Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown officials received calls stemming from the weekend storm that dropped more than 5 inches of rain and snow on Jamestown.
The large amount of rain inundated the recently cleaned storm sewer system and caused sewage backups into a number of homes in southeast Jamestown.
Utilities Operations Manager, Steve Suko, says reports included, a water and sewage mix up to nearly 16 inches deep.
One report was from a home the corner of 3rd Avenue and 8th Street Southeast, the second event for the home in the past seven years.
Suko estimated he had received about 20 calls by Monday afternoon.
He added that the problem related to the recent storm drain cleanout in that the sanitary sewer is below the storm sewer. When the storm sewer was cleaned, it allowed water into the sanitary system.
The city of Jamestown awarded a $191,000 contract to Scherbenske Inc. in January to clean about 6,000 feet of storm sewer.
The volume of water damaged the temporary fixes.
The city plans for repairs in those areas and advertise for bids to repair the problem, relating to the age and design of the storm and sanitary sewer.
City crews should be able to go into the storm sewer and make repairs on Tuesday.
The Jamestown City Council’s Public Works Commiitte on Thursday this week will be given updates on storm sewer cleaning and possible repairs.
Damage also occurred to 4th Street Northeast near the University of Jamestown football stadium. Water there washed out part of the street on Sunday.
Roads south of Spiritwood Lake and south of Spiritwood were reported flooded, although damage to the roads was not anticipated.
Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Public School Board Monday decided to look at sharing the cost for paving 19th Avenue Northeast next month in conjunction with a developer planning to build a 456-unit apartment complex east of Jamestown High School.
The board heard a report from Superintendent Robert Lech about a phone conference he held with a developer and Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation (JSDC), CEO Connie Ova and JSDC Board member Robert Toso about the developer’s plan to build a 456-unit apartment complex on property east of Jamestown High School.
Lech says the developer, plans to work with the city of Jamestown to pave 19th Avenue Northeast, currently undeveloped and runs along the section line between the JHS property and property where the developer plans to build.
The developer will do a cost analysis on the paving and sharing that information with him in the beginning of June.
Lech said if the numbers work, the board should consider working with the developer as the high school needs a second outlet road to ease traffic congestion during peak-use periods.
In other business, the board approved a 11 percent increase in the annual fee for the Artist in Residence program agreement with the Arts Center.
JPS will pay the Arts Center $22,500 for the 2015-16 school year, up from $20,000 the district paid for the current school year. Lech said part of the increase is for providing services to the middle and high schools.
The meeting was recorded by CSi with replays starting Tuesday on CSi Cable 10.

Jamestown (CSi) On virtually every street sign and billboard in the Jamestown community is the Newman stamp. Newman signs was founded in 1956. Shortly thereafter Harold Newman was instrumental in the building of The World’s Largest Buffalo at the Frontier Fort giving the city the title “The Buffalo City”. Today Newman Signs, Inc. is one of the 10 largest sign manufacturers in the nation and one of the largest employers in the city of Jamestown. Harold Newman has left his mark on the Jamestown community in an unrivaled way. The next Newman stamp is the largest one-time donation ever to have been gifted to the University of Jamestown.
The gift has been given in honor of the late Harold Newman and his wife, Mary, to further the mission of the University of Jamestown. A portion of the gift will be used to fund nursing scholarships and the rest will be used to fund the building of the new athletic arena.
Harold and the Newman family have been supporters of the University of Jamestown for the last 4 decades. From the 1970’s up to his passing in February, 2014, Harold was a Jimmie booster club supporter and could often be found at basketball games.
Lawrie Paulson, Athletic Director at the University of Jamestown, expresses much pleasure at this gift. “The projects to upgrade and add to the existing athletic and recreation facilities will have an immediate, positive impact on hundreds of current students, and thousands of future students, by providing modern space for practices, competitions, and recreational activities. A very large percentage of our students participate in athletic and intramural activities, and providing them with outstanding facilities is a major factor in enhancing the student experience. This generous gift from the Newman family is a critical step in creating the impetus to make this happen.”
In a letter dated December 4th, 2009, Harold wrote to University of Jamestown President Robert Badal, “Jamestown College is a shining example of Jamestown’s best. Your campus is beautiful, your staff dedicated, and your students fine examples of what today’s youth have to offer. As a resident of Jamestown I am proud of the work you do educating young people in preparation for lives spent in service to family and community.”
University of Jamestown and the Newman family are icons in the Jamestown community with a shared goal of creating a brighter future. University of Jamestown President Robert Badal expresses gratitude on behalf of himself and the University, “We are grateful to Harold, Mary and the Newman family for their enduring support over many years. It means a great deal to the University of Jamestown to have the Newman name on an important new arena that will benefit our students and programs while enhancing community involvement on our campus.”
The exact amount of the donation from the Newman family was not disclosed. UJ President Robert Badal, said the donation is the “largest one-time gift in UJ history.”
The proposed $16 million building, to include the Newman name in its title, will hold an arena that can seat 2,200 people, have training facilities for the university’s student-athletes and students and meeting space that will be open for community use. The new building will be located east of the Larson Center.
The University of Jamestown was established in 1883 and is ranked as a top tier regional school in US News and World Report and a top Midwestern school in The Princeton Review. The school features development of the whole person through its distinctive Journey to Success experience.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The president of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association says a World Trade Organization ruling on meat labeling could lead to “crippling tariffs” that will hurt ranchers.
The WTO ruled against U.S. labels on packaged steaks and other cuts of meat that say where the animals were born, raised and slaughtered. The WTO said the “country of origin” labels put Canadian and Mexican livestock at a disadvantage.
The ruling is considered a victory for the U.S. meat industry, which says the labels are burdensome.
North Dakota Stockmen’s President Steve Brooks says the ruling “opens the door for retaliation” that will hurt cattle producers and the broader U.S. economy.
Brooks says the Stockmen’s supports labeling, but not through a “faulty, government-mandated approach.” He says Congress must act quickly to repeal the law.

Vann is listed as one of the state’s witnesses intended to be called in another human trafficking case involving Las Vegas man. That trial is scheduled to start on Sept. 1.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Golf courses in the Minot area are continuing to recover after being inundated during the 2011 Souris River flood.
The Park Board is considering buying 240 acres of land for $3 million for a new public course.
Parks Director Ron Merritt says the existing Souris Valley Golf Course is in a low area along the river that’s at high risk of flooding. It also would not be protected by a city flood protection project being developed in response to the 2011 flood.
The Minot Country Club is prepping to open a new course after more than two years of work, but it is not a public course. And Merritt says population growth in the city has increased the demand for tee times.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – The St. Paul Saints have opened their new $67 million ballpark with an exhibition game.
