The North Dakota Department of Transportation Thursday, issued a Travel Alert due to high wind conditions.
The strong winds may cause difficult driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles such as semis, trucks, busses and SUVs.
Motorists are advised to use caution when meeting and passing vehicles as well as driving through strong wind gusts.
A Travel Alert means motorists can still travel but may encounter areas of challenging driving conditions on roadways.
All travelers are encouraged to monitor road conditions, reduce traffic speeds as weather conditions occur and use caution while traveling.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Strong winds Thursday are causing problems for motorists, trees, electrical crews and even buildings in the Dakotas.
The National Weather Service has posted high wind advisories and warnings for a second day, with gusts of more than 60 and 70 mph in some areas.
North Dakota Transportation officials have issued a travel alert.
There have been reports of an overturned camper and semitrailer in South Dakota.
Scattered power outages also have occurred in the two states as
electrical lines have been blown down.
The Pennington County Courthouse in Rapid City, S.D., shut down Thursday due to a power failure.
On Wednesday, a building under construction in the North Dakota town of New England collapsed. Hess Corp. shut down some oil rig activity in the region.
BUCYRUS, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say a wind-fuelled wildfire has
all but destroyed a tiny southwestern North Dakota town, displacing
all 27 residents.
Adams County States Attorney Aaron Roseland says Bucyrus
(byoo-SY’-ruhs) is “pretty much completely lost” after the fire
gusted through Wednesday. No major injuries have been reported.
Roseland says all Bucyrus’ residents have been evacuated and a
shelter has been established in the nearby town of Hettinger, about
60 miles south of Dickinson.
Scranton fire chief Ryan Schumacher says firefighters had the
blaze under control late Wednesday despite winds gusting more than
60 mph.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze.
Schumacher says “the town is basically gone.”
BUCYRUS, N.D. (AP) – The chairman of the Adams County Commission
says the destruction of one of the county’s communities by a
wildfire is devastating.
Chuck Christman (KRIHST’-muhn) says four of the seven or eight
homes in Bucyrus (byoo-SY’-rus) were destroyed in the Wednesday
fire. He says that’s a lifetime of memories for at least four
families.
Christman says firefighters were able to save a church in the
town, and a privately owned elevator on the outskirts wasn’t
damaged in the town of about 30 residents. The town’s only
business, a picture-framing shop, was destroyed.
Christman says the state fire marshal will be investigating the
cause of the fire that also destroyed an abandoned farmstead and
about 70 electrical power poles and forced the temporary shutdown
of U.S. Highway 12.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A federal agency says TransCanada Corp. has temporarily shut down its existing Keystone pipeline after
tests showed “possible safety issues.”
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration says TransCanada reported shutting down the approximately 2,100-mile pipeline, which can move about 500,000 barrels of crude a day from Alberta, Canada, to facilities in Illinois and Oklahoma.
Jeannie Layson, spokeswoman for PHMSA, says the possible safety
issues were found on part of the pipeline that extends between
Missouri and Illinois.
Layson says in an email that an agency inspector has been sent to review the test results, observe repairs and follow any necessary safety activities.
She says TransCanada hasn’t reported any leaks on the system.
TransCanada spokesman Grady Semmens says the pipeline was shut
down Wednesday and is expected to restart Saturday.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – The east-end floodwater diversion
outlet on Devils Lake has been shut down for repairs.
The problem was first reported by the Devils Lake Journal. State
Water Commission Engineer Bruce Engelhardt tells The Associated
Press that a pipeline leak earlier this month led to some ground
erosion and pipe settling.
He doesn’t have a cost estimate but says most of the repairs are the responsibility of a contractor.
Engelhardt says he hopes the problem will be fixed in a matter
of days.
The lake’s west-end outlet is still pumping excess Devils Lake
water into the Sheyenne River.
But with the east-end outlet shut down, the amount of water being moved off the lake is less than half what it was.
The east-end outlet came online in early summer.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A national peanut butter recall is affecting
some North Dakota charities.

Terry Stanke with the Red River Valley Community Action Agency
in Grand Forks says that agency already has disposed of 740 pounds
of the peanut butter in storage.
The recall is because of the risk of salmonella identified at a
New Mexico manufacturing facility.
Thirty-five illnesses in 19 states have been linked to a Sunland
product. No illnesses have been reported in North Dakota.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Boy Scouts have released nearly 15,000
pages from the organization’s so-called “perversion files” on men
suspected of being pedophiles.
And the documents show that on numerous occasions, local officials helped cover up abuse allegations.
They also show that in many cases, the pedophiles were kept out of Scouting — but other times, they were not.
This is the first time that the earliest of the files — from 1959 to 1971 —
have been made public.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – A Texas judge is ruling in favor of high
