FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A propane tank fire in Fargo prompted the partial evacuation of a high-rise apartment building.

Officials say a 1,000-gallon outdoor propane tank caught fire Sunday afternoon and was burning near two other tanks of the same size. Firefighters who responded had the blaze out in about 10 minutes.

Five floors of the 10-story building had been evacuated by then. There was no damage to the building, and residents were allowed to return.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined. No injuries were reported.

GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have recovered the body of a woman from a car that plunged into a river in northeastern North Dakota.

Grafton police got a report of a missing person just after 4:30 p.m. Saturday. That led authorities to the bank of Park River.

The Grand Forks County sheriff’s department dive team was called in along with other agencies. The vehicle was retrieved around 11 p.m., and the woman’s body was found inside.

Police identify the woman as 51-year-old Carolina Mendoza of Grafton.

An autopsy is planned. Police continue to investigate.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Formal charges are pending against a New Town woman and her Minot boyfriend after they allegedly left a 9-year-old child alone overnight in a camper.

Minot police say the couple were arrested Sunday morning after officers who responded to a report of a possible crime determined they were both drunk and had left the child alone all night in a camper at a recreational vehicle park in the city.

The man and woman were taken into custody for alleged child neglect. The child was put into protective custody with Ward County Social Services.

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Authorities in West Fargo say head trauma is the likely cause of death for a six-month-old baby boy who was airlifted to Minneapolis this week after being found unresponsive at a home daycare.

Owen Skodje of Fargo died at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis after he was on life support.

Detective Tim Runcorn says authorities don’t yet know the circumstances surrounding the boy’s injuries.

The home daycare where the boy was found is run by Darcy Anderson, who doesn’t care for enough children to be licensed.

Police were called to Anderson’s West Fargo daycare on Monday after receiving a report of a baby who wasn’t breathing. The daycare provider was performing CPR on the infant when officers arrived. Runcorn says police and Cass County Social Services are investigating.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A six-member committee is meeting Bismarck to try to negotiate a compromise on an unresolved measure in this year’s Legislature that affects public employee benefits.

The committee hearing is Monday at the state Capitol. If an agreement is reached, the Legislature could reconvene June 16.

The session ended in April two days short of the maximum permitted under the state constitution. But House and Senate were still at odds over a provision in legislation aimed at ensuring that thousands of public employees, including lawmakers, can keep the same health benefits and medical providers when their insurer changes July 1.

Senate leaders likened House amendments to the bill as micromanaging and say they could jeopardize the new contract with Sanford Health and spur legal action.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota man says he will plead guilty to an assault that injured a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer.

A plea agreement calls for Brandon Belgarde, of Rugby, to plead guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon, and assaulting and resisting a federal officer. In exchange for the deal, a third charge of damage to government property would be dropped.

Authorities say the November 2014 incident involved a motor vehicle. No further details have been released.

Belgarde faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison on the two counts.

A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota has received a $750,000 grant for a multi-purpose research station in support of NASA*s future missions.

The funds will help the school conduct research and development in areas that are applicable to NASA’s work in Earth science, aeronautics and human and robot deep space exploration.

North Dakota’s congressional delegation says the federal funds are being made available through NASA’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. The federal funds will be given over a three-year period.

U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer says NASA’s support of research station at UND “is another example of North Dakota’s growing importance in developing cutting edge aerospace technologies.”

The aerospace industry in North Dakota has been rapidly growing, particularly after Grand Forks was given federal authorization for drone testing.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Two of the biggest groups representing farmers in North Dakota are split over recent legislation aimed at preventing spills and other problems related to the 20,000 miles of pipelines in the state.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple signed legislation in April that sets aside $400,000 for the program that would hire ombudsmen to work with landowners to resolve pipeline issues.

North Dakota Farm Bureau public policy director Pete Hanebutt says  the program grows government and duplicates services already in place.

North Dakota Farmers Union member advocacy director Kayla Pulvermacher says her group favors the program. Pulvermacher says pipeline reclamation issues have been of widespread concern among its membership.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – An oil production company owned by MDU Resources Group Inc. is up for sale again.

MDU had taken Fidelity Exploration and Production Co. off the market when crude oil prices dropped at the end of last year, with the intention of selling it when higher prices returned.

CEO Dave Goodin says in a statement that the company concluded “the timing was appropriate to move forward.”

MDU plans to use the money from the sale to pay for investments at its other subsidiaries.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) – Devils Lake officials are now trying to recruit private investors to be able to build a convention center after attempts to publicly finance the facility have failed.

Officials plan to put out a request seeking proposals in the upcoming days.

The city has been trying for well over a year to build a convention center at a former Wal-Mart site.

Fifty-five percent of voters in October rejected a sales tax increase that would have funded the convention center and a wellness facility at Lake Region State College.

Officials had estimated the price of both facilities at $23.5 million.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A Minot construction company is suing the developer and contractor of the downtown parking ramps for more than $500,000.

Keller Paving & Landscaping has filed a breach of contract complaint for its work done on the ramp in the last year.

A spokesman for one of the developers says the defendants dispute the amount of money owed and are seeking mediation. He says the two sides are about $100,000 apart.

Keller Paving also is asking for interest, attorney fees and court costs.

LANGDON, N.D. (AP) – A North Dakota elementary school student now counts a prime minister as his pen pal.

Langdon third-grader Edward Freer addressed a letter to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott as part of a class assignment and recently heard back from him.

Edward’s classmates also sent letters to heads of nations, but his was different. Edward wrote his letter entirely in braille because he is nearly blind.

Edward says he asked Abbott if people in Australia have kangaroos as pets. Abbott in a video message told Edward that’s not the case because very few people “have a backyard big enough to keep kangaroos.”

Abbott also thanked Edward for being interested in the country he leads.

Edward’s mom, Carey, says this shows students can excel in school despite a disability.

In world and national news….

ELMAU, Germany (AP) – The White House says President Barack Obama and French President Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH’ oh-LAWND’) agree that economic sanctions against Russia need to continue until Moscow fully implements terms of a peace accord with Ukraine. The two leaders met today on the sidelines of the G7 summit. They also agree on keeping Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

WASHINGTON (AP) – After years of delay, the U.S. will now be able to formally endorse two nuclear treaties dealing with terrorists exploding bombs containing nuclear material. The authorization is contained in a little-noticed section of the surveillance bill that ends the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of Americans’ telephone records. It took seven years to pass legislation needed to bring U.S. law in line with the treaties ratified in 2008.

VIENNA (AP) – The European Union says getting to the bottom of allegations that Iran worked on developing nuclear weapons is essential to any nuclear deal. Iran denies any interest in nuclear arms. The EU statement comes ahead of a June 30 target date for a deal. It was obtained by The Associated Press ahead of a meeting today of the U.N’s International Atomic Energy Agency.

DANNEMORA, N.Y.      BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – The owner of an unlicensed day care in Louisiana has been arrested along with an employee after a 22-month-old girl was left in a hot vehicle for about two hours and died. Authorities say Wright and Newman used a day care van to take 16 children to get lunch and forgot to get the girl out of the vehicle.
