Fire fighters extracted smoke from the building, and bank officials will have a repair company locate and repair the issue.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – Police in Minot are investigating a woman’s report that she scared off an intruder by firing a gun in her home.

The woman told officers who responded to her home about 1:30 a.m. Sunday that she had fled from a male who then followed her into her residence. She said she got the gun and fired it once, scaring away the intruder.

Police searched the area but found no one.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Bail has been set at $1 million for an Iowa man accused of robbing a downtown Fargo motel and shooting at police.

A court appearance was held Monday at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo where Eric Webb, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa is recovering from injuries suffered in a shootout with police. Webb is charged with robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police say Webb demanded money and fired a shot into the front desk of the Howard Johnson motel during the Thursday afternoon robbery. Webb fled on foot before he was spotted by officers a few blocks away.

Police say one officer fired twice at Webb, whose condition has not been released. No other people were hurt in the incident.

Samuel Taylor is charged with felony gross sexual imposition and corruption of a minor. Authorities say the victims were ages 16 and 13.

The  allegations against Taylor date back to 2013.

Taylor’s attorney could not be immediately reached for comment.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A half-dozen bakers from Africa are in the Dakotas and Minnesota learning how to bake with soy flour.

The group spent several days at the Northern Crops Institute on the campus of North Dakota State University experimenting with soy in breads, croissants, scones, buns, cookies and doughnuts.

Experts at the Fargo institute say that while soy flour is important in the fight against malnutrition because it has more protein and is cheaper to use, the challenge is finding the right combination so the food tastes good.

The group that includes a couple of marketing experts is in Minnesota this week looking at ways to sell the products.

The trip was co-sponsored by the soybean associations in the Dakotas and Minnesota, along with an international group that promotes soy products.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Sen. Kelly Armstrong of Dickinson is the new chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party.

Armstrong was unanimously elected at a state committee meeting Saturday in Bismarck. Armstrong replaces Robert Harms, who did not seek re-election.

Armstrong is an attorney and vice president of Armstrong Corp. He was elected to the Senate in 2012.

Armstrong will serve a two-year term as the GOP party chairman, a position that promotes Republican policies and candidates in the state.

Update…

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A six-member committee is meeting in Bismarck to try to negotiate a compromise on an unresolved measure in this year’s Legislature that affects public employee benefits.

If an agreement is reached Monday, the Legislature could reconvene June 16.

The session ended in April two days short of the maximum permitted under the state constitution. But the House and Senate were still at odds over policy changes in a budget bill that House budget writers inserted to ensure that thousands of public employees, including lawmakers, can keep the same health benefits and medical providers when their insurer changes July 1.

Senate leaders likened the House version of the bill to micromanaging and say it could jeopardize the new contract with Sanford Health and spur legal action.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The female otter at Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot has died.

The otter named Cinnamon arrived at the zoo from a zoo in Massachusetts on May 6 and was placed in quarantine to be evaluated for disease and to be given time to adjust to new surroundings.

The animal became ill on May 30 and died. Officials are investigating the cause.

In world and national news…

ELMAU, Germany (AP) – It’s been nearly a year since American troops started returning to Iraq to help forces there deal with the Islamic State group. And President Barack Obama says the militants are still “nimble, aggressive and opportunistic.” Obama told reporters Monday in Germany — where he met with Iraq’s prime minister — that there’s been “significant progress” in areas where the U.S. has trained Iraqis to fight. But he said Iraqi troops who haven’t had U.S. assistance are often ill-equipped, and suffer from poor morale.

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (AP) – The family of one of the Iraq war’s most celebrated Marine heroes has accepted the nation’s second-highest award for valor — seven years after the Pentagon denied him the Medal of Honor. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus (MAY’-buhs) Monday posthumously bestowed the Navy Cross on Sgt. Rafael Peralta for falling on a grenade during the battle for Fallujah (fuh-LOO’-juh) in November 2004. His mother accepted the medal at California’s Camp Pendleton. The Pentagon had denied the Medal of Honor after questions were raised about whether Peralta was even conscious when he fell on the grenade, shielding other troops from the explosion.

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) – There are differing accounts of the incident near Dallas after police responded to a report of a disturbance Friday night involving a group of black youths at a neighborhood pool party. Some witnesses told the Dallas Morning News that police singled out black kids and confronted them. But a local radio personality who is black says the actions of an officer who pulled a black girl to the ground were not about race. Benet Embry, who lives in the neighborhood, says the situation at the party was getting out of hand, and the police were right to respond.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – Authorities say 61 people were arrested and 10 New Jersey state troopers were injured during a clash outside a major hip-hop concert in New Jersey last night. State police say the arrests came after people tried to climb fences and push past security to get into the sold-out show at MetLife Stadium. Some in the crowd also threw bottles at police. Officials say the troopers’ injuries were minor. Police used tear gas, pepper spray and noise generators to disperse the rowdy crowds outside the concert.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A Philadelphia street performer who gained national attention for his performance on “The Voice” has died. Anthony Riley was 28. The medical examiner’s office in Philadelphia says he took his own life. The contestant on the eighth season of NBC’s “The Voice” wowed the judges and became a fan favorite after belting out James Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good).” He left the show in January to deal with substance abuse issues and to enter rehab.
