In world and national news…
BEIRUT (AP) – President Barack Obama says the Islamic State is made up of terrorists that “the world rightly associates with inhumanity.” Obama denounced the extremist group following the beheading of Peter Kassig (KAS’-ihg), the former U.S. Army Ranger-turned-aid worker, who was seized while delivering relief supplies in Syria last year. Obama says IS “revels in the slaughter of innocents, including Muslims.”
PARIS (AP) – France says a homegrown terror suspect may have been spotted on the same video that announced the Islamic State group beheading of an American aid worker. France’s interior minister says the video appears to show a Frenchman suspected of joining fighters for the Islamic State group among the killers. French citizens make up the largest contingent of European jihadi fighters who have joined extremists in Syria and Iraq.
BAGHDAD (AP) – There’s no immediate claim of responsibility for deadly attacks in busy commercial areas of Baghdad. Iraqi officials say a pair of car bombs killed at least 14 people and wounded 31. The Iraqi capital is seeing near-daily attacks but nothing compared to the rampage in northern and western Iraq by the Islamic State group.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A comprehensive report says one child in every 30 in the United States is homeless. The National Center on Family Homelessness calculates that nearly 2.5 million American children were homeless at some point in 2013 — an all-time high. The state-by-state report blames the nation’s high poverty rate, the lack of affordable housing and the impacts of pervasive domestic violence.
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama is again facing the rough and tumble world of Washington politics where the possibility of another government shutdown looms over the immigration issue if some congressional Republicans get their way. The Keystone XL oil pipeline project is also a contentious, year-end issue. Obama has just returned from an Asia-Pacific swing.
