FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police have arrested a suspect in a bank robbery, carjacking and kidnapping case in the neighboring Minnesota city of Moorhead.

The 52-year-old Fargo man was taken into custody Tuesday evening at a south Fargo motel. Formal charges were pending.

Authorities say that a man with a gun demanded cash from a Wells Fargo branch in a Moorhead grocery store about midday Monday. The suspect then went to a liquor store across the street, stole a pickup truck with the driver still inside and fled back to Fargo.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A 17-year-old boy is dead after a vehicle crash just south of Fargo.

The Highway Patrol did not immediately identify the victim, who was found dead at the scene shortly after noon on Tuesday.

Authorities say the car the teen was driving failed to negotiate a curve on a rural road, went into the ditch, down an embankment and struck a tree. The date and time of the crash was not immediately determined.

HEBRON, N.D. (AP) – The Morton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a burglary at Hebron’s City Hall.

Authorities say someone pried open a metal door to gain access and got away with about $350 in cash and some keys.

The city auditor discovered the break-in Monday morning. Authorities did not immediately identify any suspects.

ROLLA, N.D. (AP) – A northern North Dakota man accused of sexually abusing a woman seven years ago has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

47-year-old Lorry Van Chase was sentenced after a Rolla jury convicted him of gross sexual imposition in the fall.

The Dunseith man was charged nearly six years after the crime when a woman told authorities that he had forced her to have sex with him in the Turtle Mountains.

Northeast District Judge Michael Sturdevant says Chase’s criminal history, including a nearly 11-year sentence on kidnapping and assault charges, influenced his decision on the length of the sentence he imposed on Chase.

Chase’s attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Firefighters have put out a blaze at a Bismarck home that also caught on fire last month.

Bismarck Fire Department Deputy Chief Dean Meyer says  emergency personnel responded to the home Tuesday morning and had the blaze “knocked down pretty quickly.” A fire at that home on Nov. 6 caused an estimated $35,000 in damage and displaced a family.

Meyer says it’s too early to determine the extent of the damage caused by Tuesday’s blaze.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Authorities in eastern North Dakota say a 34-year-old man in possession of more than 4 pounds of marijuana has been arrested. Sgt. Tara Morris with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office says Brian Flem is facing charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under suspension. Flem was arrested around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday after deputies made a traffic stop on Interstate 94.

WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – A teacher and coach in Wahpeton who was accused of abusing two elementary school students has been cleared to return to work, though under certain conditions.

The male teacher was never charged with a crime. He was, however, put on administrative leave earlier this month while authorities investigated.

The teacher was accused by parents of pushing two fifth-grade boys against a wall and cussing at them. School district administrators have decided to reinstate the teacher and not dock him any pay after an investigation by school, police and social services officials.

However, the report also says the teacher’s conduct was inappropriate. He is being required to get counseling on how to handle stressful interactions with students.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The federal government says over 8,500 North Dakota residents signed up for health insurance in the first month of the Affordable Care Act’s second enrollment period.

The second enrollment season for President Barack Obama’s signature health care law began Nov. 15 and runs through Feb. 15. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday said 8,528 people selected plans in North Dakota by the Dec. 15 deadline for coverage beginning Jan. 1. Of those, 61 percent re-enrolled in plans and 39 percent signed up for the first time.

About 88 percent of those choosing plans in the first month were deemed eligible for financial assistance.

Nationwide, over 4 million people signed up for the first time or re-enrolled in coverage for 2015 during the open enrollment’s first month.

WASHBURN, N.D. (AP) – The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Washburn will be offering free admission for the first several weeks of 2015.

The center will offer free admission from Friday through March 15. The center also will unveil a new temporary exhibit that shows how the Lewis and Clark expedition has been represented in art.

Fort Mandan, which is just west of Washburn, was the winter home of the Lewis and Clark expedition during its 1804 journey west.

In sports…

Jamestown (CSi) University of Jamestown head volleyball coach Jon Hegerle has announced the signing of Morgan Hensch of Fergus Falls MN who will join the Jimmies in the 2015-2016 season.

Hensch played volleyball for two years at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND before transferring to the University of Jamestown. At NDSCS, Hensch was second in career kills at 789 and 3rd in hitting percentage at .369. For the 2014 season, she had 48 blocks, 130 digs, and 5 aces. She was part of the Mon-Dak Conference and was Region XIII MVP while making the NJCAA All-American 2nd Team.

Coach Hegerle says of Hensch, “We are thrilled that Morgan will be joining our program this spring! I have watched Morgan the past two years develop as a player and a teammate and I am looking forward to her continued growth at the University of Jamestown. Skill wise, Morgan will add experience and power to our front row. More importantly, Morgan has demonstrated the kind of team-first character that has been the strength of our program. I am happy that Morgan has committed to pursuing her athletic and academic goals as a Jimmie!”

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A group deciding the best way to choose a new nickname for the University of North Dakota has decided it needs more time.

The UND Nickname and Logo Process Recommendation Task Force was to give a report to university President Robert Kelley by the end of the year. UND issued a statement Tuesday saying the group voted to extend the deadline.

A recommendation now will come sometime in January. The task force is expected to suggest Kelley name another committee to ultimately choose a new nickname.

The state Legislature put a three-year moratorium on replacing the “Fighting Sioux” nickname after residents voted overwhelmingly in 2012 to dump the moniker. That ended a decades-old debate that included the threat of sanctions from the NCAA, which deemed the nickname “hostile and abusive.”
