earlier this week.

FAIRMOUNT, N.D. (AP) – Richland County Sheriff Larry Leshovsky
(luh-SHEHV’-skee) says a high school student in Fairmount who shot
himself in a classroom in an apparent suicide attempt is expected
to recover.
Authorities aren’t identifying the freshman boy who shot himself
in front of classmates Thursday. The Breckenridge, Minn., hospital
he was taken to is not releasing his condition.

Classes were called off after the Thursday morning incident. The
K-12 school with about 110 students was bringing in extra
counselors and the sheriff’s office was putting a deputy on patrol
there as school resumed Friday.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A man charged in what authorities say
is a synthetic drug ring that led to the overdose deaths of two
teenagers has pleaded guilty in federal court in Fargo.
22-year-old former University of North Dakota student Peter Hoistad
is the sixth person to reach a plea agreement with prosecutors in
the case.
Investigators say the ring manufactured synthetic drugs that led
to the two deaths and the hospitalization of several other people
in Grand Forks in June.
Hoistad pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge and to
distributing illegal drugs.

Prosecutors dropped a charge that the
drugs resulted in injury and death, which could have landed Hoistad
in prison for life. He faces up to 30 years in prison when he is
sentenced Jan. 3.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A longtime employee of a North Dakota
credit union says she will plead guilty to stealing more than
$130,000 from members.
Georgia Schwartz, of Glen Ullin, is charged in federal court
with embezzlement and misapplication from a credit union, and false
entries.
Court document show that the money was taken over a 24-year
period from the Glen Ullin Credit Union, now known as the Western
Cooperative Credit Union.
Authorities say Schwartz paid back some of the money she took
from the accounts.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. A
plea agreement calls for Schwartz to pay back the money and
recommends a sentence below the federal guideline range.
Sentencing is set for Dec. 19.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota assistant attorney general
has a frightening example of the effects of synthetic drug use.
Julie Lawyer played a recording of a 911 emergency call to a
legislative committee that’s looking at the state’s laws against
synthetic drugs.
The 17-year-old Larimore girl had been to a Grafton home and had
taken two “hits” from a pipe containing synthetic marijuana.
She had a bad reaction, and when she was out driving, she called
911. When the operator asked what was wrong, the girl could only
scream incoherently.
Lawyer says the call makes the hair on the back of her neck
stand on end.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota wildlife officials are cautioning motorists to beware of deer, as this is the time of year

Agency director.
Her remarks came during a Chamber of Commerce forum Thursday
night with Republican opponent Rick Berg. It focused on energy and
health care issues.
A recent poll showed Heitkamp and Berg in a dead heat.
Berg said a broader energy policy that includes oil and coal
development will help provide jobs and “ignite America’s fires
again.”
Heitkamp has said Obama is hostile to oil and coal development.
She said Thursday she’d tell the president he is “wrong on energy
and headed in the wrong direction.”
She said Obama needs to replace Energy Secretary Steven Chu and
EPA administrator Lisa Jackson.

NEW YORK (AP) – The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are

the ninth to give the Nats a dramatic 2-1 victory over St. Louis to

NHL-LABOR
NEW YORK (AP) – NHL arenas are dark, and now so are the
negotiating rooms.
Hockey’s opening day came and went Thursday with no games and no
reason to be optimistic that players will be hitting the ice
anytime soon.
The league and the union were back at the bargaining table,
hours before pucks were supposed to drop to open the regular
season, but again the sides didn’t even address the core economic
differences at the center of the lockout that has already lasted 26
days. There is no end in sight.

In world and national news…

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Vice President Joe Biden played the
aggressor in his debate with Republican Paul Ryan as the two
exchanged pointed comments on the economy, social policy and
America’s place in the world.

Now it’s up to the main players with 25 days to the election. President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney have two debates left. Romney plans to be in Virginia today and head on to Ohio.

WASHINGTON (AP) – An Associated Press review of documents finds
that Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan has sought an
expansion of food stamps, stimulus money, federally guaranteed
business loans and other benefits for his Wisconsin constituents.
Such requests are at odds with Ryan’s public persona as a
small-government advocate and a fiscal conservative and critic of
federal handouts.

MIAMI (AP) – The collapsed parking garage at Miami Dade

OSLO, Norway (AP) – The European Union has been cited for
playing a “stabilizing part” in transforming the once torn
continent. The EU gets the Nobel Peace Prize for that effort.

by the conviction that ever-closer economic ties would make war
less likely.

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’ll cost another penny to mail a letter next year.

The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service said Thursday that it will raise postage rates on Jan. 27, including a 1-cent increase in the cost of first-class mail to 46 cents.

It also will introduce a new global “forever” stamp, allowing customers to mail first-class letters anywhere in the world for one set price of $1.10. Currently, the prices vary depending on the international destination, with letters to Canada and Mexico costing 85 cents.

The mail agency also will increase rates on its shipping services, such as priority mail, by an average of 4 percent.
