Valley City (CSi) A Pledge-a-thon to support the Wellness, Health and Physical Education Center, in Valley City, is set for Tuesday December 16, from 2-7-p.m., at the Rec Center gymnasium

The Pledge-a-thon provides an opportunity for the public to contribute to the Wellness Center and create excitement for the project.

On that day individuals can call in or stop by to make a pledge to the Wellness Center.

In addition to testimonials from those who have made a contribution, and the Wellness Center’s importance to the community, on hand will be members of the Park Districts, Parks and Rec director, VCSU, Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation, the steering committee, and others.

Volunteers will be taking pledges, and there will be snacks and refreshments, bouncy house and prizes for the kids, drawings each hour for those who have pledged, and possibly Santa for a few hours.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The United Way is hosting a Masquerade Ball on New Year’s Eve December 31 at the Shady’s Ballroom at the Gladstone Inn with social hour starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased from any United Way board member and at Coborn’s/Cashwise.

Tickets are available in advance only.

On Monday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, United Way Secretary/Publicity Chair, Dana Wallace said dinner will begin at 7:30 with guests choosing between Chicken Marsala and Fettuccine Alfredo when they purchase their tickets.

There will be a short presentation highlighting the agencies served at 8:30pm.

At 9:00pm the dancing will begin. Music will be provided by School of Rock and get ready to dance until the New Year!

There will also be a photo booth courtesy of Photos by Joy (Joy Powers). For three hours you will be able to create your own keepsake of the evening.

All proceeds will support the Jamestown United Way.

The 2014-2015 campaign goal is $210,000.

Dana said the Jamestown United Way was able to achieve their ambitious goal last year and the Jamestown community adding that the Jamestown community has been incredible over the last few years, and believes that support will continue. The Jamestown community has a greater need for services, which is the reason that the campaign goal was raised to help meet the needs for the services in Jamestown.

She said Jamestown United Way has moved toward the Community Impact model. This model will allow the United Way to show the community—through agency collaboration—how it impacts the community.

United Way’s work is focused on the building blocks for a good life:

– Helping Children and Youth Achieve Their Potential

Income

– Promoting Financial Stability and Independence

Health

– Improving People’s Health

The United Way currently helps to fund 19 agencies some of which include: Buffalo Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, Boy & Girl Scouts, Camp Rokiwan, Safe Shelter, RSVP, James River Family YMCA, Arts After School which is a program for children within the Jamestown Fine Arts Association, and Consumer Credit Counseling.

99% of the money donated to the United Way stays in Jamestown and Stutsman County.

The Jamestown United Way Board consists of an 18 member Board of Directors. This year the President is Megan Aldinger, 1^st Vice President Carla Edinger, 2^nd Vice President Jessica Haak, Treasurer, Rebecca Kercher, and Secretary/Publicity, Dana Wallace. Board members can serve two consecutive three year terms and then are required to sit out, so thet are always looking for new board members who bring new ideas and energy to the board.

The United Way theme this year is “United We Can.”

Previously fundraisers this yeat have included, an Outdoor Movie Event at McElroy Park, and a Bake Sale at the Buffalo Mall, with events show community support.

Dana added that the past two campaigns have greatly exceeded expectations and the citizens of Jamestown and Stutsman County have been so supportive. The goal has gotten larger this year, but they hope to not only meet it, but exceed it.

Upcoming events or fundraisers taking place in the coming months, includes, a pending spring event.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have suspended the water search for a snowmobiler who is believed to have gone through the ice on the Sheyenne River at West Fargo.

Thirty-four-year-old Cole Schwindt, of Moorhead, Minnesota, has been missing since Dec. 2. Divers later found his snowmobile submerged in the river, and police say he is believed drowned.

Searches have been conducted using boats, dogs, divers and electronic equipment.
Foot searches will continue in the area, but police say water searches won’t resume until spring

Jamestown City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says, the local water rescue team assisted at the scene six times during the search.

He says the Jamestown Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) that assisted in the search was damaged, likely a circuit board, and that officials are getting an estimate on the repair costs which will be submitted to insurance.

He stresses that Jamestown has a “loaner” ROV and is ready for use, if called upon.

He pointed out that the ROV manufacturer, Video Ray, located in Pennsylvania over-nighted a new ROV at no chargeon Friday and the North Dakota Highway Patrol in Jamestown brought the ROV to the scene of the river search so the operation could continue.

 

 Valley City (CSi)  North Dakota Congressman, Kevin Cramer will visit Valley City on Thursday December 18th, at 11:23 a.m. at Valley City High School.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are looking for a shoplifter who pulled a gun on a store employee.
 
     Authorities say a man allegedly took a phone from the Wal-Mart store, and pulled the gun when a worker confronted him outside the store. The worker backed off, and the suspect ran to a car and fled.
 
     No one was hurt in the incident about 1 a.m. Monday. Police are studying surveillance video to try to identify the suspect.

 

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Officials are investigating the source of a carbon monoxide leak that sickened youth hockey players in Fargo.
 
     It wasn’t immediately known how many players became ill at the Teamsters Arena on Sunday, but some of them were treated for headaches and nausea at a local hospital.
 
     Fire Department Battalion Chief Dane Carley says firefighters measured carbon monoxide levels in the arena up to 110 parts per million, and levels at 9 parts per million are considered dangerous.
 
     Arena Manager Jeff Lockhart says the carbon monoxide might have come from a faulty heating system or a malfunctioning Zamboni ice machine.
 
     Officials with Xcel Energy checked the arena on Monday and found no trace of gas.

 

 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck man accused of attempting to stab and strangle his wife in an argument over a vehicle title has pleaded not guilty.
 
     Fifty-four-year-old Terry Link appeared in South Central District Court Monday on charges of attempted murder, interfering with an emergency call and preventing arrest.
 
     Authorities say Link held his wife down and attempted to strangle her until she agreed to give him the title, and later threatened her with a kitchen knife. A police officer punched Link in the face when he wouldn’t let go of the victim.
 
     The attempted murder charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
 
     Link is being held in a Bismarck jail on $250,000 cash bond.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man is charged in South Central District Court with human trafficking.
 
     Thirty-two-year-old Steven Ezeofor, of Wahpeton, was arrested last week at a Bismarck motel where he and a woman were staying. The woman told police she was a prostitute.
 
     Authorities say Ezeofor had more than $13,000 in his possession and the woman had $3.
 
     The operation was uncovered by Bismarck police who found an advertisement on an online classifieds website frequented by human traffickers and prostitutes.
 
     Court documents do not list a lawyer for Ezeofor, who is charged with a Class A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. A preliminary hearing has not been scheduled.

 

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – A Colorado man faces sentencing Monday in the killing of a Montana math teacher in the Northern Plains’ oil patch.
 
     Lester Van Waters Jr. of Parachute, Colorado pleaded guilty last year to a count of deliberate homicide by accountability. The case is before Montana District Judge Richard Simonton in Sidney.
 
     Prosecutors say Waters and accomplice Michael Spell killed 43-year-old Sidney High School teacher Sherry Arnold during an abduction attempt in 2012. Her body was found more than two months later buried in a rural area of North Dakota.
 
     In exchange for Waters’ guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop an attempted kidnapping charge and recommend Waters receive 100 years in prison with 20 years suspended.
 
     Spell pleaded guilty last month to deliberate homicide. His sentencing has not been scheduled.

 

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court is refusing to allow Arizona to enforce stringent restrictions on medical abortions while a challenge to them plays out in lower courts.
 
     The justices on Monday left in place a lower court ruling that blocked rules that regulate where and how women can take drugs that induce abortion. The rules also would regulate the use of the abortion medications after the seventh week of pregnancy instead of the ninth.
 
     Planned Parenthood was among abortion providers that challenged the rules in federal court. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals prevented the state from putting them in place during the legal challenge. Similar laws are in effect in North Dakota, Ohio and Texas. The Oklahoma Supreme Court struck down the restrictions in that state.

 

 MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Wild Card 2 ticket sold in North Dakota has won a jackpot worth nearly $328,000.
 
     North Dakota lottery officials say the ticket sold in Minot matched all five white balls and the Wild Card in Saturday’s drawing. The winning numbers were 9, 11, 12, 24 and 26, and the Wild Card was the ace of diamonds.
 
     The odds of winning the Wild Card 2 jackpot are 1 in about 1.9 million. The winner has about six months to claim the prize.
 
     Wild Card 2 is played in the Dakotas, Montana and Idaho. The jackpot starts over at $200,000 for the next drawing, on Wednesday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Attendance at the four Pride of Dakota Holiday Showcases across North Dakota this year set a record, at about 36,000.
 
     The previous record was in 2012, when about 34,000 people attended the showcases in the state’s four largest cities: Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks and Minot.
 
     Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says attendance in Fargo and Grand Forks set records this year. The Bismarck showcase once again was the biggest, drawing nearly 12,000 shoppers.
 
     More than 500 companies are members of the Agriculture Department’s Pride of Dakota branding program. During the special showcases, companies set up booths in one location to display and sell their wares.

 

In sports…

 FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State University defensive end Kyle Emanuel has been named the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.
 
     The All-American senior on Monday was named winner of the 2014 Buck Buchanan Award.
 
     Emanuel leads the FCS in tackles for loss (28.5) and is second in sacks (17).  In eight games against Top 25 opponents, he has 47 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and nine quarterback hurries. Emanuel ranks ninth in FCS history with 33 career sacks, and is three sacks from tying the NDSU career record.
 
     The three-time defending FCS champion Bison host Sam Houston State on Friday in this year’s semifinals.
 
     Emanuel’s teammate, All-America strong safety Colten Heagle, was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award.

 

In world and national news…

 SYDNEY (AP) – Police are offering more details about the deadly end to a hostage siege at a cafe in Sydney, Australia. It ended early Tuesday — local time — after more than 16 hours. Police say they raided the cafe after they heard a number of gunshots from inside. When it was over, the gunman and two of the hostages were dead, and four others were wounded. A state police commissioner says police believed that if they didn’t raid the cafe when they did, “there would have been many more lives lost.” Police aren’t saying whether the hostages who died were caught in the crossfire or shot by the gunman — identified as an Iranian-born man who’d already faced other charges.
 
     BERLIN (AP) – As more and more Germans flock to anti-Islam demonstrations around the country, Germany’s chancellor is warning people not to be duped by rhetoric from the far right. One group has staged weekly rallies in the eastern city of Dresden that have attracted thousands. That group insists that it’s protesting only against extremism, and not against immigrants or Islam itself. But the protests have received open support from neo-Nazi groups.
 
     SOUDERTON, Pa. (AP) – Authorities outside Philadelphia say six people are dead and one is wounded, and the suspect remains on the loose. A prosecutor identifies the suspect as Bradley Stone. She says all of the victims are related to him. They were found in multiple homes. Police officers have converged on a home in Pennsburg, about 30 miles northwest of Philadelphia. They are using a megaphone to try to bring an end to their daylong pursuit of Stone.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) -Authorities are blaming a blown transformer and a construction mishap for turning the lights out at several government buildings in Washington Monday. The State Department says a power line serving its headquarters was severed in a construction accident. Emergency generators allowed some staff to keep working, but others were sent to work from different offices or home. It also caused lights to flicker at the White House. Meanwhile, police say a transformer explosion at the Office of Personnel Management caused outages there and at several government buildings.
 
     WASHINGTON (AP) – Police can use evidence that was seized during a traffic stop — even if it turns out that officers initially pulled over a car based on a misunderstanding of the law. That ruling comes Monday from the Supreme Court, which says it doesn’t violate the Constitution’s protection against unreasonable searches.
