BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A judge has issued an order prohibiting two brothers convicted in a federal crop insurance case from contacting witnesses called by the government.

A jury last week found Aaron and Derek Johnson guilty of conspiring to receive illegal payments and giving false statements. Authorities say the Cooperstown-area farmers illegally collected about $2 million after intentionally destroying potatoes and claiming the damage occurred naturally.

U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson says the brothers cannot contact government witnesses unless lawyers from both sides are present.

The jury deliberated for about five hours before returning their verdict early Friday evening. A sentencing date has not been set.

The nonprofit organization aims to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony that began at Arlington National Cemetery in 1992. Thousands of locations across the country are involved in the effort to recognize military veterans with a wreath.

Coordinator Richard Reuer says the Rosehill Memorial Cemetery is a symbol of honor and thankfulness. The wreaths will stay on display through Jan 2.  ALEXANDER, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Transportation Department is assessing safety at a highway intersection following a string of accidents near Alexander.

McKenzie County emergency manager Karolin Rockvoy requested the review after a fatal crash on U.S. Highway 85 on Tuesday. It was the 20th highway death in the county this year and followed a nearby crash Monday and a fatal accident on Dec. 6. At least two of the three crashes were caused by a failure to yield.

DOT deputy director Mark Nelson says inspectors will determine whether there are visual traps or obstructions near the intersection of highways 85 and 68. He says the review will likely take two months.

Alexander’s fire chief says he thinks there are at least 10 locations on the four-lane highway that need lighting.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Officials are investigating the source of a carbon monoxide leak that sickened youth hockey players in Fargo.

It wasn’t immediately known how many players became ill at the Teamsters Arena on Sunday, but some of them were treated for headaches and nausea at a local hospital.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Dane Carley says firefighters measured carbon monoxide levels in the arena up to 110 parts per million, and levels at 9 parts per million are considered dangerous.

Arena Manager Jeff Lockhart says the carbon monoxide might have come from a faulty heating system or a malfunctioning Zamboni ice machine.

Officials with Xcel Energy checked the arena on Monday and found no trace of gas.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – State wildlife officials are reminding winter anglers in North Dakota that any fish house left unoccupied on state waters must be made out of materials that will allow it to float.

The Game and Fish Department says a lot of anglers ask whether campers qualify as legal fish houses. Officials say the must-be-able-to-float rule still applies.

Any structure that doesn’t float must be removed when the angler leaves the ice. Unoccupied fish houses left on the ice must have the owner’s name and either address or telephone number displayed on the outside in characters at least 3 inches high.

Other fish house regulations can be found at WWW DOT GF DOT ND DOT gov.

UNDATED (AP) – The Denver Broncos, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts are the first three NFL teams to wrap up division titles. The Broncos are AFC West champs after beating San Diego 22-10 behind Connor Barth’s five field goals, and Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes in a 41-13 pounding of Miami that gave the Patriots the AFC East crown. Andrew Luck tossed a pair of second-quarter TD passes as the Colts beat Houston 17-10 to win the AFC South.

NFL…

UNDATED (AP) – Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson told a top NFL executive last month that he wanted Commissioner Roger Goodell to consider before suspending him that he’d already lost $4 million in endorsements and missed more than half the season. The transcripts were used as Peterson unsuccessfully tried to appeal his suspension. Peterson called Troy Vincent to try to get a firm idea of how many games he would be suspended.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – A big part of the Green Bay Packers’ great teams in the 60’s has passed away. The team has confirmed that Fuzzy Thurston has died at the age of 80. He played on five Green Bay teams that won the NFL championship in the 60’s and was best known for his blocking on the Packers’ famed power sweep. He was also on the 1958 Baltimore Colts’ squad that beat the Giants in the NFL title game.

NBA…

UNDATED (AP) – The Sacramento Kings have fired coach Michael Malone just 24 games into his second season with the team.

A person with knowledge of the move confirmed the firing Sunday night on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced it yet.

In world and national news…

SYDNEY (AP) – One news reporter in Sydney says that a gunman holding people hostage in a downtown cafe appeared to become very agitated when five of the hostages escaped. Authorities aren’t saying how many people are still being held in the Lindt Chocolat Cafe or what the hostages who escaped have told them. But some of the hostages are being forced to hold up a black flag in the cafe window with the Islamic declaration of faith written on it.

GENEVA (AP) – The U.N. human rights office says more than 4,700 people have been killed and more than 10,300 wounded in the conflict-affected areas of eastern Ukraine. It says more than 5 million people are living in those areas where they face rising hardships and some struggle to stay alive. The latest findings from the Geneva office are based on reports from a 34-member U.N. monitoring mission through Dec. 12.

BERLIN (AP) – The German government says it wants a debate about immigration but adds there’s no place in the country for those who incite hatred against religious or ethnic minorities. Anti-Islam rallies in German cities have been growing in recent weeks, and more than 10,000 people are expected to attend such a protest today in Dresden. A government spokesman says in light of a sharp increase in asylum requests this year, especially by Syrian refugees, the issue of immigration “is so important that there needs to be a serious and open and also very nuanced debate.”

WASHINGTON (AP) – A new study says the hotter it is the less productive Americans are on the job. The study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that days that averaged about 77 degrees ended up reducing a person’s income by about $5 a day when compared with days that were about 20 degrees cooler. And a county’s average economic productivity decreased by nearly 1 percent for every degree that the average daily temperature was above 59.

NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine (AP) – The owner of a Christmas tree farm in Maine says customers are taking advantage of his business’ honor system by stealing trees and wreaths. Todd Murphy, of Trees to Please in Norridgewock, says about $2,000 worth of merchandise has been stolen this season, including about a dozen trees. Murphy says he stocked the cut trees at about 5 p.m. Saturday, and when he got in on Sunday morning, they were gone. He tells the Kennebec Journal that hundreds of people visit the farm each weekend around the holidays.
