through Saturday in Jamestown and includes the James River Rodeo, and stockcar races…and hosts the gigantic fireworks display starting about 10-p.m., Saturday.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol is looking for the driver responsible for a fatal hit and run on Highway 52 near Drake Wednesday morning.

Captain Gary Orluck says a man was struck by a maroon or red 2007 Volvo semi-truck as he walking along the highway around 2:30 a.m. to find help.

Orluck says the man and a woman were driving down Highway 14 and didn’t stop at the intersection of Highway 52. Their car went off the road and became submerged in water.

Police know the characteristics of the semi that was headed west because of considerable debris that was left behind on the highway.

     The woman was not injured.

Any information on the semi-truck driver should be relayed to State Radio at 701-328-9921.

Carrington (CSi) The North Dakota Secretary of State’s office has requested the Foster County vote canvassing board to reconvene after the office, and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation finished an investigation into possible illegalities in the June 10, 2014, primary election results.

Foster County State’s Attorney Paul Murphy says the canvassing board had accepted two absentee ballots that may not have been legal, and may have affected the outcome of the Foster County Commission race for nominations to the November 2014 General Election.

The letter from Secretary of State Al Jaeger alleges that two voters submitted absentee ballots, and subsequently the election board found that neither ballot application contained the voters signatures.

For votes on an absentee ballot to count, the board must compare ballot signatures and applications signatures.

If the signatures on the ballot applications are missing, the ballots were properly rejected by the Election Board and sent to the Canvassing Board for final determination

If rejected, the two ballots will not be counted.

Six candidates ran for nomination to two seats on the three member Foster County Commission, with the top four going on to the November, General Election.

The extra ballots moved County Commissioner Paul Staley from a possible recount, with a close race between the fourth and fifth candidates on the ballot.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Farmers in north central North Dakota are surveying damage to crops from heavy weekend rains.

Storms brought as much as 9 inches of rain to the region. Strong winds this week also have created waves in water standing in fields.

Renville County Extension Agent LoAyne Voigt (voyt) says some crops can withstand being flooded, but some like sunflowers and soybeans are more susceptible to being drowned out.

Voigt says excess moisture also creates another concern – crop disease. She says winter wheat right now is especially susceptible to scab disease. And she says farmers can’t spray fungicides if it’s rainy and wet.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Ward County officials are taking steps to safeguard roads after recent heavy rains in north central North Dakota.

Gravel roads in the county will be off-limits to heavy trucks during wet conditions. The Highway Department is working out the details and how they will be enforced.

County Commission Chairman Jerome Gruenberg says the restriction is necessary, or the county will end up having to find money for repairs.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The federal Agriculture Department is providing up to $50 million over the next five years for conservation funding in the Red River Basin in the Upper Midwest.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the money will be distributed through several conservation programs and used to minimize flooding, boost soil health, improve water quality and enhance wildlife habitat in the watershed.

Vilsack and Minnesota Congressman Collin Peterson announced the funding Wednesday in Moorhead, Minnesota. Several members of the Minnesota and North Dakota congressional delegations joined them.

Ducks Unlimited regional conservation services director Roger Smith says the group is happy with conservation efforts anywhere, though the Red River Basin isn’t the group’s highest priority.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot Air Force Base will be getting about one-third of the 1,100 additional personnel the Air Force is dedicating to its nuclear mission.

Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James made the announcement during a visit to the North Dakota base Tuesday.

The military has been working to address problems, including morale and training issues, in the nuclear mission. James says the 1,100 personnel will be moved from other parts of the Air Force to bases with nuclear missions.

The Minot base oversees 150 Minuteman III missiles in silos across 8,500 square miles in northwest and north central North Dakota. It also houses B-52 bombers.

Other additional personnel are going to Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana and F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming.

In world and national news…

JERUSALEM (AP) – East Jerusalem has been the scene of clashes Wednesday between angry Palestinians and Israeli forces — after word came that a Palestinian teen had been abducted and killed. Palestinians accuse Israelis of killing the teen in revenge for the deaths of three Israeli youths whose bodies were found Monday in the West Bank. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is calling on all sides “not to take the law into their own hands.”

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has vetoed legislation that would have required a 72-hour waiting period for women seeking abortions. The Democrat says he vetoed the bill because it didn’t include an exception for rape and incest victims. The measure would’ve made Missouri just the third state to require a 72-hour waiting period, along with South Dakota and Utah. Missouri currently requires a 24-hour wait between when a woman consults a physician and receives an abortion. The state Senate is one vote short of being able to override a veto.

NEW YORK (AP) – This week’s Supreme Court decision in favor of a business that objected to the contraceptive coverage requirement of the new health care law doesn’t mean that a massive wave of companies will stop paying for employees’ birth control. While some business owners say they won’t pay for any forms of contraception, others say they’ll keep paying for most types — but not those that they equate with abortion. And many companies pay for contraception by choice. A survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 85 percent of large employers already covered it before the health care law required them to.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Police say a propane explosion Tuesday on a Philadelphia food truck that critically injured five people was caused by a significant leak. Investigators say a leak from one of the two propane tanks on the lunch truck created a vapor cloud that was ignited by the cooking grills. Authorities say 10 of the 13 victims were taken to hospitals. Five remain in critical condition – the truck owner, her daughter and two other relatives, and a 23-year-old man.

NEW YORK (AP) – An Occupy Wall Street activist who was convicted of one of the few felonies coming out of the protests says she is even more committed to activism after 58 days in jail. Cecily (SEH’-suh-lee) McMillan was released from New York’s Rikers Island today. She’d been convicted in May of assaulting a police officer and could have been sent to prison for seven years. But even some of the jurors who convicted her asked for leniency.
