Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 23, 2012) — The North Dakota State Hospital in Jamestown plans to close the Adolescent Care Facility in three to six months.
Superintendent Alex Schweitzer says adolescents with
psychological problems or addiction issues now will be treated at
private facilities around the state. Teens with disabilities will
be placed at the state Developmental Center in Grafton.
Schweitzer says when he came to the State Hospital it 1995 it had 35 beds for teens. He says the facility now sees only about a dozen referrals a year because of a trend toward more community-based care.
The State Hospital will continue to treat adults with
psychological or addiction issues, and also house committed sex offenders.
Valley City, N.D., (KCSi-T.V. News Oct 22, 2012) — The Thundering Saints have donated $8,000 to Hospice of the Red River Valley, generated from proceeds of the fourth annual Debbie Gabel Memorial Ride held in Valley City on July 28, 2012.
The donation will be used to provide compassionate end-of-life care to those in Valley City and surrounding communities.
This year’s ride attracted approximately 200 motorcycle riders from the surrounding states.
The event also included an appearance from the Vikings cheerleaders, a breakfast served by Relay for Life, a raffle, a silent auction and supper at the VFW, and street dance.
The raffle’s grand prize, a 2012 Harley Davidson Heritage Classic, was won by a woman who has a son with cancer.
Event founder, Rocky Gabel says, “We had another successful year. The proceeds of the event stay local, and the community has really rallied to make it a success.”
Next year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, 2013.
DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s state engineer says
repairs have been completed at the east-end floodwater diversion
outlet on Devils Lake.
Todd Sando says officials on Monday were getting outlet operations restarted.
He says officials are confident they can ramp up to the outlet’s maximum flow.
The east-end outlet came online earlier this summer, to complement a west-end outlet.
A pipeline leak earlier this month led to ground erosion and pipe settling at the east-end structure.
Sando says the repairs were covered under warranty.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – About 30 North Dakota Army National Guard

the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay. Their mission at the
high-security prison will begin after they finish final training at
Fort Bliss in Texas.
A send-off ceremony is scheduled Saturday at the Armed Forces
Reserve Center in Fargo.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Workers have started removing Fighting
Sioux imagery outside the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks.
The removal of the sign reading “Home of the Fighting Sioux”
was required under a 2007 agreement to settle a lawsuit between
North Dakota and the NCAA.
Arena spokesman Chris Semrausays removing the sign will take most of
the week. It will be replaced with a sign reading “Home of North
Dakota Hockey” in November.
The sign is one of six “Home of the Fighting Sioux” signs that
must be removed. An agreement between the state and the NCAA
released the arena from having to remove most of the other Fighting
Sioux logos and imagery.

of the poll.
The University of Sioux Falls has moved up two spots to No. 21

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State has moved up a spot to No.

Southern.
South Dakota State got votes in both polls but did not crack the

CHICAGO (AP) – Jay Cutler shook off an apparent rib injury to
lead the Chicago Bears to a 13-7 victory over the Detroit Lions
last night.
Cutler was sacked by Ndamukong Suh and ultimately went
to the locker room before halftime to have his ribs examined. Lions
quarterback Matthew Stafford threw a touchdown pass late in the
fourth quarter to Ryan Broyles.
Green Bay Packers safety Charles Woodson has a broken
collarbone and will be out approximately six weeks.
Coach Mike McCarthy confirmed the severity of the injury, a day after the
team’s 30-20 win at St. Louis.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Twins have made some changes to
their coaching staff.
The Twins have hired Tom Brunansky as their hitting coach, Bobby Cellular to be the bullpen coach and Terry Steinbach as a bench coach.
All three have previously worked in the Twins organization.
NEW YORK (AP) – Kansas State has moved ahead of Oregon for No. 3
in the new BCS standings, behind SEC rivals Alabama and Florida.
The Wildcats’ big victory Saturday at West Virginia was enough
to nudge them past the Ducks, who are No. 2 in both polls but are
getting held back by computer ratings that lag behind the other
highly ranked teams.
The Crimson Tide is still solidly in first, and Florida grabbed
a firmer grip on second with a 44-11 victory over South Carolina on
Saturday.
The Gators are tops in the computer ratings and Kansas State is
second. The Wildcats beat West Virginia 55-14 for their third Big
12 road victory.
Fourth-place Oregon is coming off a 43-21 win at Arizona State
and sits sixth in the computer ratings.

GENEVA (AP) – The list of Tour de France champions from
1999-2005 will be left vacant after the International Cycling Union
announced yesterday that it has formally stripped Lance Armstrong
of those seven titles and given him a lifetime ban for doping.
Tour director Christian Prudhomme said there will be no winner listed
for that period, and he also wants Armstrong to pay back prize
money from those victories.

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) – The debates are over, and the
presidential and vice presidential candidates now face two weeks of
relentless campaigning in states where electoral votes are still
being fought over.
President Barack Obama told Americans last night
that there’s a choice between what he called his record of “real
progress” and, in his words, the “wrong and reckless” ideas of
Mitt Romney.
His Republican rival countered by saying the
candidates offer “two different paths” — one of decline under
Obama, and one of brighter promise from himself.
WASHINGTON (AP) – Vice President Joe Biden says Mitt Romney and
his running mate seem to have transformed from hawks into doves. He
tells CBS that Romney’s positions at last night’s foreign policy
debate leave him wondering “what they stand for.”
Romney said last night that war should be the last option to keep Iran from
developing a nuclear weapon.
Romney’s running mate, meanwhile, is finding fault with President Barack Obama’s debate comments on the size of the military. Paul Ryan says you can’t compare battleships and bayonets.
JERUSALEM (AP) – The Palestinians are giving a cool reception to
both U.S. presidential candidates after their foreign policy
debate.
Neither President Barack Obama nor Mitt Romney spoke much
about the Israel-Palestinian conflict during last night’s debate.
Both men, however, took great efforts to voice support for Israel’s
security.
HOUSTON (AP) – Jury selection begins in Houston today in the
trial of a woman accused of leaving children alone at a home day
care center while she went to a nearby store.
Oil that was left on a stove top burner ignited, causing a fire that killed four
children and injuring three others.
Jessica Tata is going on trial for felony murder in the death of one of the children.
BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan (AP) – A Russian spacecraft has lifted off
today from Kazakhstan, carrying one American and two Russians to
the international space station.
They’ll join the three astronauts already there — one from the U.S., one from Russia and one from Japan.
