FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is working to determine whether burglaries in three towns are related.

Authorities say businesses were burglarized early Wednesday in Hunter, Arthur and Grandin.

The sheriff’s office did not say what was taken from the businesses. The investigation is continuing.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Two men are in custody after a North Dakota Highway Patrol trooper discovered $2.5 million worth of heroin during a traffic stop.

Court Records show Frank Villa and Charles Ahumada have been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture or deliver. Villa has also been charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Authorities say a deputy pulled over a car with Nevada license plates Monday on Interstate 94. A K-9 unit was used to search the car and the deputy located 4.5 pounds of heroin that had been wrapped in three separate bricks. Authorities say the street value of the drug is $2.5 million.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A woman who pleaded not guilty in state court to running a prostitution parlor in Minot has now pleaded not guilty to similar charges in federal court.

Thirty-two-year-old Trina Nguyen (wihn) is accused of operating a sex business in Dickinson after posting bond on the state charges filed in 2013.

Her co-defendant also appeared in federal court Monday, but 32-year-old Loc Tran didn’t enter a plea. Tran asked for a Vietnamese interpreter, and Magistrate Judge Charles Miller granted the request.

Tran and Nguyen face federal charges including racketeering and extortion stemming from allegations that they lured women from California to work as prostitutes in western North Dakota. State charges were dismissed when federal prosecutors took jurisdiction in the case.

Trial for Nguyen is scheduled to begin March 3 in Bismarck.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Basin Electric Power Cooperative has signed deals to buy power from two new wind farms in North Dakota.

The Bismarck-based utility says the combined generating capacity is 300 megawatts, enough to power about 300,000 homes. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

Florida-based NextEra Energy Resources is developing the Dickinson Wind Energy Center near Richardton, and Kansas-based Tradewind Energy will be developing the Lindahl Wind Project near Tioga. Both wind farms will be in western North Dakota.

Basin Electric supplies electricity to 137 member rural electric systems in Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Those member systems distribute electricity to about 2.8 million consumers.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – City officials in Minot are working with a local developer to try to revive construction of two downtown parking ramps in the spring.

Two parking lots were torn up in November 2013 so construction could begin on the ramps that are to provide 225 parking spaces. But activity stopped shortly after when subcontractors left after not getting paid.

The City Council last October approved changes to its agreement with Cypress Development in an effort to help the developer get more financing. The new agreement extends the city’s property lease with Cypress from four years to nine years to allow more time to complete the full $27 million project which also includes retail and residential development.

A  final agreement could be reached next month.

GARRISON, N.D. (AP) – Residents of Garrison in February will vote in a fourth school bond election in less than two years.

The Feb. 5 ballot measure asks voters to approve $5.9 million for expansion projects at the town’s elementary school and high school.

Residents in the community of about 1,450 people have rejected a school expansion three previous times. But Superintendent Steve Brannan says the proposal lost by just seven votes in the most recent election on Nov. 4, so school officials will try again.

A $5.9 million bond issue would raise property taxes for the owner of a $150,000 home by about $150 per year.

In world and national news…

PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia (AP) – A search and rescue coordinator in Indonesia says the wreckage that’s been found Wednesday had drifted more than 30 miles from where it was Tuesday. And he says bodies of some of the 162 victims of Sunday’s crash of an AirAsia flight will likely end up on beaches. Bad weather, choppy seas and strong currents have kept divers out of the water today.

BRINDISI, Italy (AP) – Bad weather in the Adriatic Sea is thwarting efforts to tow a fire-ravaged ferry to Italy. Authorities want to search it for more possible dead and investigate the cause of the blaze that killed at least 11 people. A prosecutor told the ANSA news agency that 98 people are still unaccounted for. It’s not clear if they ever boarded the ferry or perhaps died in the fire or the sea.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) – The governor of Maryland says he is going to commute the capital sentences of the state’s last four inmates on death row to life in prison. The outgoing Democratic governor says leaving the death sentences in place “does not serve the public good of the people of Maryland.” Two years ago, the state legislature abolished the death penalty, making the ultimate sentence in new cases life in prison without the possibility of parole. That left four previously sentenced inmates on death row.

HAVANA (AP) – The State Department is condemning the first coordinated crackdown on Cuban dissidents since the two countries declared they were moving toward full relations. Dissidents said Cuban officials detained dozens of members of the political opposition ahead of a protest art performance yesterday that was seen as a test of tolerance for dissent. One activist says most were held briefly. An artist had planned to set up an open microphone for anyone to speak in a public plaza, but the event was never held. A dissident newspaper says she was one of the people detained.

MANILA (AP) – A New Year’s Eve concert in the Philippines was supposed to feature Chris Brown — but the singer has sent his regrets.
