Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) —Two early Saturday morning (Oct 6, 2012) accidents on I-94 were blamed on black ice on the surface of railroad overpasses.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, at about 2:27 a.m. a pickup driven by 50 year old Jennifer Maul of Watford City was eastbound on I-94, 37 miles west of Jamestown, when her vehicle went out of control and went into the ditch and over turned.
Maul was injured along with passengers, 14 year old Ahna Klassen, and 8 year old Conner Maul.
Jennifer and Ahna were wearing seatbelts. It was not know if Conner was using a safety restraint.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) – Authorities have released the name of a
Moorhead, Minnesota woman who died after she fell from an overpass
onto Interstate 94 and was struck by at least one vehicle.
She is identified as 55-year-old Kristi Garden.
The Minnesota State Patrol says it appears Garden may have
jumped from the overpass in south Moorhead onto the westbound lanes
of I-94. She was struck by a sport utility vehicle driven by a
25-year-old Fargo man.
The incident happened about 8:10 p.m. Saturday, shortly after
authorities received reports of a woman running in and out of
traffic on 34th Street South near I-94.
The westbound lanes of I-94 were closed temporarily Saturday evening and traffic rerouted.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 20-year-old man is in custody after
allegedly crashing his pickup truck into a pond while taking a
joyride on a Fargo golf course.
Authorities were called to the Fargo Country Club shortly after
midnight Saturday and found the truck submerged in the water
hazard.
Authorities pulled the pickup from the water and used sonar
to check the rest of the pond for the driver.
The suspect was found nearby and arrested on several charges
including driving under the influence and giving false information
to police.
TIOGA, N.D. (AP) – Weekend crashes in northwest North Dakota left two people dead and four others injured.
The Highway Patrol says one crash happened late Saturday on
state Highway 40 near Tioga, and the other late Sunday on U.S.
Highway 85 near Alexander. Both crashes involved pickup trucks
colliding.
Thirty-three-year-old Brent Gardner of Grantsville, Utah, died
in the first crash. Forty-three-year-old Jason Smith of Murrieta,
Calif., died in the other.
A man from Colorado was injured in the Saturday crash. Two Texas
residents and a Nevada man were injured in the Sunday crash.
The crashes happened in western North Dakota’s oil patch, where
people from around the country are working.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a convicted felon who walked away from a Mandan halfway house last month has been arrested in Fort Yates.
Dustin Hart is charged in federal court with escape. He’s
scheduled to be arraigned later this week.
Staff members at the halfway house discovered that Hart was
missing after they were alerted to the fact he had tampered with
his GPS monitor on the afternoon of Sept. 22.
Hart had been convicted in 2009 of possession of a firearm by a
person convicted of domestic violence. He was sentenced to nearly
three years in prison.
Hart was moved to the halfway house on June 14 and was scheduled
to be released on Dec. 24.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man says he will plead
guilty on a drug charge.
Rodney Kirk faces a 10-year minimum mandatory sentence on a
federal charge of possession with intent to distribute a controlled
substance.
Authorities say officers found 140 grams of pure methamphetamine
during an October 2011 of Kirk’s residence in Williston.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
A change of plea hearing is scheduled October 16th in Bismarck.
FORMAN, N.D. (AP) – A county prosecutor in southeastern North
Dakota is charging many drunken driving offenders with reckless
driving, instead of driving under the influence.
Sargent County State’s Attorney Lyle Bopp says he wants to give
people a second chance.
He says he doesn’t give the same break to repeat offenders and people who have a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.15 percent.
The legal limit for DUI in North Dakota is 0.08 percent.
Bopp says there isn’t much public transportation in Sargent
County, and “people need to get to work.”
The penalties for drunken driving and reckless driving are about the
same. But a reckless driving charge has less effect on insurance
rates.
A Highway Patrol spokesman says the agency isn’t happy about the
practice.
DENVER (AP) – CenturyLink and the union representing 13,000
workers in 13 states in the West and Midwest have failed to reach a
contract agreement, but have signed onto a day-to-day extension of
the expired pact.
The Communications Workers of America made the announcement
after the existing labor contract expired at 11:59 p.m. Saturday.
CWA spokesman Al Kogler said in a statement that negotiations will
continue and workers will remain on the job during the extension.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota fund that helps finance
housing projects now has more than $11 million.
The incentive fund offers state tax breaks to contributors. For
every dollar they put in, they owe a dollar less in state income
tax.
This month, Gate City Bank put $1.25 million into the fund. The
bank wants most of the money used for housing projects in
Williston, Devils Lake and Bowman.
The biggest contributors to the fund have been energy companies and banks.
More than 300 individuals have also put money into the fund. It
provides cheap financing for developers of multi-family housing
projects.
The Legislature created the fund as a way to help alleviate a
housing shortage in western North Dakota’s oil-producing region.
BEACH, N.D. (AP) – Residents of the western North Dakota town of
Beach say they’re looking forward to hearing fewer train horns in
town.
The city is establishing a “quiet zone” for railroads next
spring. Passing trains won’t be required to sound their horns
unless there is an emergency.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The state of North Dakota is supporting
arguments by four western counties that they have the right to
build roads along section lines.
A section line marks off a square mile of land. Section line
roads could be used for oil companies to get to drilling locations.
Billings, Golden Valley, McKenzie and Slope counties are suing
the federal government, claiming they have the right to build roads
along section lines.
Now the state has made similar claims in its own federal lawsuit.
Environmentalists worry the lawsuits could allow more oil
drilling in the Little Missouri grasslands in western North Dakota.
DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota high school sophomores now
may take courses for college credit while they’re still in high
school.
North Dakota’s Board of Higher Education has extended
“dual-credit” courses to sophomores. Before, only juniors and
seniors could take dual credits.
Dickinson High School counselor Maxine Hauck says the credits
are usually good at any college in North Dakota’s university
system.
But Hauck says the classes may count only toward the total
number of hours a student needs to graduate. A dual credit may not
substitute for a specific college class.
WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota National Guard soldiers who
served a year in the Middle East were honored Sunday.
The Guard held a “Freedom Salute” Sunday afternoon for the 160
members of the 188th Engineer Company.
The unit is based in Wahpeton and Oakes in southeastern North Dakota.
The soldiers arrived home last August after a year of duty in Kuwait.
The soldiers are from nearly 70 communities across North Dakota
and into Minnesota.
They did about 160 construction projects during their time on active duty, doing work valued at more than $2.2 million.
A number of North Dakota dignitaries attended Sunday’s ceremony,
including U.S. Sen. John Hoeven, Gov. Jack Dalrymple and U.S. Rep.
Rick Berg.
Guard commander David Sprynczynatyk (SPRIN’-suh-NAH’-tik) also attended.
WASHINGTON (AP) – For critical Senate races, Republicans are
turning to the playbook that served them so well in the 2010
elections.
They’re saturating the airwaves with political ads
detailing the perils of “Obamacare” and the nation’s growing
debt.
Democrats have added Medicare to the equation.
They’re trying to make the case that revamping the government health care program for older people would virtually destroy it.
As the November 6th election fast approaches, political
strategists and ad writers are pointing to what they believe this
year’s vote is about: defending Medicare, creating jobs and
standing up to powerful interest, whether it’s Big Oil, big banks
or big Washington.
Each state has distinct differences that shape the messages of
each race.

Colorado finished last in the NL West this year and set a
franchise record for losses while going 64-98.
Tracy was promoted from bench coach to manager in May 2009. He
was voted the NL Manager of the Year that season after guiding
Colorado into the playoffs.
The Rockies went 294-308 under Tracy.

T25-AP POLL
NEW YORK) – A bye week didn’t hurt Alabama’s status as the top
college football team in the country. The Crimson Tide are a
unanimous No. 1 in the AP poll for a second straight week and
Oregon continues its ride at No. 2.
South Carolina moves up from six to three after beating Georgia,
which drops from fifth to 14th.
Florida vaults up six places to No. 4 following a victory over
LSU, which falls from fourth to ninth.
West Virginia advances three spots to No. 5 after outscoring a
Texas team that falls from 11th to 15th.
Kansas State, Notre Dame and Ohio State are six through eight
and Oregon State rounds out at the top 10.
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) – Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth grabbed
the checkered flag at Talladega Superspeedway, after a last-lap
crash eliminated race leader Tony Stewart. Kenseth avoided a 25-car
pileup.
Stewart had no drafting partner and was looking for help when he
misjudged how much room he had and turned down in front of Michael
Waltrip.
Waltrip hooked Stewart’s bumper, triggering a massive accident
that sent Stewart’s car sailing on its side over the field. NASCAR
threw the caution flag and Kenseth coasted to the victory.
Jeff Gordon finished second and Kyle Busch was third.

NHL-LABOR
NEW YORK (AP) – The NHL and the players’ association are
expected to resume labor negotiations this week in New York.
The sides are likely to meet Wednesday and Thursday in New York,
a union spokesman told The Associated Press in an email. The plans
and the agenda are expected to be worked out Monday.
Officials on both sides were in contact over the weekend,
leading to the meetings.
The lockout is entering its fourth week. The NHL canceled the
first two weeks of the regular season Thursday, wiping out 82 games
from Oct. 11-24.
In world and national news….
WASHINGTON (AP) – Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney
says the U.S. should take a more assertive role in Syria, put
conditions on aid to Egypt and tighten sanctions on Iran.
Romney plans to attack President Barack Obama’s foreign policy when Romney addresses the Virginia Military Institute today. The Obama campaign says Romney has been “an unmitigated disaster on foreign policy
every time he sticks his toe in the foreign policy waters.”
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Romney campaign says President Barack
Obama isn’t going to have the same advantage among early voters as
he did in the 2008 election.
Romney campaign political director Rich Beeson says this time in North Carolina, “Republicans havethe lead” in early voting.
The United States Elections Project at George Mason University says in Florida, Republicans also favor Democrats right now. But Democrats do have a big lead in Iowa, as they did in the past two presidential elections.
BEIRUT (AP) – The leader of Syria’s main opposition group says
he would not oppose a role for members of President Bashar Assad’s
ruling Baath party in the country’s political future, as long as
they did not participate in killings during the uprising.
The comments by the head of the Syrian National Council appear to be a
softening of the opposition’s stance that it will accept nothing
less than the complete removal of the Assad regime and the
president’s inner circle.
GENEVA (AP) – The outgoing head of the Red Cross delegation in
Afghanistan says civilians are in greater danger with less hope for
peace than when he arrived on his job seven years ago.
Reto Stocker says he’s “filled with concern” because suffering and hardship
have increased among ordinary Afghans while their “hope for the
future has been steadily declining.”
DECATUR, Ga. (AP) – A woman accused of conspiring with her
former boss to kill her husband is scheduled for arraignment this
morning in a court in suburban Atlanta.
“Rusty” Sneiderman was slain moments after dropping off the couple’s son at preschool in November 2010. Andrea Sneiderman has repeatedly denied knowing anything about the shooting or about having an affair with former
boss Hemy Neuman, who was found guilty but mentally ill in the
shooting and was sentenced to life in prison.
