MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) – A coroner in Minnesota has ruled as a homicide the death of the North Dakota State University student whose body was found this week.

The Ramsey County medical examiner’s office on Thursday determined that 18-year-old Thomas Bearson, of Sartell, Minnesota, died as the “result of homicidal violence.”

Bearson’s remains were found Tuesday outside a recreational vehicle store in south Moorhead. He was last seen at a party Saturday in Fargo.
BEARSONSHOESPHONEPolice in Moorhead are asking for the public’s help to locate Bearson’s cellphone and a shoe. Police described the missing items as a white Nike Air Jordan left tennis shoe size 9 1/2 and a silver iPhone 5.

People with information are asked to call the Red River Regional Dispatch Center at 701-451-7660.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Police in north-central Minnesota have recovered a body from the Mouse River.

The state medical examiner identified the man on Thursday as 54-year-old Ronnie Rosenthal of Minot. Police say there was nothing suspicious found during the autopsy and his death was classified as a drowning.

Police say authorities responded after a kayaker reported the body on Wednesday. They say there were no signs of foul play.

Police didn’t say if Rosenthal had been reported missing or how he drowned.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – A 38-year-old man is in custody in Dickinson after allegedly making a telephone call that prompted a lockdown of area schools.

Police say a caller to a national crisis hotline Thursday made reference to a mass homicide, and state and federal authorities traced the call to a prepaid cellphone in south Dickinson.

Police did not immediately name the suspect, who they say did not make a specific threat to any people or place.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – A man accused of sexually abusing a 5-month-old girl is facing life in prison after changing his plea during his trial in Dickinson.

Dan Pruett on Thursday entered Alford pleas to charges of gross sexual imposition and aggravated assault in the alleged November 2013 incident. Pruett is in his mid-40’s.

An Alford plea is one in which a defendant acknowledges there was sufficient evidence for conviction but does not admit guilt.

Prosecutors said the infant suffered marks and bruises all over her body. Jurors saw a videotaped interview in which Pruett told authorities he had tried to perform CPR on the child after waking up and finding her limp.

The child’s father testified she was on life support after the attack but is now doing well.

GRAND FORKS AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. (AP) – Forty-eight traffic control airmen at the Grand Forks Air Force Base have been reprimanded following an investigation into allegations of misconduct on proficiency testing.

Base officials say the airmen of the 319th Operations Support Squadron have been disciplined in different ways. Some have received “letters of counseling, letters of reprimand and non-judicial punishment, to include demotion actions.”

Officials say the investigation began after it was discovered that an individual had images of test materials and shared them with others.

NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) – A 6-year-old New Town boy who doesn’t want to stand with his classmates during the Pledge of Allegiance is now being allowed to sit.

Parents Jesse Moore and Kristina Leiffer earlier enlisted the help of a national atheist group to fight the school district. The American Humanist Association’s Appignani Humanist Legal Center sent a letter to school officials, saying that coercing a student to stand for the pledge infringes on his or her constitutional rights.

School district spokeswoman Meredith Vukelic sent a letter to the group saying the district obtained legal advice and has reversed its earlier position.

Moore says he’s satisfied with the school district’s response but still thinks his son is owed an apology.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Democrats have asked the state’s attorney general to stop the University System from releasing to an advertising agency the contact information of college students.

But Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says the system will be responding to the request from Odney Advertising because the directory is considered a public record.

Democratic Party chairman Bob Valeu (vah-LOU’) had asked Stenehjem to issue a cease and desist order against the Bismarck-based ad agency. Valeu says that data should be off limits.

Stenehjem says the system regularly receives requests for this type of information and it’s routinely provided. He says students are given the opportunity to opt out of the practice of releasing directory records.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – The former operations administrator of the regional jail in Devils Lake has filed a complaint with the state over her firing.

Denny Deegan makes several allegations in her complaint to the Department of Labor and Human Rights, including that she faced discrimination because of her gender and was subjected to a hostile work environment.

Deegan also says she was fired while on medical leave, and in retaliation for her firing of a male captain at the jail.

The Lake Region Law Enforcement Center Board fired Deegan on August 20th, after months of controversy. Problems included staff shortages, resignations and a male officer allegedly having sexual contact with a female inmate.

Board Chairman Craig Stromme declined immediate comment on Deegan’s complaint, saying he didn’t know the details.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – The oil industry’s leading trade group has adopted new standards for testing and classifying crude shipped by rail after prior shipments were misclassified, including a train that derailed in Canada and killed 47 people.

As with earlier orders from the federal government, the standards unveiled Thursday left it to companies to decide how often to test crude in order to gauge its danger.

The American Petroleum Institute says the standards were crafted in cooperation with regulators and the rail industry.

Shipping oil by rail has become far more common as domestic drilling booms in North Dakota, Montana, Texas, Colorado and other states.

In July 2013, a crude train from North Dakota crude derailed and exploded in Lac-Megantic, Quebec killing 47. Regulators said the shipment had been misclassified as posing a low risk.

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – Several North Dakota legislators say the rapidly growing communities in the state’s western oil patch need financial relief as soon as possible.

The legislators spoke on a panel Thursday at the annual meeting of the North Dakota Petroleum Council.

Infrastructure in North Dakota’s oil patch has been overwhelmed by development in recent years. Today the area is characterized by ubiquitous construction projects, dust, constant roadwork and heavy truck traffic.

North Dakota Republicans earlier this month unveiled a one-time $800 million “surge funding” plan to help out oil patch communities.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The Bismarck Civic Center is officially now known as the Bismarck Event Center.

The  City Commission approved the name change this week. The goal is to better reflect the multiple uses of the complex, from conventions to concerts.

Commissioners also awarded South Dakota-based Daktronics Inc. the $241,000 bid for a second marquee near the Fifth Street entrance.

The center is undergoing a $27 million expansion.

NEW YORK (AP) – Derek Jeter has gone out a winner in his final game at Yankee Stadium, and he had a lot to do with the victory.

The Yankees blew a 5-2 lead in the ninth before Jeter delivered a walkoff single in the bottom half to lift the Bombers past Baltimore 6-5. Yankees players rushed out to engulf him as former teammates such as Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte, Tino Martinez and Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre lined up near the New York dugout waiting to greet Jeter. He went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored, giving him 1,310 runs batted in and 1,923 runs scored in his 20-year career.

DETROIT (AP) – Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez homered as the Detroit Tigers moved closer to another AL Central title with a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins last night. Martinez hit a two-run homer in the first. Cabrera added a solo shot in the fourth. Max Scherzer (SHUR’-zur) allowed two runs and five hits.

The Tigers remain two games ahead of the Kansas City Royals, who reduced their magic number to one for clinching a playoff berth by downing the White Sox 6-3 in Chicago.

Seattle avoided elimination from the AL wild-card races as Logan Morrison hit a three-run homer and a solo shot in a 7-5 win at Toronto. Mike Zunino also hit a solo homer for the Mariners, who are two games behind Oakland for the final AL wild-card berth with three games remaining.

The Athletics were 2-1 losers in Texas

MLB-TWINS-HUGHES…

DETROIT (AP) – Minnesota right-hander Phil Hughes has turned down a chance to pitch again this weekend, even though one more out would have earned him a $500,000 bonus.  Hughes’ half-million-dollar bonus kicks in if he reaches 210 innings this year.  However, he is set to finish with 209 2/3 after a rain delay forced him out of his final scheduled start Wednesday.

While the Twins are willing to let Hughes pitch again, he says he doesn’t think it would be right since the team isn’t in the playoff hunt.

Hughes is 16-10 with a 3.52 ERA.

RICE VIDEO…

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) – There’s another twist in the NFL’s handling of the Ray Rice video

A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press the video of Rice punching his fiancee inside a casino elevator was sent to NFL headquarters to the attention of league security chief Jeffrey Miller in April. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to release details of the case. He said he doesn’t know if Miller ever saw the DVD or opened the package. His only communication with the NFL was a 12-second voicemail on April 9 from league offices confirming receipt of the package, in which a woman says, “You’re right. It’s terrible.”

The NFL has repeatedly said no one with the league saw the violent images until TMZ Sports released the video earlier this month. Miller said Thursday through an NFL spokesman that he never received the video. But the official said no one from the NFL ever asked him for the inside-elevator video.

STEWART…

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Tony Stewart says the crash that killed 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. on a dirt track in upstate New York was “100 percent” an accident.

Stewart spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday from his home in Huntersville, North Carolina. It was his first interview since a grand jury decided against charging the NASCAR star in Ward’s death. Stewart could still face a civil lawsuit.

Stewart says during his three-week hiatus from racing after the crash, he stayed in seclusion at his other home in Indiana and didn’t want to get out of bed or even leave his room. He asked for professional help to deal with his grief.

Stewart said: “I know 100 percent in my heart and in my mind that I did not do anything wrong. This was 100 percent an accident.”

Davis pitched a two-hit shutout against a team from Nashville at the LLWS last month.

In world and national news…

BEIRUT (AP) – U.S.-led coalition warplanes continue to press the campaign against Islamic State group positions in eastern Syria, especially oil installations extremists make money from, to the tune of up to $2 million a day. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says strikes also targeted the headquarters of the Islamic State group in the town of Mayadeen.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) – Denmark is entering the fray with F-16 fighter jets earmarked for airstrikes against the Islamic State group in Iraq. A parliamentary vote today is considered a formality. Britain, meanwhile, continues to debate participation and is expected to join the coalition.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The head of the FBI says the agency believes it has unmasked the British-accented man in the videos depicting the beheadings of two American journalists and a British aid worker. Director James Comey isn’t naming names, nor is he saying whether the U.S. believes the man actually carried out the killings.

BERLIN (AP) – With winter approaching, critical natural gas supplies for Ukraine and beyond are the focus of talks between Kiev and Russia about their long-standing dispute. The dispute, part of a wider conflict over Ukraine’s relations with Russia and the West, involves the price of Russian gas supplies and Kiev’s historic gas debts. Today’s meeting in Berlin between the Russian and Ukrainian energy ministers comes more than three months after Moscow cut off gas supplies to Kiev.

BEIJING (AP) – Ten schoolchildren have been killed in southern China, including six who died in a stampede at a primary school and four who were stabbed to death on their way to another school. The official Xinhua (shihn-wah) News Agency says it’s not clear what caused the stampede and police are searching for a suspect in the stabbings. The stampede injured 22, including two with critical injuries.
