Valley City (CSi) A Pledge-a-thon to support the Wellness, Health and Physical Education Center, in Valley City, is set for today Tuesday December 16, from 2-7-p.m., at the Rec Center gymnasium.
The Pledge-a-thon provides an opportunity for the public to contribute to the Wellness Center and create excitement for the project.
On that day individuals can call in or stop by to make a pledge to the Wellness Center.
In addition to testimonials from those who have made a contribution, and the Wellness Center’s importance to the community, on hand will be members of the Park Districts, Parks and Rec director, VCSU, Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation, the steering committee, and others.
Volunteers will be taking pledges, and there will be snacks and refreshments, bouncy house and prizes for the kids, drawings each hour for those who have pledged, and possibly Santa for a few hours.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Public School Board has agreed to changes with graduation requirements.
Also approved was modifications to course offerings.
Three recommendations wer approved from Jamestown High School Principal Bill Nold.
Those include replacing the “Word processing” course with a “computer applications” course as the required computer-technology course for graduation.
Another approved recommendation was the addition of an 18-week multimedia elective course in the business-technology department that would use Adobe Creative Cloud, which would give students experience in graphic design, audio and video editing, digital animation and basic multimedia applications.
The third recommendation was to make the yearbook class a year-long elective that would take place during the school day rather than after school as it does now.
Jamestown High School Assistant Principal, John Conway reported on the drug court program a partnership between Stutsman and Barnes counties.
Conway said there are currently five students in the program, down from 10 when it first began.
Teenagers in the program must be between the ages of 14 and 17 and 3 months, have at least two prior run-ins with the law and must be using or at risk of using drugs or alcohol.
Teens who complete the program can have their criminal records expunged.
Jamestown (CSi) The United Way is hosting a Masquerade Ball on New Year’s Eve December 31 at the Shady’s Ballroom at the Gladstone Inn with social hour starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased from any United Way board member and at Coborn’s/Cashwise.
Tickets are available in advance only.

On Monday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, United Way Secretary/Publicity Chair, Dana Wallace said dinner will begin at 7:30 with guests choosing between Chicken Marsala and Fettuccine Alfredo when they purchase their tickets.
There will be a short presentation highlighting the agencies served at 8:30pm.
At 9:00pm the dancing will begin. Music will be provided by School of Rock and get ready to dance until the New Year!
There will also be a photo booth courtesy of Photos by Joy (Joy Powers). For three hours you will be able to create your own keepsake of the evening.
All proceeds will support the Jamestown United Way.
The 2014-2015 campaign goal is $210,000.
Dana said the Jamestown United Way was able to achieve their ambitious goal last year and the Jamestown community adding that the Jamestown community has been incredible over the last few years, and believes that support will continue. The Jamestown community has a greater need for services, which is the reason that the campaign goal was raised to help meet the needs for the services in Jamestown.
She said Jamestown United Way has moved toward the Community Impact model. This model will allow the United Way to show the community—through agency collaboration—how it impacts the community.
United Way’s work is focused on the building blocks for a good life:

– Helping Children and Youth Achieve Their Potential
Income
– Promoting Financial Stability and Independence
Health
– Improving People’s Health
The United Way currently helps to fund 19 agencies some of which include: Buffalo Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, Boy & Girl Scouts, Camp Rokiwan, Safe Shelter, RSVP, James River Family YMCA, Arts After School which is a program for children within the Jamestown Fine Arts Association, and Consumer Credit Counseling.
99% of the money donated to the United Way stays in Jamestown and Stutsman County.
The Jamestown United Way Board consists of an 18 member Board of Directors. This year the President is Megan Aldinger, 1st Vice President Carla Edinger, 2nd Vice President Jessica Haak, Treasurer, Rebecca Kercher, and Secretary/Publicity, Dana Wallace. Board members can serve two consecutive three year terms and then are required to sit out, so thet are always looking for new board members who bring new ideas and energy to the board.
The United Way theme this year is “United We Can.”
Previously fundraisers this yeat have included, an Outdoor Movie Event at McElroy Park, and a Bake Sale at the Buffalo Mall, with events show community support.
Dana added that the past two campaigns have greatly exceeded expectations and the citizens of Jamestown and Stutsman County have been so supportive. The goal has gotten larger this year, but they hope to not only meet it, but exceed it.
Upcoming events or fundraisers taking place in the coming months, includes, a pending spring event.
She pointed out that the best way to keep up with Jamestown United Way Events is on facebook at United Way of Stutsman County for updates.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have suspended the water search for a snowmobiler who is believed to have gone through the ice on the Sheyenne River at West Fargo.
Thirty-four-year-old Cole Schwindt, of Moorhead, Minnesota, has been missing since Dec. 2. Divers later found his snowmobile submerged in the river, and police say he is believed drowned.
Searches have been conducted using boats, dogs, divers and electronic equipment.
Foot searches will continue in the area, but police say water searches won’t resume until spring
Jamestown City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says, the local water rescue team assisted at the scene six times during the search.
He says the Jamestown Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) that assisted in the search was damaged, likely a circuit board, and that officials are getting an estimate on the repair costs which will be submitted to insurance.
He stresses that Jamestown has a “loaner” ROV and is ready for use, if called upon.
He pointed out that the ROV manufacturer, Video Ray, located in Pennsylvania over-nighted a new ROV at no chargeon Friday and the North Dakota Highway Patrol in Jamestown brought the ROV to the scene of the river search so the operation could continue.
Valley City (CSi) North Dakota Congressman, Kevin Cramer will visit Valley City on Thursday December 18th, at 11:23 a.m. at Valley City High School.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Bismarck police are investigating the theft of name brand headphones valued at more than $3,500.
Police say a man and a woman stole 18 “Beats By Dre” headphones from a Best Buy store. Witnesses saw the pair putting the wireless headphones into duffel bags before they left the store.
The male suspect was seen talking on a cellphone as he waked out of the building.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have charged a Bismarck man with escape after they say he walked away from the Bismarck Transition Center. 36-year-old Joshua Hiler was arrested in a Wal-Mart parking lot after he walked away from the center on Saturday. The center is a community-based correctional program that aims to help nonviolent offenders transition back into the community. Hiler was there for past drug felonies, including intent to deliver methamphetamine.
Hiler was also charged with theft of property after police say he stole a pair of pants.
Online jail records didn’t indicate an attorney.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man is charged in South Central District Court with human trafficking.
Thirty-two-year-old Steven Ezeofor, of Wahpeton, was arrested last week at a Bismarck motel where he and a woman were staying. The woman told police she was a prostitute.
Authorities say Ezeofor had more than $13,000 in his possession and the woman had $3.
The operation was uncovered by Bismarck police who found an advertisement on an online classifieds website frequented by human traffickers and prostitutes.
Court documents do not list a lawyer for Ezeofor, who is charged with a Class A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. A preliminary hearing has not been scheduled.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Bismarck man accused of attempting to stab and strangle his wife in an argument over a vehicle title has pleaded not guilty.
Fifty-four-year-old Terry Link appeared in South Central District Court Monday on charges of attempted murder, interfering with an emergency call and preventing arrest.
Authorities say Link held his wife down and attempted to strangle her until she agreed to give him the title, and later threatened her with a kitchen knife. A police officer punched Link in the face when he wouldn’t let go of the victim.
The attempted murder charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
Link is being held in a Bismarck jail on $250,000 cash bond.
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – A former bouncer at a Williston strip club has pleaded not guilty to murder. Kyle Siler initially was charged with the aggravated assault in the August death of Dean Niederklopfer. The charge was upgraded to murder when Niederklopfer died from his injuries.
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) – A Colorado man has been sentenced to 80 years in prison for killing a Montana teacher in the Northern Plains oil patch.
Court officials say Montana District Judge Richard Simonton sentenced 50-year-old Lester Van Waters Jr. on Monday in Sidney, Montana. An additional 20 years in prison was suspended.
Waters pleaded guilty last year to deliberate homicide by accountability.
Authorities said he and an accomplice killed 43-year-old Sidney High School math teacher Sherry Arnold during an attempted abduction. Her body was found more than two months later buried in a rural area of North Dakota.
The case tragically illustrated the dramatic social changes that have come with an oil boom that’s boosted the region’s economy.
The accomplice pleaded guilty last month to deliberate homicide. His sentencing has not been scheduled.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s top prison administrator wants counties to share in state penitentiary costs.
The proposal by Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation director Leann Bertsch is being met with stiff opposition from local officials, law enforcement, judges and prosecutors.
Bertsch wants the Legislature to set a county-by-county allocation at state prison facilities using a formula based on the population of each county. Once a county exceeds the allocation, it would have to help pay prison costs.
Bertsch says some judges are sentencing people to prison when they should just be sentenced to time in county jails. She says it’s being done to save money and jail space.
Judges and prosecutors say there is no evidence of that happening.
COLFAX, N.D. (AP) – Fire damage to a grain elevator complex in Colfax is expected to surpass $1 million.
Authorities are still searching for the cause of the Dec. 6 blaze that destroyed the Farmers Elevator’s main structure and offices and two structures that together contained about 170,000 bushels of grain.
The fire did not damage the elevator’s grain loading facility or its chemical and fertilizer operation. Elevator board member Don Hendrickson says the facility has set up a temporary office. The elevator was able to accept barley last week and could begin accepting corn as early as the middle of this week.
The board plans to rebuild the destroyed structures, using steel instead of wood.
No one was hurt in the fire.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Burleigh County officials have hired a firm to design a roundabout in an effort to ease traffic congestion.
The Burleigh County Commission approved a $370,000 contract with Bartlett & West on Monday to design and oversee construction of whichever project the county chooses for the intersection of Highway 10 and 66th Street.
County Engineer Marcus Hall says officials may consider projects other than a roundabout, including stop signs or traffic lights. He says the county must follow a public hearing process to discuss the firm’s recommendations because federal funds are involved.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Wild Card 2 ticket sold in North Dakota has won a jackpot worth nearly $328,000.
North Dakota lottery officials say the ticket sold in Minot matched all five white balls and the Wild Card in Saturday’s drawing. The winning numbers were 9, 11, 12, 24 and 26, and the Wild Card was the ace of diamonds.
The odds of winning the Wild Card 2 jackpot are 1 in about 1.9 million. The winner has about six months to claim the prize.
Wild Card 2 is played in the Dakotas, Montana and Idaho. The jackpot starts over at $200,000 for the next drawing, on Wednesday.

CHICAGO (AP) – Drew Brees threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns as the New Orleans thumped the Chicago Bears 31-15 to regain the NFC South lead, one win ahead of Carolina. Josh Hill had two TD receptions and Pierre Thomas caught five passes for 83 yards while the Saints recorded seven sacks and three interceptions against Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. Mark Ingram’s 15-yard scoring run with 1:57 remaining clinched the victory for the 6-8 Saints.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Minnesota senior center Maurice Walker has won Big Ten Player of the Week honors. Walker averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds. 2.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game as the Gophers went 2-0 against North Dakota and Southern last week. It’s Walker’s first career Big Ten Player of the Week award.
UNDATED (AP) – Kentucky’s Wildcats remain the unanimous choice as No. 1 in The Associated Press Top-25 men’s basketball poll. The 11-0 ‘Cats got all 65 first-place votes for the second straight week.
Duke, Arizona, Louisville and Wisconsin round out the top five, followed by Virginia, Villanova, Gonzaga, Texas and Kansas.
The only poll newcomer is No. 25 Michigan State, ranked again after a one-week absence. Northern Iowa dropped out after a double-overtime loss to VCU.
For the women, South Carolina stays No. 1 in the AP poll for the fourth straight week after a 62-point win in its lone game last week.

MINNEAPOLS (AP) – The NFL Players Association has filed a federal lawsuit for Adrian Peterson, asking the court to dismiss an arbitrator’s decision to uphold the NFL’s punishment of the Minnesota running back. Peterson was suspended without pay for the remaining six games of this season by Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL’) as a result of the child-abuse case that has kept the six-time Pro Bowl pick out of all but one game this year.
IRVING, Texas (AP) – Cowboys running back and NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray needs surgery after breaking his hand in Sunday’s win over the Eagles in Philadelphia. Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones says it is difficult to expect Murray to play Sunday against Indianapolis.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – The Sacramento Kings have fired head coach Michael Malone and replaced him with Ty Corbin on an interim basis. Sacramento Kings general manager Pete D’Alessandro says the move was made over philosophical differences over the team’s style of play. The Kings are 11-13 after going 28-54 last season, Malone’s first with the club.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) – Dallas Eakins (AY’-kihnz) has been fired as coach of the Edmonton Oilers, one day after losing for the 15th time in their last 16 games.
General manager Craig MacTavish will coach the team until the job is given to Todd Nelson, who is being promoted to interim head coach from Edmonton’s AHL affiliate in Oklahoma City.

NEW YORK (AP) – The New York Yankees have re-signed third baseman Chase Headley to a four-year, $52 million contract, leaving Alex Rodriguez without a position. Headley said the Yankees assured him the third base job was his after hitting .262 with six homers and 17 RBIs in 191 at-bats for New York last season. Headley came over to the Yanks from San Diego last summer while Rodriguez served his one-year suspension for violations of baseball’s drug agreement and labor contract.
The White Sox finalized a $42 million, three-year contract with free agent Melky Cabrera. The 30-year-old left fielder hit .301 with 16 homers and 73 RBIs in 139 games with Toronto last season.

NASCAR-VICKERS…
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – NASCAR driver Brian Vickers underwent a second surgery on Saturday to repair a hole in his heart. The procedure was done after tests revealed his body was rejecting the artificial patch he received in a 2010 procedure to fix the hole in his heart.
The recovery period will cause him to miss the start of the 2015 season.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) – Pakistani officials say many of the dozens killed today in a Taliban attack on a military school in the city of Peshawar were children and teenagers. The death toll has risen to at least 126, and dozens more children have been wounded. The still-unfolding violence began in the morning hours, with about half a dozen gunmen bursting into the school. Pakistani troops have been exchanging fire with the attackers.
SYDNEY (AP) – Authorities in Australia say a gunman who took 17 people hostage at a Sydney cafe had been out of jail on bail even though he was facing serious charges. Fifty-year-old Man Haron Monis was accused of helping murder his former wife and sexually assaulting a woman in 2002. New South Wales Premier Mike Baird says, “We are all outraged that this guy was on the street.” Monis was killed when police stormed the cafe earlier today. Two hostages were also killed.
PENNSBURG, Pa. (AP) – A Pennsylvania woman allegedly shot and killed by her ex-husband had told neighbors that she had feared her husband would come after her. Nicole Stone and five of her relatives were found dead yesterday at three homes in the suburban Philadelphia area. Marine veteran Bradley Michael Stone is now being hunted by police. Authorities say the Stones had been fighting over custody of their two children.
BOSTON (AP) – The organizers of Boston’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade have voted to allow a group representing gay veterans to march next year. It’s a dramatic turnaround for an organization that has long resisted the inclusion of gays. The South Boston Allied War Veterans Council won a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1995, upholding their right to ban gay groups from the annual parade. But it voted 5-4 last night to allow the group OutVets to march.
CINCINNATI (AP) – There’s nothing like a DIY to save money. Ohio’s Hamilton County has adopted a do-it-yourself approach to fix stadium seats in the Great American Ball Park that are unexpectedly falling apart. Facing costs as high as $5 million, the county has hired a local firm to design new seat molds, it’s found a plastics company to make the backs and bottoms and it’s paying ex-jail inmates and others about $10 an hour to install them in the Cincinnati Reds’ stadium. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the DIY project will save taxpayers about $3.7 million.
