VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a Minnesota woman has died from injuries suffered in a vehicle crash last month near Valley City.

73-year-old Sylvia Moen of Crookston died Saturday.

The patrol says the crash happed on May 31 after the driver of the vehicle fell asleep and drove into a median on Interstate 94. Moen was a passenger.

Troopers say all four occupants had to be extricated from the wreck.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Supreme Court has upheld the conviction of a Minot woman charged with attempted murder in the stabbing of her estranged husband.

Heather Leavitt is serving a 15-year prison term for stabbing Timothy Leavitt eight times in the Feb. 1, 2014 attack. She argued that evidence in the case should have been thrown out because there wasn’t probable cause to issue a warrant.

Timothy Leavitt could not identify his attacker, but told police the assailant had a pony-tail and the same stature as his wife. He also described the knife as being identical to a set he and his wife owned.

Justices say that while the facts supporting the search were marginal, there was a “fair probability” that evidence would be found in the search.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The state Department of Mineral Resources says North Dakota’s crude oil production dropped slightly in April.

The agency says the state produced an average of 1.16 million barrels of oil daily in April, down about 22,000 barrels from the March daily average.

Data show North Dakota natural gas production increased slightly in April.

The agency says 1.54 million cubic feet of natural gas was produced daily in April. In March, the state produced an average of 1.51 million cubic feet daily.

April statistics are the latest available because oil production numbers typically lag at least two months.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A judge has rejected a request by prosecutors to delay the re-trial of a former North Dakota teacher of year accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student in 2009.

The first trial for West Fargo High School teacher Aaron Knodel ended abruptly in April following one juror’s medical emergency while they were deliberating. Judge Steven McCullough threw out three charges against Knodel but said he could be retried on the two remaining counts of felony corruption or solicitation of a minor.

Prosecutors say the June 23 trial date is an “unrealistic and unfair” time frame. McCullough says Knodel has a right to a speedy trial.

Liz Brocker, spokeswoman for the North Dakota attorney general’s office, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The proposed raises for North Dakota university presidents are scheduled to be reviewed by a committee from the State Board of Higher Education.

3 percent salary increases are being recommended for all of the state’s university and college presidents for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

North Dakota University System communications director Billie Jo Lorius says the recommended 3 percent raise “is the minimum spelled out in policy.”

The highest-paid president is Robert Kelley at the University of North Dakota. His current $360,773 salary would jump to $371,596.

The next highest-paid president is Dean Bresciani at North Dakota State University. His $344,241 salary would increase to $354,568.

The committee’s recommendations would be presented before the full higher ed board June 24.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) – It’s a significant defeat for President Barack Obama in Congress — and it was inflicted by his fellow Democrats. The House Friday derailed a trade bill backed by the White House — with Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and dozens of other Democrats voting against the president’s wishes. The vote came a few hours after Obama went to the Capital to appeal for Democrats to give him power to negotiate global trade deals that Congress could approve or reject but not change.

WASHINGTON (AP) – As many as 14 million current and former civilian U.S. government employees had their personal information exposed to hackers. That’s according to two people who’ve been briefed on the investigation. And it’s a far higher figure than the Obama administration initially disclosed. The officials say the compromised records date back to the 1980s.

BOSTON (AP) – A Rhode Island man charged with conspiring to help the Islamic State group by plotting with two others to kill U.S. citizens has made an initial court appearance in Boston. Nicholas Rovinski didn’t enter a plea. Prosecutors say Rovinski and David Wright of Massachusetts conspired with a Boston terror suspect. That man, Usaama Rahim, was killed last week by terror investigators who had him under 24-hour surveillance.

NEW YORK (AP) – U.S. regulators are confirming that an air bag made by Takata Corp. was involved in the April death of a woman in Louisiana , connecting the defective air bags to a seventh fatality. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration examined the car belonging to Kylan Langlinais, the police report from the accident, and other evidence. A chemical that inflates the air bags can explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal inflator and sending shrapnel into the passenger compartment.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – It used to be an early focus of every Republican presidential candidate. But now, the Iowa Republican straw poll is disappearing. It’s partly because the 2016 GOP hopefuls haven’t expressed much interest in it. Critics say it’s become an expensive sideshow — and many candidates are worried about the humiliation of a poor showing.
