Jamestown (CSi) James River Library System, Development Director, Bill Kennedy says one of the most frequently asked questions about the new library is whether it will raise property taxes. The answer is no. The new library will be paid for through a 1/4% county wide sales tax.
Kennedy points out that Jamestown Public Schools reports, the end of the 1% school sales tax and 21 mill property tax at the end of 2014.
He says the sales tax and property tax levy, have been paid, for the $25,000,000 in debt used to construct the new high school and remodel of the middle school, as approved by voters in 2001.
The result of the school property tax being retired is a reduction of approximately $95 in property taxes for a $100,000 home in the school district.
The retirement of the sales tax will result in a saving of approximately $135 to the average family according to the state tax office.
The new library will add $33.75 a year in sales tax to the average county family. This will pay for the estimated $9,000,000 renovation of Alfred Dickey and construction of the addition.
In 2015 the average Stutsman County family will see a net tax reduction.

An autopsy concluded the boy died from chronic starvation due to untreated juvenile appetite disorder. Jensen’s attorney has said she did not deliberately starve the boy.
Jensen will be evaluated next month at the State Hospital in Jamestown. Her defense also could ask for its own psychiatric evaluation.
Judge Gary Lee has scheduled a status conference for Nov. 24.
Jensen could face life in prison if convicted on the murder charge.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A study indicates that putting more criminals behind bars has not led to a big drop in North Dakota’s crime rate.
The study by the Pew Charitable Trusts found that the state over the last 10 years has seen a 175 percent increase in the number of people being jailed, but only an 18 percent drop in the crime rate over that span.
The national study was released to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1994 Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. It aimed to reduce crime in part by stiffening sentencing requirements for several categories of crime.
Pew project manager Adam Gelb says the study shows the belief that harsher sentences deter crime is a myth.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The Ward County Historical Society Pioneer Village Museum in Minot is thriving, three years after being swamped by Souris River floodwaters.

Jamestown (Csi ) The University of Jamestown first half offensive with 34 points, carried the Jimmies to a 40-20 vwin over new NSAA football member Waldorf College, at Taylor Stadium’s, Rollie Greeno Field.
The win over the Warriors Saturday, was the Jimmie football squad’s first of the season.
VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – The Valley City State University football team delivered head
football coach Dennis McCulloch his 100th career win on Saturday, going on the road
and taking down the Dickinson State Blue Hawks, 33-21.
Valley City State improves to 3-1 on the season. McCulloch, who is in his 18th
season as head coach at VCSU, sees his career record improve to 100-76. During his
tenure, the Vikings have won five conference championships and he has won five
conference coach of the year awards.
The milestone win did not come easy Saturday for the Vikings, as they fell behind
7-0 after the first quarter. Facing a stiff wind, VCSU’s passing offense was shut
down for the first 15 minutes. Going with the wind in the second quarter, the
Vikings rallied with 14 points on a touchdown run by Ian Keller and a touchdown
catch by tight end Jake Miller.
Kurtis Walls hit Antoine Griffin for a 14-yard score in the third quarter, capping a
streak of 20 straight points by the Vikings and putting them up 20-7.
Dickinson would rally and the teams traded scores before the Blue Hawks cut the
Viking lead to 26-21 with five minutes left. The Vikings faced a fourth-and-three on
the Blue Hawk 10-yard line with 1:30 remaining, and elected to go for it instead of
kicking a field goal. The gamble paid off as Walls hit Griffin for his third
touchdown of the day, which sealed the 33-21 non-conference win.
Walls completed just 13 passes for 126 yards, but he made the most of those
completions by hooking up with receivers on four touchdowns. Griffin was on the
receiving end of three touchdowns, and caught five passes for 65 yards. Zach Johnson
had four catches for 32 yards, and Jake Miller caught two passes, including a
second-quarter touchdown.
Running back Ian Keller had his heaviest workload of the season, carrying the ball a
career-high 29 times for 90 yards and a touchdown. Walls gained 59 yards on the
ground on six carries, and Trevor Goerts had six carries for 19 yards.
Linebacker Nick McBeain had his second straight huge defensive game, tallying 20
total tackles and two tackles for loss. That follows up a 19-tackle performance last
week at Dakota State.
Defensive back Andre Peppers had his best game as a Viking by making 12 tackles,
forcing and recovering a fumble, intercepting a pass and breaking up another pass.
Linebacker Ethen Preston added 14 tackles.
Up next: VCSU (3-1, 1-0 NSAA) re-enters conference play next Saturday with a road
game at University of Jamestown. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27 in
Jamestown. The two teams will be playing for the Paint Bucket Trophy, which VCSU
currently holds after a 31-7 victory over the Jimmies on Aug. 28. Saturday is also
Jamestown’s homecoming game.

Patterson is scheduled for trial in October on charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter and aggravated assault in the October 2013 death of Tyrese Ruffin.
Patterson was released last year on those charges after his father posted a $750,000 bond. He was arrested again in June, and his bond was raised after prosecutors said he attacked the boy’s mother that month.
