 Jamestown  (CSi)  In anticipation of accumulating snow, the Jamestown City Engineer’s Offices announces that, city crews will begin snow removal in the DOWNTOWN area beginning approximately at 11:00 p.m. tonight, (Tuesday – November 25, 2014) and continue during the night.

Downtown merchants and all public/private schools are asked to have their sidewalks shoveled by 9 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, November 25, 2014.

Please push snow directly into the street — DONOT create piles of snow.

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bad weather could snarl Thanksgiving travel plans for residents of the Dakotas.
 
     The National Weather Service says parts of the two states could get up to 4 inches of snow from a clipper system sweeping in from the west.
 
     The agency posted a winter weather advisory for most of North Dakota into Tuesday night, and for northeastern South Dakota into Wednesday morning. Forecasters said travelers should prepare for snow-packed and icy roads.
 
     The good news for travelers is that gasoline is a lot cheaper than it was a year ago at this time.
 
     GasBuddy.com reports the average retail gas price in North Dakota is about $2.95 a gallon, more than 22 cents lower than last year. In South Dakota it’s $2.83 per gallon – more than 31 cents lower.

 

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation CEO Connie Ova has received an average rating of between satisfactory and above average at the JSDC Executive Committee meeting.

JSDC President Gary Riffe said he compiled employee evaluation forms returned by 12 members of the JSDC Board of Directors.

Riffe listed comments on the evaluation made by the board members without their names. Those comments ranged from positive to negative.

The Executive Committee recommended a 4 percent pay raise on a 3-1 vote with Jamestown Mayor Katie Andersen opposed. The JSDC Board of Directors will act on the recommendation at its December, 8^th meeting.

Ms. Ova is currently paid $87,210 per year. The increase would boost her wages to $90,698 per year.

The board has reduced the clawback period built into a real estate sales agreement between the JSDC and Tim Nill, owner of Nill Construction, which is purchasing a lot in the I-94 Business Park in south Jamestown.

It passed on a 4-1 vote with Katie Andersen opposed.

 

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund said Monday he received a “great reaction” from community members about having Jamestown Tourism pursue the idea of a community calendar. The concept was discussed Monday evening with about 40 community members on hand.

He says the calendar would a “source,” of all community events.

Items at the meeting included access to posting events, along with usage, and the ability for groups to plan ahead for events.

Under the concept Jamestown Tourism would fund the project with volunteers for a committee that would determine all the functions and features of the community calendar.

Marketing firms, KKBOLD, of Bismarck, and Redplum Media, of Jamestown, were asked by Swedlund to come up with conceptual designs for a community calendar.

A representative from CSi Cable which has its own community calendar, “The Big Calendar,” and Tanae Clocksene, a Jamestown Tourism Board member and general manager of Ingstad Family Media, said their companies would not be getting rid of their own community calendars, but welcomed the idea of Jamestown Tourism having a bigger community calendar that all people could access.

Audience members who coordinate publicity for different community groups or events said they weren’t sure if having another community calendar to send information to would be a good thing.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The community is invited to attend the 24th Annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner at Concordia Lutheran Church, at 502 1st Avenue North in Jamestown.

Dinner is served from 11-a.m., to 1-p.m., in the church basement, which is handicapped accessible.

Drivers will be available to deliver meals, or give a ride to the church for services and the meal. Call 252-2819 for delivered meals or rides.

The meal is free, and those invited include single people, parents, families, people working that day, college students, and those who don’t want to cook, and those traveling through the area.

The menu includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, corn and dessert.

　

Valley City (CSi) A public input meeting is set for  this evening (Tuesday November 25, 2014) to discuss proposed West Main Street Shared-Use Path and 5th Street Southwest Bike Lane.

The meeting will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, November 25 inside City Hall in Valley City.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the proposed paved, 10-foot wide, shared-use path along West Main Street from 24th Ave SW to 5th St SW and a proposed bike lane along 5th Street SW. The meeting will provide opportunity for public input.

Representatives from the City of Valley City and KLJ Engineering will be on hand to answer questions and discuss your concerns.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Fargo man was arrested after police say he entered a south side business and threatened a woman with a gun.
 
  The incident happened about 12:45 p.m. Monday. Police say they eventually located the suspect at a home in north Fargo, where he surrendered without incident.
 
     No injuries were reported.
 
     The suspect was arrested for terrorizing and violation of a protection order. He is being held in the Cass County Jail.
    

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – One of two brothers accused of scamming the government out of $2 million in crop insurance payments says a previous conviction should not be allowed as evidence in trial.
 
     Fifty-year-old Aaron Johnson and 47-year-old Derek Johnson, who grew potatoes in the Carrington area, are charged in federal court with conspiring to receive illegal payments by intentionally damaging the spuds. They have pleaded not guilty.
 
     Aaron Johnson’s lawyers say his 1995 conviction in a farm-related case should be excluded because it would likely lead the jury to believe he was guilty on the current charges. The government says it can be used in an effort to show motive or intent.
 
     A hearing to discuss Johnson’s prior conviction and other proposed evidence in the case is scheduled Tuesday in Fargo.

 

HILLSBORO, N.D. (AP) – A man wanted in Indiana for stealing money meant for a family in need is jailed in North Dakota.
 
29-year-old Eric Baldwin was originally arrested for breaking into a warming house at an outdoor ice rink in Hillsboro, in eastern North Dakota. He later was arrested for escape when he ran from deputies after a court hearing.
 
     Baldwin is accused of stealing a donation jar from the counter of a convenience store in Jasper, Indiana.
 
     North Dakota authorities say they don’t know why Baldwin is in Hillsboro.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have charged a Bismarck man who they say threatened another man with a butcher knife.
 
   Thai Nguyen was charged Monday with felony terrorizing in South Central District Court. Bismarck Police Sgt. Mark Buschena says he threatened a 53-year-old man’s life on Saturday.
 
     Buschena says the man locked himself in the bathroom after the threat.
 
     Police arrested Nguyen and took him to Burleigh County Detention Center. They seized the knife as evidence.
 
     Nguyen is being held on $2,500 cash bond. Online jail records didn’t indicate an attorney.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Police in Fargo say one individual was hospitalized over the weekend after being stabbed on a party bus.
 
     Lt. Joel Vettel says two men were arrested following the incident. He says the men were strangers who got on the bus as it left a bar in downtown Fargo.
 
     Vettel says that an argument ensued after they got on the bus and the victim was then stabbed. He adds that the victim suffered a small stab wound to the abdomen and was taken to a local hospital.
 
     Vettel says 33-year-old Ayub Abukar is facing an aggravated assault charge. Twenty-four-year-old Bower Ali, who reportedly has no permanent address, has been charged with resisting a police officer.
 
     Court records don’t list an attorney for Abukar. It’s unclear whether Ali has legal representation.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A West Fargo woman has pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in the death of her 4-day-old son.
 
     Reanne Pederson entered the plea Monday. The baby died when the 32-year-old woman fell asleep breastfeeding him in June.
 
     Pederson tells police she had snorted the prescription painkiller hydrocodone and may have suffocated the baby. He became unresponsive and died at the hospital the following day.
 
     She also admitted to smoking methamphetamine days before giving birth.
 
     She is scheduled to be sentenced in January.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – BNSF is doing more safety testing and maintenance on tracks near Casselton where five trains have been in accidents in the last decade. The most recent derailment was less than two weeks ago when 12 cars of a train carrying empty oil tankers left the tracks. Officials are blaming that on a broken rail.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The corn and sunflower harvests are nearing completion in North Dakota.

The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that the sunflower harvest is 86 percent done, slightly behind the average pace. The corn harvest is 92 percent complete, ahead of the average.

Pasture and range conditions in the state are rated 65 percent good to excellent. Stock water supplies are rated 93 percent adequate to surplus.

About two-thirds of the winter wheat crop in North Dakota is rated in good to excellent condition.

 

  BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Gerald W. VandeWalle has been unanimously re-elected as chief justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court. VandeWalle has been the chief justice since 1993. He was appointed to the state’s Supreme Court in 1978 by Governor Arthur Link.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A group of preschoolers in south Fargo is reaching out to homeless children their age just in time for the holidays.
 
     With the help of parents and volunteers, the children at St. John Lutheran Preschool sewed mittens and hats for kids who are staying at the Churches United Shelter in Moorhead. The preschoolers also created notes and drawings to go along with their Christmas presents.
 
  The  effort is meant to demonstrate giving, service and community to the young children. Jana Bruhschwein of St. John Lutheran Preschool says introducing service projects between the ages of 3 and 5 teaches kids that they can do something to help others even though they’re young.
 
     The mittens and hats will be delivered to the shelter at the beginning of December.

Jamestown (CSi) A road win last evening for the UJ Jimmies mens basketball team, defeating number 4 ranked, Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Brequan Tuckerhit a 3-pointer in the final second of the game to lift the University of Jamestown to a 80-79 win.

It was the first loss of the season for the Cougars (7-1), who have not had fewer than 23 wins in each of the last seven seasons.

 The Jimmies play Kuyper College tonight in Grand Rapids.

 NEW ORLEANS (AP) – The Baltimore Ravens are 7-4 after Justin Forsett rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-27 triumph over the Saints in New Orleans last night. Will Hill brought back an interception 44 yards for a third-quarter touchdown that put the Baltimore Ravens ahead to stay. Drew Brees (breez) threw for 420 yards and three touchdowns for the 4-7 Saints.
 
     DETROIT (AP) – The Buffalo Bills crushed the New York Jets 38-3 in a game that was moved to Detroit due to last week’s snowstorms in Western New York. Bills receiver Scott Chandler acknowledged Buffalo fans by catching a 19-yard scoring pass before mimicking a shoveling motion in the end zone. Kyle Orton was 24 of 32 for 230 yards and two touchdowns for the 6-5 Bills.

 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Minnesota senior forward Shae Kelley has won Big Ten Player of the Week honors for her performance in wins over Cleveland State and Memphis. Kelley averaged a double-double with 20.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game last week. It’s the first player of the week honor for Kelley as a Gopher and the first for the team this season.

 UNDATED (AP) – Josh Willingham is retiring after 11 major league seasons. The outfielder hit .215 with 14 homers and 40 RBIs in 364 plate appearances this year with Minnesota and Kansas City. Willingham had 35 homers and 110 RBIs with the Twins two years ago.

 BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Red Sox have used the free agent market to acquire infielders Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez. The moves give the Red Sox a potent batting order that includes two of the last three World Series MVPs, Sandoval and David Ortiz. Boston already seems set at shortstop with 22-year-old Xander Bogaerts (ZAN’-dur BOH’-gahrts), and with Sandoval at third they are expected to move Ramirez to left field.
 
     SEATTLE (AP) – A person with knowledge of the deal had told The Associated Press that Kyle Seager has agreed to a $100 million, seven-year contract with Seattle. Seager is coming off his first All-Star game selection and his first Gold Glove. The 27-year-old hit .268 with a career-high 25 homers and 96 RBIs.

Pitchers Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz are among 17 newcomers on baseball’s 2015 Hall of Fame ballot. Craig Biggio tops 17 holdovers on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot announced Monday. That group includes Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Mike Piazza, Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines.
 

Former left-handed pitcher Ray Sadecki (sah-DEK’-ee) has died from complications of blood cancer at age 73.  Sadecki was a 20-game winner in helping the Cardinals capture the 1964 World Series. He also went to the World Series with the 1973 New York Mets and compiled a 135-131 career record with a 3.78 ERA.

     UNDATED (AP) – Kentucky has strengthened its hold on the top spot in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll this week.  The 5-0 Wildcats got 62 of the 65 first-place votes after three wins, including a rout of then No. 5 Kansas.
 
     The other three first-place votes went to Wisconsin, which checks in at No. 2 this week.  Arizona, Duke and North Carolina round out the top five. Louisville, Texas, Virginia, Wichita State and Gonzaga are the rest of the top 10.

 

Quinn Obit…

 VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Former NHL player, coach and executive Pat Quinn has died at age 71, after a long illness.
 
     Quinn played parts of nine seasons in the NHL and went on to enjoy a long coaching career. He coached Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Toronto, leading the Flyers and Canucks to the Stanley Cup finals.
 
     Quinn also guided Canada to the gold medal at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.

 

In world and national news…

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) – There’s an uneasy calm this morning after deep racial tension in Ferguson, Missouri erupted after a grand jury decided not to indict a white police officer who shot an unarmed black 18-year-old in August. The chaos last night included more than a dozen buildings damaged or destroyed by fire as gunshots kept firefighters temporarily at bay. Police lobbed tear gas from armored vehicles.
 
     BAUCHI, Nigeria (AP) – Witnesses and a security official say the suicide bombers who killed at least 30 people in a northeastern Nigerian city were teenage girls. The bombers, dressed in full hijab, entered a busy market in Maiduguri and detonated their explosives. The second bomber detonated her explosives after a crowd had gathered following the first blast.
 
     PARIS (AP) – Russia won’t be getting a French-built warship any time soon.  France today suspended the planned delivery after months of growing speculation about what would be the biggest arms sale ever by a NATO country to the Kremlin. Under growing pressure from allies over the Ukraine crisis, the French president’s office announced the suspension “until further notice.”
 
     STRASBOURG, France (AP) – Pope Francis is telling European lawmakers that there’s no room when it comes to refugees for self-interested policies that risk lives and fuel social conflict. In a speech today to the European Parliament, Francis demanded that Europe craft a unified and fair immigration policy, saying the thousands of refugees coming ashore need acceptance and assistance.
 
     VENICE, Fla. (AP) – Authorities in Florida say they’ve broken up a high school prostitution ring organized by a 17-year-old Sarasota High School student. The teen faces felony charges of human trafficking of a person under 18. Venice police say a 21-year-old man is accused of paying $40 and a bottle of liquor to have sex with a 15-year-old girl. Officials say the ring was uncovered when four students confided to administrators.
