BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The average retail price of a gallon of gasoline in the Dakotas has crept back above the $2 mark.
GasBuddy.com reports that the average price in North Dakota has risen nearly 11 cents per gallon in the past week, to $2.08. In South Dakota, the average price has risen about the same, to $2.02.
Officials cite rising oil prices and worries about worker strikes at refineries.
The national average increased nearly 13 cents per gallon over the week, to $2.17. But that’s still more than $1.10 cheaper than last year at this time.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. is asking North Dakota regulators to approve a natural gas rate increase.
MDU is seeking a 3.4 percent overall rate increase, which would raise $4.3 million a year more than current rates. If approved by the Public Service Commission, it would increase the monthly bill of residential customers by an average of about $3.50.
The utility says it needs the rate increase to cover the cost of increased investment in natural gas facilities. MDU’s natural gas investment in the state is projected to be $212 million by the end of the year, up 15 percent from last year.
MDU serves about 105,000 natural gas customers in 74 North Dakota communities.
NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) – A New Town man is dead after a one-vehicle crash over the weekend about 7 miles northwest of the city.
The Highway Patrol says 24-year-old Christopher Westbrook was driving a car that went into the ditch off state Highway 1804 about 1:45 a.m. Sunday and rolled several times.
Authorities say Westbrook was thrown from the vehicle and pinned underneath. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the car was taken to a Minot hospital with what the patrol called “incapacitating injuries.”
MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Formal charges are pending against a Deering man accused of driving under the influence in Minot and terrorizing another motorist with a gun.
Police say the 23-year-old man allegedly pointed a gun toward another driver about 1 a.m. Saturday on Broadway, one of the city’s main arteries. Authorities say the man had two guns in his vehicle when he was arrested, and one was loaded.
The man was arrested on charges of DUI, terrorizing and carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Utah woman who worked in the North Dakota oil fields has filed a federal lawsuit against her former employer, alleging gender discrimination and equal pay violations.
Cindy Marchello, of Ogden, Utah, filed the lawsuit Monday in federal district court in North Dakota.
Marchello started working as a pump operator for Texas-based C&J Energy Services Inc. in October of 2012. She says her manager later gave her a desk job because it was “too dangerous” and “too cold” for her in the field.
Marchello also alleges that she was paid less than her male counterparts and that her employers threatened to fire her if she spoke out.
Marchello is being represented by Minneapolis-based Halunen Law.
A representative from C&J Energy Services didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Senate already has approved $1.1 billion in special funding so that infrastructure projects can begin by this summer.
The measure is slated to go before the House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday.
The “surge funding” bill that would fast-track funding to cities, school districts and communities affected by North Dakota’s exploding growth.
House budget writers have asked cities, counties and townships to provide a detailed listing of “shovel ready” projects. They also are requesting the estimated cost of each project that would be completed this year.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Leith officials think a charge of failing to control or report a dangerous fire filed against Mayor Ryan Schock is a case of “retribution” by Grant County State’s Attorney Todd Schwarz and the state attorney general’s office.
Schock and two other city officials last year accused Schwarz of acting unprofessionally while prosecuting white supremacist Craig Cobb, who tried unsuccessfully to take over Leith. A committee of the state attorney disciplinary board rejected the complaint.
The charge against Schock stems from city efforts to clean up dilapidated buildings after Cobb left.
Schwarz says he and the sheriff asked the attorney general’s office to handle the probe into Schock’s actions “to avoid any appearance of impropriety.”
The attorney general’s office declined comment, citing the ongoing case.
Schock says he’ll fight the charge.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A group that provides grants to developers of North Dakota farm products will consider funding seven projects at its quarterly meeting.
The Agricultural Products Utilization Commission meets Feb. 19 in Bismarck to review funding requests that total more than $418,000.
The largest request is $150,000 from Wahpeton-based Giant Snacks Inc., which wants to expand marketing into California, Texas and Mexico. Another large request is from Abbiamo Pasta Co. in Casselton – about $77,000 to find an alternative to eggs in pasta.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Some Alabama judges are following an order from the state’s chief justice, Roy Moore, who has told them not to give marriage licenses to same-sex couples. They’re doing so even though the U.S. Supreme Court today refused to block the marriages. In those areas where probate judges are listening to the Supreme Court — and not to Moore — Alabama is now the 37th state where gays and lesbians can legally wed.
BOSTON (AP) – Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker calls the performance of Boston’s public transit system during the latest severe winter weather “unacceptable.” He says he’s disappointed and frustrated that the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority hadn’t been able to maintain even limited service on some rapid transit lines as the latest storm pounds the Boston area. Monday morning, nearly 50 commuters were evacuated from a disabled Red Line train in Quincy after being stranded for more than two hours.
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama says he has “very real differences” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH’-hoo) over Iran and the need for more sanctions. He’s also defending his decision not to meet with Netanyahu during his upcoming Washington visit, which comes shortly before Israel’s elections. Obama spoke at a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN’-geh-lah MEHR’-kuhl). He says as much as he loves Merkel, if she were two weeks out from an election, she wouldn’t have received a White House invitation either.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Sheriff’s investigators are contacting Bruce Jenner and other drivers involved in a fatal chain-reaction crash to ask for access to their cellphone records. They’re trying to determine if distracted driving played a role in the four-vehicle crash over the weekend on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Investigators say this type of request is routine in major wrecks. A publicist for the Olympic gold medalist says Jenner wasn’t texting while driving and will provide his phone records if asked.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – A judge says former rap mogul Suge (shug) Knight should stay behind bars until his next court hearing in March related to a deadly hit-and-run. A prosecutor and Knight’s attorney asked for a delay in a bail-review hearing Monday, with both sides stating they needed more time to prepare. Knight has been charged with murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run after authorities say he ran down and killed one man and seriously injured another in a parking lot.
