MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) – Moorhead, Minnesota police plan to update the public early next week on the investigation into the killing of a North Dakota State University student.
The Moorhead Police Department said Wednesday it has received the Ramsey County medical examiner’s final autopsy report on 18-year-old freshman Thomas Bearson of Sartell. Bearson’s body was found outside a recreational vehicle store in Moorhead on Sept. 23, three days after he was last seen at a party about six blocks from his dorm in Fargo, North Dakota.
Moorhead police Lieutenant Tory Jacobson says investigators have started reviewing the medical report. Police tentatively plan a news conference Monday.
No arrests have been made, and police have not identified a suspect or motive.
Authorities also have not found Bearson’s missing mobile phone and tennis shoe.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is looking into reports of election tampering in the Maple Valley School District.
A proposed $10.3 million bond issue to fund a new school in Tower City failed by just a few votes last month.
Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney says local authorities turned over to the BCI reports of election workers and others allegedly trying to influence voters inside a polling site. That would be illegal under state law.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – People suffering chronic pain and parents of critically ill children pleaded with North Dakota lawmakers to legalize medical marijuana in the state. The House Human Services Committee took testimony yesterday on a bill that would allow marijuana or cannabis-related products for medical use. Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem opposes the measure, saying the bill doesn’t address numerous regulatory and public safety concerns.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Republican lawmaker whose district is in North Dakota’s top oil-producing regions wants to expand the state Industrial Commission from three members to five.
The commission oversees the state Department of Mineral Resources, North Dakota’s oil and gas regulatory agency. Besides Gov. Jack Dalrymple, its other members are Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring and Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem.
Rep. Keith Kempenich is pushing legislation to add the head of the Public Service Commission and the state tax commissioner to the panel. He says the additional members could provide more input on financial impacts of energy production and the regulation of pipeline infrastructure.
The House Political Subdivisions Committee is slated to hear testimony on the bill Thursday.
GARRISON, N.D. (AP) – Garrison residents are deciding the fate of a proposed $5.9 million school bond.
It’s the fourth school bond election in less than two years in the central North Dakota community of about 1,450 people. If approved Thursday, the money would pay for expansion projects at the town’s elementary school and high school.
Garrison voters rejected school bonds in November 2012, October 2013 and November 2014.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Minot residents might vote this spring on a proposed $88 million aquatic and recreation center.
The city’s Park Board has approved language for a ballot measure calling for a tax system change to pay for the 450,000-square foot facility. Residents would pay higher city sales taxes but lower property taxes. If the City Council agrees, the matter could go to voters in April.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Williston resident has claimed a Powerball prize worth $1 million.
The North Dakota Lottery says the winner drew the ticket on Saturday and claimed his prize Wednesday in Bismarck. The winner has elected to remain anonymous.

And French President Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH’ oh-LAWND’) and German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN’-geh-lah MEHR’-kuhl) say they’ll travel to Kiev and Moscow with the proposal they say is “based on the territorial integrity of Ukraine.” Secretary of State John Kerry is also in Ukraine to show support for the government.
BAGHDAD (AP) – After several years, Iraq’s prime minister is lifting the curfew in Baghdad. The government says the midnight to 5 a.m. curfew, first implemented in 2004, will be lifted starting Saturday. The move appears to be aimed at restoring a sense of normalcy to the capital, where residents enjoyed a vibrant night life before the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein. The curfew was imposed as security deteriorated following his ouster.
PARIS (AP) – Paris is sharply restricting the filming of action movies on its streets. The city has been the stage for some of the most high-octane movie sequences, but officials now fear that actors could be mistaken for police, and chase scenes may be confused for the real thing. Many people are still on edge following last month’s terror attacks on the staff of the newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher market.
