BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Nearly a dozen major cities in the Dakotas set record-high temperatures for the date on Sunday.

National Weather Service reports show that record highs were set in the North Dakota cities of  Jamestown, at 72 degrees, breaking an 88 year old record of 64 degrees set in 1927.

Grand Forks, Fargo,  Dickinson and Bismarck. In South Dakota, Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, Watertown and Pierre all set records.

Temperatures on Sunday reached into the 60s, 70s and 80s in the two states. Rapid City was the hottest, at 84 degrees. The broke not only the city record for March 15 but also the all-time March record of 83 set on March 20, 2007, and March 31, 2012.

Some of the records broken on Sunday dated to the 1920s and 1930s.

Jamestown (CSi) Under a mostly clear sky and a warm 68 degrees, the 37th annual nual Runnin O’ the Green in 2015, Saturday had 2,100 participants

Larry Knoblich says the number is down a bit from the 2,300 particpants in 2012, another warm weather day,  adding that this year enough donations were raised to make a contribution to the Elks, Camp Grassick. and help 15 to 20 cancer patients.

The final numbers are being tallied.

Besides the participants other donations came from non-participants, and other included the Individuals Motorcycle Club givning Knoblich a $1,500 check. Bartenders at one of the bars gave him $250 from their tip jar. Knoblich said the Corner Bar, Wonder Bar Sports Bar and the Knights of Columbus pooled their donations together and gave Knoblich a check for $8,000.

Jamestown Police reported a pedestrian-car accident around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, at the intersection of 1st Avenue South and 2nd Street Southwest The report says two pedestrians were crossing 1st Avenue South against the signal light.

A 57-year-old Jamestown woman, was transported by Jamestown Area Ambulance to the Jamestown Regional Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

 

Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown City Administrator Jeff Fuchs the city has verified 1,287 signatures on a petition seeking a one percent city sales tax to pay for construction of the first phase of the proposed Two Rivers Activity Center. The petition had 1,705 signatures. 1,053 certified signatures were needed to place the question on the ballot.

The City Council has 90 days from this past Thursday to schedule the special election, which will be run by Stutsman County.

The final decision for the election date will be determined by the City Council.

Jamestown Parks and Recreation Foundation is in the process of raising money to pay for the election. Parks and Recreation Department Director Doug Hogan says, the election will cost about $10,000.

City voters will be asked to approve a 1 percent city sales tax that would be in place until the debt associated with the Two Rivers Activity Center is retired or until June 30, 2035, whichever comes first. The vote would only need a simple majority to pass.

Jamestown (CSi)  The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a one vehicle rollover on Stutsman County road 68, 12 mile north of Medina, just after 5-pm Saturday, injured two Lincoln, North Dakota people.

The Ford pickup operated by 35 year old Trent Guthmiller, was northbound on the paved county road when the right tires drifted off the east edge of the roadway. Guthmiller steered left, then right attempting to maintain control. The vehicle slid across both lanes, entered the east ditch and overturned.

Guthmiller was injured and transported by ambulance to Jamestown Regional Medical Center. The passenger, 33 year old  Mindy Guthmiller was ejected and seriously injured. She was flown to Bismarck.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Highway Patrol was assisted by Medina Fire and Rescue, an the Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office.

Valley City (CSi) Officials with the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services informed Emergency Managers downstream that there is a ’hole” in the Tolna Dam southeast of Tolna, which holds approximately 2,000 acre feet of water.

State’s Attorney Jamie Tenneson says a hole has developed in the dam. He says the dam holds a relatively small amount of water and people living in about 10 to 12 farms downstream have been notified.

On Friday he North Dakota Department of Transportation and the North Dakota Highway Patrol  temporarily closed ND Highway 15 from the junction of ND Highway 20 to ND Highway 1.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineer spokesman Rich Schueneman told Barnes County Emergency Manager Kim Franklin on Friday that with the dry spring there is more than 3 feet of storage available on Lake Ashtabula right now.

Franklin says, the amount of water is equal to less than .25 of a foot of pool level at Lake Ashtabula.

Schueneman points out that there is enough time to let the water go through the system and there should be no significant affects to any of the communities downstream of Bald Hill Dam or residences living close to the Sheyenne River.

Bald Hill Dam pool level on Friday, March 13, 2015 was at 1262.5 which provides 3 feet of storage.

Outflows from the dam are minimal as they are below 2,000 cfs as the upstream and downstream runoff is low due to this last winter’s below average snow fall.

Engineers with the State Water Commission and Nelson County Highway Department are keeping an eye on a breach

Franklin says we are keeping in constant contact with state officials and will provide public updates when needed concerning this situation.

State Water Commission news Release,Friday Evening:

A five-foot hole has developed in the Tolna Dam spillway with water flowing through. The State Water Commission and local Emergency Managers from the Nelson County Water Resource District are closely monitoring the site.

“Public safety is our number one priority and at this time a breech has not occurred,” stated Bruce Engelhardt, Water Development Division Director at the State Water Commission. “If the dam should breech, the possible impacts along the Sheyenne River would be minor,” noted Engelhardt. “The reservoir behind the dam contains about 2,000 acre feet of water, while there is 16,000 acre feet of storage in Lake Astabula, so there is no risk to Baldhill Dam.”

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) and the North Dakota Highway Patrol had temporarily closed ND Highway 15 from the junction of ND Highway 20 to ND Highway 1, and has since reopened.

No evacuations or sheltering is necessary or anticipated at this time. The State Water Commission along with the North Dakota Department of Transportation and the Department of Emergency Services are working together to monitor all efforts and will continue to keep the public informed.

 

Jamestown (CSi) The James River Humane Society, will hold its annual fundraiser, Poker Tournament on Saturday March 21, 2015.

On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, President, Matt Opsahl said the event will be held at the Quality Inn & Suites in Jamestown, with registration at noon with play beginning at 1-pm.

Upcoming fundraisers – selling cook books and calendar, featuring animals that have been adopted from the shelter, and possible golf tournament this coming summer.

With the calendar those who have adopted an animal from the James River Humane Society will be contacted, to have their pet on the calendar.

Opsahl said the costs range from $25, $50 and $100 depending on the sizing of the photo on the calendar.

Jamestown (CSi) The Frontier Village Association has listed the board-approved events during White Cloud Days, a four-day event July 9, 10, 11 & 12, with activities marking the birthday of the albino buffalo.

White Cloud Days is organized by the National Buffalo Museum, Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce and Jamestown Tourism.

Activities include a concert, plus grilled buffalo burgers for sale, and a prairie-themed church service hosted by the Frontier Village.

Old Friends will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. on July 9, 2015 at the amphitheater.

Line dancing will be taught from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 10 at the Frontier Village.

Grilled buffalo burgers will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 11 at the general store, and at 3 p.m. the Wild West Players will perform a Wild West shootout on Main Street in the village.

Prairie Ministry Services church service is July 12, at 9:30 a.m. at the Pioneer Church.

On a recent Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Becky Thatcher-Keller, said, the biggest change for this year’s event, outside of moving the date away from the Stutsman County Fair, is the route of the White Cloud Birthday Parade, on Saturday Jul 11.

BNSF no longer allow a parade to cross the tracks, as so the parade will start and end at McElroy Park.

Thatcher-Keller said the return route has not yet been decided. She said the The start time might also change from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Washington (CSi) Senator John Hoeven Friday announced that the Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded $122,000 to the South Central Dakota Regional Council, in Jamestown, and the Tri-County Regional Development Council to support the development and implementation of a comprehensive economic development strategy (CEDS) for these regions.

Hoeven said, “In recent years, North Dakota has been the fastest growing state in the country in terms of both population and our economy. These EDA grants will bring North Dakota’s public and private sectors together in creating an economic development plan to diversify and strengthen the regional economy.”

The grants are awarded as follows:

· $61,000 for the South Central Dakota Regional Council, which serves Barnes, Dickey, Foster, Griggs, LaMoure, Logan, McIntosh, Stutsman and Wells counties.

· $61,000 for the Tri-County Regional Development Council, which is comprised of Divide, McKenzie and Williams counties.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Grand Forks police are investigating a reported armed robbery of a convenience store.

Authorities say the clerk at a Cenex Gas Station reported that a male with a handgun and two other males entered the store shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday and demanded cash.

Police say the suspects fled on foot with an undetermined amount of cash.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A commercial airliner bound for Chicago from Anchorage, Alaska, made an unscheduled landing at Fargo’s Hector International Airport early Monday after a passenger suffered a medical emergency.

Paramedics met the plane when it landed and took a woman from the plane to a hospital.

Information on the nature of the woman’s medical emergency was not immediately available.

The plane departed a short time later and continued on to Chicago.

 

ANAMOOSE, N.D. (AP) – Authorities say an Anamoose man died in a roll over crash on a highway in central North Dakota. The North Dakota State Highway Patrol says the man drifted into a ditch yesterday morning while driving along Highway 52 near Anamoose. The Highway Patrol says the man over-corrected, his vehicle rolled and he was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Residents of communities in Divide and Burke counties have been told to boil tap water or use bottled water after a break in a Western Area Water Supply Authority pipeline.

The state Health Department issued the boil order Sunday. It’s in effect until further notice for communities including Crosby, Fortuna, Noonan and Columbus.

The water system brings Missouri River water to northwestern North Dakota. Executive Director Jaret Wirtz says a pipeline underneath a wetland failed and will need to be replaced. Divide County Emergency Manager Jody Gunlock says the break happened Saturday about 3 miles south of Crosby.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Legislature is slated to consider one of the most contentious bills of the session on Monday.

The so-called “ham-and-cheese” bill would exempt dairy and swine operations from the state’s eight decades-old anti-corporate farming law.

The measure already has been approved by the Senate. But the House delayed action on the bill last week because of a technical problem with wording in the bill that defines an animal feeding operation.

Supporters of the bill say it will help save dying dairy and declining swine industries in the state. Opponents say the current law blocks unfair competition from big, out-of-state corporations.

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A Grand Forks man awaiting trial for his role in two drug overdose deaths has been arrested on an alleged violation of his release.

Joshua Fulp is charged in federal court with conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute controlled substances resulting in serious bodily injury and death. He has pleaded not guilty.

The 20-year-old Fulp was ordered to undergo counseling at a Fargo halfway house as a condition for his pretrial release. Authorities say he was kicked out of the program because he missed seven sessions and was late for one other meeting.

Fulp’s attorney could not be reached for comment.

Court documents say the deaths involved the use of the synthetic drug powered fentanyl. Trial for Fulp and two other defendants is scheduled April 28 in Fargo.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says the Tioga Township Board of Supervisors violated the state’s open meetings law by failing to advertise one of its meetings.

Stenehjem received a complaint that the board failed to let people know about a meeting on Nov. 20, 2014. The attorney general says he doesn’t believe the board was attempting to keep the meeting a secret, but it still required some sort of public notice.

Stenehjem ordered the board to provide minutes from the meeting free of charge and suggested that its members review its responsibilities under state law.

 

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota officials will learn more this week about the health, economic and environmental effects of pipelines carrying crude oil from North Dakota and Canada through Minnesota.

A recent report prepared by several state agencies shows about 3.3 million barrels of crude oil cross Minnesota every day. About 80 percent of that oil is being transported by pipeline. The rest moves by train.

The Minnesota Legislature enacted new rail safety laws to respond to potential spills, but a new state report says such measures should be extended to pipelines to both prevent spills and respond to any that do happen.

Minnesota Public Radio News reports Minnesota saw 80 oil spills over 10,000 gallons from 1960 to 2012.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A multi-university research team is studying temporary trailer parks occupied by thousands of people across North Dakota’s oil patch. The Bismarck Tribune reports the team has been visiting “man camps” throughout the past three years in an effort to preserve their history. The researchers have been photographing and speaking with residents at about 50 to 60 camps in the region.
WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – A Wahpeton couple whose 4-year-old son recently died is trying to help other families staying with loved ones in the hospital.

Stuart and Melissa Schumacher say  their grief was intensified by how much their bodies ached after sleeping on uncomfortable couches while their son, Evan, was in critical condition at a Fargo hospital.

To help other families in similar situations, the couple has launched a charity, Evan’s Support, to provide better furniture at hospitals.

The Schumachers are seeking to establish a national network of writers and editors that helps families with obituaries for their children. The charity also will cover the cost of submitting obituaries to news publications.

Online fundraising efforts have been set up to collect money for the charity’s efforts.

 

In sports…

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fans of the North Dakota State University men’s basketball team are getting a chance to buy tickets for the team’s upcoming game in the NCAA Tournament.

NDSU says fans can enter ticket purchase requests at www.gobison.com/tickets until 4 p.m. Monday. Priority is given to members of the Team Makers club, men’s basketball season ticket holders and NDSU alumni.

NDSU is making its third NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. The Bison are the No. 15 seed in the South Region and play No. 2 Gonzaga in Seattle on Friday. If the Bison win they will play either Iowa or Davidson in the next round, also in Seattle.

Concordia University NE 76  UJ 59.

The Jimmies led Concordia 32-31 at halftime, but,  Jimmies were held to 27 second-half points in the  76-59 loss to the number 3-ranked 34-2 Concordia   Bulldogs.

Concordia advances to the Final Four on Monday night at 8 p.m. against Briar Cliff, Iowa. The Chargers (26-9) beat Tabor, Kan., in the opening quarterfinal on Saturday 62-53.

 

Minot   (CSi)  The Jamestown High School Blue Jays boy’s basketball team’s season ended Saturday at the Fargodome with a 62-60 loss to West Fargo, in the fifth place game at the State Class A Tournament.

The Blue Jays led for most of the second half, but ran into foul trouble late.

Noah Wanzek led Jamestown in the loss with another double-double, adding 25 points and 13 boards, with  an average of nearly 20 points and 12 rebounds in three games at state.

It was the first trip to state for the boys program since 2001, when it also took sixth place.
