The Big Sit! is an annual, international, noncompetitive birding event hosted by Bird Watcher’s Digest and founded by the New Haven (CT) Bird Club.
The Big Sit! has been adopted by the National Wildlife Refuge System as part of National Wildlife Refuge Week celebrations.
The Arrowwood NWR is just one of over 550 National Wildlife Refuges spread throughout the country.

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce notes an error in a recent flyer, concerning ticket prices for the Chamber’s, Farmer’s Appreciation Banquet.
Spokesperson Lisa Hicks says, the flyer mistakenly listed the ticket price as $20. However due to an error, the actual ticket price is $10.
Subsequent publications will list the correct price.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Three higher education institutions in North
Dakota are working on big projects.
Jamestown College on Thursday broke ground for a $1.7 million
facility in Fargo for its new doctoral program in physical therapy.
President Robert Badal says Fargo is a regional health care hub and
students will be able to get the clinical experiences they need
during the three-year program.
Also in Fargo, North Dakota State University has announced the
creation of the NDSU School of Music. The Board of Higher Education
approved the school last week.
In the western part of the state, the Williston State College
Foundation on Thursday helped break ground for a 74-unit housing
project for people who provide so-called essential community
services, including employees at the college, at law enforcement
agencies and at medical facilities.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A Tennessee woman has been sentenced to
10 years in prison for flying to North Dakota to have sex with a
15-year-old boy.
Cynthia Kusy, of Knoxville, Tenn., was sentenced on convictions
for sexually assaulting a minor and luring a minor over the
Internet.
She’ll be on supervised probation for five years after her prison
term.
Authorities say Kusy met the boy while playing an online
computer game, and in April 2011 flew to Grand Forks and rented a
motel room, where she gave the boy beer and had sex with him over
three days.
A week later she drove to Grand Forks, picked up the
boy and took him to Knoxville without telling his mother.
Kusy is married and has a teenage son.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The near white-out conditions Grand
Forks residents endured this week has an upside: The county’s burn
ban is lifted.
Sheriff Bob Rost announced the lift Friday. He says rural fire
chiefs have reported that enough precipitation has fallen to lift
the ban.
Rost warns that people still need to monitor any fires and be
prepared to put out fires if they start to get out of control.
The county is one of several to implement burning bans over the
past few weeks as the ongoing drought created ideal conditions for
fire to spread.
Pembina and Nelson counties lifted their burning bans Thursday.
The area was hit by more than 4 inches of snow in some spots late Wednesday and early Thursday.
KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) – Another landslide has hampered a highway
reconstruction project in western North Dakota.
Last year, the state Transportation Department spent $4.3
million to twice repair landslide damage that shut down state
Highway 22 north of Killdeer.
The highway was torn up this past spring for a 7.5-mile, $18.3 million upgrade, but another landslide in September has added about $500,000 to the cost.
Job superintendent Mike Schrinersays crews are tearing out about a mile of new construction and moving the road east 60 feet from the area
that’s sliding. He says his company will finish the job next year.
MEDORA, N.D. (AP) – Theodore Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch in
western North Dakota has been added to the National Register of
Historic Places.
The National Register is the federal government’s list of
properties it considers worthy of recognition and preservation.
The Forest Service says the listing includes about 200 acres of land in
Theodore Roosevelt National Park that can’t be developed, and also
about 4,400 acres of surrounding Greater Elkhorn Ranchlands where
development is not banned.
Before he became president, Roosevelt spent more than three
years in the North Dakota Badlands in the 1880s, ranching and
hunting on land that government agencies and conservation groups
have hailed as the “cradle of conservation.”
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s workers’ compensation
agency is looking for new members for its board of directors.
The terms of six of the 11 directors are ending in December.
The board oversees the operation of North Dakota’s Workforce
Safety and Insurance agency, and makes recommendations to the
governor.
North Dakota Chamber of Commerce President Andy Peterson says
the new jobs are important to the state’s businesses and its
workers.
Workforce Safety and Insurance provides insurance coverage for
employees who are injured on the job.
It pays for medical expenses, rehabilitation and training for injured workers.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – An addition to the Cass County Courthouse in
Fargo is ready after more than a decade of planning, legal battles
and construction setbacks.
Officials scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday for the
$14.7 million, 72,000-square-foot addition.
It will house county administrative offices, information technology, commission offices and chambers, courtrooms, district court offices and an inmate holding area.
Ground was broken for the addition in 2010, but planning began
nine years earlier. It was hampered by a legal battle centering
around an effort to try to save the old county jail.
When construction started, it was hampered by water and asbestos
problems.
Officials tell The Forum newspaper that despite legal and
construction setbacks, the project came in on budget. County
employees are expected to begin moving in to the facility next
week.
DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – The cities of Dickinson and Minot are
using a Portland, Ore., architecture firm to create master plans
for their downtown areas.
Dickinson City Administrator Shawn Kessel says a healthy
downtown is the core of every successful community.
V3 Studio Architecture uses computer animation and photographs to create visions of what the downtowns would look like with proposed buildings.
In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) – Today’s jobs report comes as a surprise to
economists who were expecting to see the nation’s jobless rate tick
up. But one economist says it’s consistent with recent data
suggesting the economy is gaining momentum.
The Labor Department says unemployment fell to 7.8 percent in September as the number of people employed soared by 873,000. However, the number of people with part-time jobs who wanted full-time work rose 7.5 percent to 8.6 million.
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) – Both President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney
are using Friday’s jobs report to bolster their campaign arguments.
The news that the nation’s unemployment rate fell below 8 percent
for the first time in nearly four years comes as a boost to the
president, who called it a sign that the economy is “moving
forward again.”
Romney countered that the rate is low in part because some people have quit looking for work.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) – Turkey’s prime minister is renewing his
call to Syria not to challenge Turkey’s resolve.
The warning comes after another exchange of artillery and mortar fire along the country’s shared border today.
The situation escalated Wednesday, when a Syrian mortar hit a border town in Turkey killing five civilians. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (REH’-jehp TY’-ihp UR’-doh-wahn) says testing Turkey’s determination “would be a
grave mistake,” adding: “We are not bluffing.”
LONDON (AP) – Britain’s High Court has ruled that a radical
preacher and four other terror suspects can be extradited from
Britain to the United States immediately.
Abu Hamza al-Masri (AH’-boo HAHM’-zuh ahl MAHZ’-ree) is wanted in the U.S. on charges that include conspiring to set up a terrorist training camp in
Oregon and helping abduct 16 hostages, two of them American
tourists, in Yemen in 1998.
The BBC reports that a police convoy carrying al-Masri has left the prison where he’s been held en route to a handover with U.S. Marshals.
ATLANTA (AP) – Baseball’s first-ever game between two wild card
teams is scheduled to begin in Atlanta a little later Friday afternoon (4:07 p.m. Central). (Games can be seen on CSi Cable 30 TBS).
The Braves send Kris Medlen to the home mound to face Kyle Lohse (lohsh) and the St. Louis Cardinals.
The winner advances to play the NL East Champion Washington
Nationals on Sunday.
This evening, the Texas Rangers host the Baltimore Orioles in the AL wild card matchup.
