His condition has not been released.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are investigating a homicide on the city’s north side.

Lt. Joel Vettel says officers were called to make a welfare check at an apartment complex about 3:15 p.m. Monday when they discovered the body of an adult male in one of the main-floor units. Vettel says the victim’s injuries are “consistent with some sort of violence.”

Vettel says it appears that the victim was killed by an acquaintance and there is no danger to the general public.

Police are looking for a black Dodge Ram pickup truck that they believe is connected to the case. The truck has North Dakota license plates that read KAT 096. Vettel would not say who owns or could be driving the truck.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A judge has dismissed the case against a former North Dakota teacher of the year accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student in 2009.

The trial for West Fargo High School English teacher Aaron Knodel ended abruptly in April following one juror’s medical emergency during deliberations. Judge Steven McCullough also said the woman failed to disclose during jury selection that she had been a victim of sexual abuse.

McCullough later dropped three of the five charges against Knodel and declared a mistrial on the remaining charges of felony corruption or solicitation of a minor.

State prosecutors filed the motion last week to drop the remaining two charges, after their request to delay the retrial was rejected by McCullough. The second trial was scheduled to start Tuesday.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – An Argusville man has pleaded guilty to sexual assault and attempted sexual assault in an attack on three North Dakota State University students in their off-campus apartment.

Authorities say Stanley Busche (bush) raped two students from China last December and attempted to assault a third student.

Busche also pleaded guilty Monday to terrorizing and burglary for taking underwear and money from a dresser in the apartment.

Prosecutor Cherie (chuh-REE’) Clark says police linked Busche to the attack even though investigators recovered only a small DNA sample.

Clark says she plans to recommend a sentence of 15 years in prison.

MOTT, N.D. (AP) – Former longtime state Rep. James Kerzman died in a tractor accident over the weekend on his farm near Mott.

His wife of nearly three decades, Jill, tells The Associated Press that Kerzman was working alone in a Quonset on Saturday. She says the family believes a tractor slipped into gear and ran over him.

Hettinger County Sheriff Sarah Warner tells the AP the incident is still under investigation.

Kerzman was a Democrat who served in the state House from 1991 through 2009. He was defeated in his re-election bid in 2010.

Former journalist Darrell Dorgan says Kerzman will be remembered for his “deep concern about agriculture and social issues.” Jill Kerzman says he also was a wonderful husband and father.

His funeral is 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Mott Armory.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Critics of the federally backed Common Core education standards have filed a lawsuit against North Dakota over its membership in a group that developed new standardized tests.

The Michigan-based conservative Christian advocacy group Thomas More Law Center filed the suit, which names as defendants State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler, the state and others.

The  plaintiffs contend North Dakota’s membership in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium violates part of the U.S. Constitution stating that “no state shall, without the consent of Congress … enter into any agreement or compact with another state.”

Common Core standards outline skills students need to be ready for college and careers. Many states, including North Dakota, offered new standardized tests this year that were developed by Smarter Balanced.

A Department of Public Instruction spokesman says the agency wont’ comment on the lawsuit.

In world and national news…

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – Pressure is increasing on South Carolina’s Republican leaders to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds. Gov. Nikki Haley has an announcement planned for Monday, but there’s no word on what it will be. In the past, she has favored leaving the flag where it is. The mayor of Charleston was among the political and religious leaders Monday calling for the flag to be removed in the aftermath of the deadly shooting attack at a black church. Joseph P. Riley says the flag has been “appropriated by hate groups.”

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – The Sons of Confederate Veterans says it plans to vigorously fight any effort to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of South Carolina’s Statehouse. The group says it was horrified at last week’s shooting of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, allegedly by a white man who was photographed several times holding the Confederate flag. But in a statement, the group says there is “absolutely no link” between the massacre and the banner. The group’s South Carolina commander says the organization is about heritage and history, not hate.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House says President Barack Obama doesn’t regret using the N-word to make a point about racial progress in an interview. A spokesman says the White House isn’t surprised that his use of the word would stir controversy. But spokesman Josh Earnest says Obama wasn’t trying to be provocative. He says Obama was speaking in a free-flowing, casual interview for a podcast and trying to make the point that ending racism is about more than manners. Obama said that just because people realize it’s not polite to use the racial slur in public doesn’t mean that racism is “cured.”

PEARLAND, Texas (AP) – Authorities say former Major League Baseball player Darryl Hamilton has been killed in a murder-suicide at a suburban Houston home. Police say Hamilton’s body was found at the home Sunday. He’d been shot several times. They say a woman in the home, identified as Monica Jordan, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police say a 14-month old child of Jordan and Hamilton was found unharmed at the home.  Hamilton was part of the New York Mets team that went to the World Series in 2000. He was currently working as an analyst for the MLB Network.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) – Lawyers for Bill Cosby have asked a federal judge to throw out a defamation lawsuit filed by three women who accuse the comedian of sexual assaults from decades ago. His lawyers said at a hearing today in Massachusetts that Cosby was merely acting in “self-defense” when his representatives responded to the allegations through statements to the media. They say some comments are protected speech while the statute of limitations has expired in others. Cosby wasn’t at the hearing, but one of his accusers, Tamara Green, was.
