Common Core outlines what skills students in kindergarten through 12th grade should learn to be ready for college and careers upon graduation. Common Core replaces standards that varied state-to-state.

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (AP) – Don’t hate Phil, he’s just the messenger. Pennsylvania’s most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, delivered the weather forecast shortly before 7:30 Eastern Time this morning, predicting six more weeks of winter. His handlers say the furry rodent saw his shadow. German legend is that if the groundhog does not see its shadow, spring comes early.

BOSTON (AP) – Another winter storm for the Northeast this morning. Snow that left 1  1/2 feet of snow in the Chicago area and blanketed much of the Plains and Midwest, moved slowly eastward overnight through the Ohio Valley into Pennsylvania and western New York state. Boston could get up to 16 inches of snow and Albany, New York, up to 14.

TOKYO (AP) – Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh ah-bay) is defending his policy toward terrorism, following the beheading of a Japanese journalist at the hands of the Islamic State group. Some Japanese lawmakers have questioned Abe’s announcement of $200 million in non-military aid for the fight against the Islamic State group, made just days before militants demanded a $200 million ransom for two hostages. Abe said today, “The terrorists are criminals.” He says, “We are determined to pursue them and hold them accountable.”

WASHINGTON (AP) – Government and aviation industry officials from dozens of countries are meeting in Montreal this week to talk about how to keep from losing airliners like the one that vanished without a trace in Asia and another shot down in eastern Ukraine. It is only the second high-level safety conference in the 70-year history of the U.N. agency, the International Civil Aviation Organization.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – The former Korean Air executive on trial for having an inflight tantrum over macadamia nuts, says she flipped out as a result of being devoted to her work. Cho Hyun-ah told a court in Seoul today that her behavior was “wrong” but that she still believes the cabin crew in first-class did not follow proper procedures when she was served macadamia nuts in a bag instead of on a dish. Cho, who’s also the daughter of Korean Air’s chairman, has pleaded not guilty to charges of violating aviation safety law.
