Jamestown (CSi) This evening Jamestown Public Schools will host the next community meeting at 6:30-p.m., at the Jamestown Middle School, Thompson Room.
On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Jamestown Public School Superintendent Rob Lech said, public input is being solicited concerning the the long-range facilities planning, including a facilities assessment, staff and community engagement, and ultimately assistance with approving the long-range facility plan, that would be adopted by the Jamestown Public School Board.
A boundary analysis will be made for K-5 schools, to meet capacity limits.
He said the input is needed as the school district makes difficult decisions regarding facilities, short-term and long-term. The community input will help the school district understand what students and the community needs, and the level of support for each of these concepts.
Lech added that the January 20th public meeting will give the school district perspectives necessary to make the best possible decisions for Jamestown Public Schools.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Public School Board Monday evening heard a report from Superintendent Rob Lech concerning a meeting he had with Jamestown officials to find solutions to congested traffic problems at the middle school bus stop and the high school parking lot.
Any changes under consideration would go into effect next school year.
One idea is to move the bus stop to the back of the middle school to alleviate congestion with parents who are dropping off or picking up students in the same area.
Also discussed is a one-way entrance into the high school parking lot from 12th Avenue Northeast and a one-way exit onto 13th Street Northeast.
Lech said he also wants more consistent signage throughout the district and and removing some of the diagonal parking spaces along 3rd Street Southeast to improve the field of vision around the middle school.
Also at the meeting Carol Ulrich, whose children both attend school at Jamestown Public Schools, voiced her concerns about data that will be collected on students under the new Common Core standards for education
She said the Common Core tests go beyond checking a child’s proficiency in math or English in that they collect psychological and behavior assessments on students as well.
Lech said he understands the concerns over data privacy, and school district employees are concerned about protecting their own data as well as the data of the students.
He pointed out that the state Department of Public Instruction has a data advisory team working on the implementation of the Common Core standards, and he was “very confident that they have a high level of scrutiny of where that data goes.”
The meeting was recorded by CSi 10 THE REPLAY CHANNEL, with replays starting Tuesday.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Residents of a 46-unit apartment building in Fargo were evacuated for a time after a kitchen fire in one of the units.
Officials say no one was hurt in the incident about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. It took firefighters only 10 minutes to put out the flames, but damage was estimated at about $150,000.
All tenants were able to return to the three-story building except for those in the apartment where the fire started and those in a neighboring apartment. The Red Cross was arranging temporary housing.
Investigators believe the fire started on the kitchen stove.
ROSS, N.D. (AP) – Two men were hospitalized with severe burns after a fire in a building at an oil well in Mountrail County.
The Sheriff’s Department says 27-year-old Kyle Stipcich and 30-year-old Jonathan Henderson were injured Friday afternoon at the well southwest of Ross.
Stipcich was flown to the Regions Hospital burn unit in St. Paul, Minnesota, for treatment, and Henderson was taken to Trinity Hospital in Minot.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot police are searching for two males who allegedly robbed a man and then fired shots at him when he fled.
Authorities say the 27-year-old victim was outside smoking late Friday when he was approached by the two males, held at gunpoint and robbed of his wallet and other belongings “in an attempt to settle a debt.”
Police say the man ran from the scene, and the suspects fired four or five shots at him. He was not hit, but police say a neighbor who also was outside at the time was nearly struck by a bullet that hit her house.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A man who led police on a vehicle chase through a North Dakota town and then resisted arrest has been sentenced to a year and a half in federal prison.
Authorities say Dezmond Andres Sr. was pulled over for a traffic violation near New Town in April 2013, but sped off after a passenger left the vehicle. Police said other motorists were forced off the road during the chase. Andres eventually stopped after his front tires blew out.
Court documents show that Andres tried to take refuge in a semi-trailer and was eventually subdued with use of a Taser.
Andres pleaded guilty earlier to resisting a federal officer.
The defendant’s attorney was not available for comment.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Minot lawmaker is pushing a measure that would give state income tax breaks to low-wage earners in North Dakota.
Republican Sen. David Houge says single people earning less than $36,250 would pay no state income tax under his proposal. A married couple filing jointly would pay no income tax if their wages are less than $62,600.
Houge told the Senate Finance and Taxation Committee on Tuesday that the income tax cut would help people with low incomes and force lawmakers to control spending.
Houge says the measure would cost the state an estimated $151 million annually in lost revenues.
The state Tax Department estimates there are about 435,000 North Dakotans who file state income taxes. Houge’s proposed legislation would affect about 170,000 low-wage earners.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota lawmakers are considering a proposal that would allow elected public officials to carry firearms at the state Capitol and other public buildings.
Current North Dakota law forbids carrying concealed weapons in public places. There are exemptions for law enforcement officers and others.
The measure is sponsored by 12 Republican lawmakers. Rep. Ben Koppelman of West Fargo is the bill’s primary sponsor.
The proposal would require the elected official to have a valid concealed weapons license to pack a gun in a public building.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Minnesota man accused of running an illegal gambling operation in North Dakota has reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors.
Court documents show Gerald Greenfield, of Bloomington, Minnesota, plans to plead guilty to transmitting wager information and money laundering. Details of the plea agreement have not been released.
Greenfield is charged in federal court with three counts, including conducting a sports betting business and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – A Dallas-based oil company says someone has vandalized one of its oil well sites near Watford City, causing more than 250 barrels of oil to be released.
Petro-Hunt L.L.C. reported Monday that 260 barrels of oil were released, contained and recovered at a site about 25 miles northeast of Watford City.
Company spokesman Fred Hosey says someone came onto their unsecured site, broke the seals on the tank valves and opened them. He says the oil was released only within a protective berm.
Hosey says while vandalism isn’t common at their sites, it does happen. He says occasionally it’s a local with a bone to pick, but most of the time authorities never find the culprits.
The incident has been reported and the local authorities are investigating.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state oil authorities say all but five barrels of brine have been cleaned up from a spill that occurred near Tioga this weekend.
The North Dakota Oil and Gas Division says the Hess Corporation reported on Saturday that 320 barrels of brine were released and contained at the BLDU central tank facility in Williams County.
Brine is an unwanted byproduct of oil production and is considered an environmental hazard by the state. It is many times saltier than sea water and can easily kill vegetation exposed to it.
The company says the cause of the spill was a leaking pipe.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A new rule aimed at curbing the wasteful burning of natural gas in North Dakota and one that would make crude oil safer for shipment would be void under a proposal by a group of Republican lawmakers.
The three-member North Dakota Industrial Commission that includes GOP Gov. Jack Dalrymple approved the two regulations last year.
GOP Rep. Keith Kempenich of Bowman is pushing the measure that would give lawmakers more oversight in oil-related rulemaking. Kempenich told a Legislative committee Monday that such rules should have gone through Legislature’s Administrative Rules Committee, which has the power to block, change or delay new regulations.
State Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms says the Industrial Commission’s process was thorough. Helms says voiding the new rules would have serious fiscal consequences for the state.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – People who want to serve on North Dakota’s Board of Higher Education can apply for a vacancy created by the departure of Chairwoman Kirsten Diederich.
The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Jan. 30. The committee will meet Feb. 4 to forward three nominations to the governor. The governor’s appointment must be confirmed by the state Senate.
Diederich announced earlier this month that she was stepping down ahead of what was expected to be a contentious confirmation hearing for a second term.
The Board of Higher Education oversees the state’s 11 public colleges and universities. It has eight voting members.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The number of lobbyists registered for North Dakota’s 64th legislative session is down significantly compared to the last three sessions.
The drop comes despite an anticipated record budget this session.
Data from the North Dakota Secretary of State’s office show 380 lobbyists representing 709 organizations are registered this year.
Last session, there were 574 registered lobbyists representing 942 organizations.
Data show 555 lobbyists were registered for the 62nd legislative session, representing 890 organizations.
The session before that, there were 591 lobbyists representing 963 organizations.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The acting mayor of North Dakota’s largest city says he wants the job on a permanent basis.
Tim Mahoney announced Monday that he is officially running in the special election for Fargo mayor, tentatively set for April. Mahoney took over the position when Mayor Dennis Walaker died in December after a battle with kidney cancer.
Brad Wimmer, a former city commissioner who lost to Walaker in the June election, is also a candidate for mayor.
DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) – The cost of a new oil refinery near Dickinson is rising due to delays in getting the facility up to full production.
The Dakota Prairie Refinery started accepting crude late last year, but bitter cold weather and electrical system revisions have pushed back full production until at least April.
The plant is now expected to cost more than $400 million, about $50 million more than the previous estimate.
Bismarck-based MDU Resources Group and Indianapolis-based Calumet Specialty Products Partners broke ground on the refinery in March 2013. Once it is fully operational, it will process 20,000 barrels of oil each day into 7,000 barrels of diesel fuel and other products.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Hundreds of Bismarck area residents are rallying to save a local pet cemetery slated for closure. Owner Jarod Obering recently announced Billie’s Meadow Pet Cemetery in Bismarck will be closing to the public within the next several months. He says the property has changed hands three times within the past year and he no longer has access to equipment needed to maintain the cemetery.
